U 1T 5T TENT HENRY P. ROBERTS, OF'VBOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF `'.LO
G-llORGlll M. PROCTOR, F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Bor'rnn CAP.
Application filed January 22, 1923. Serial No. 614,122.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY P. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Caps, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to bottles caps and has for its object the provision of means whereby a bottle may be hermetically sealed. The invention consists of a cap having inturned ears adapted to engage a flange on the neck of a bottle, combined with means for forcing said ears into gripping contact with said neck.
The invention further consists of a cap provided with a packing member and having a non-revoluble threaded stem extending through a bar having inturned arms for forcing said disk into gripping contact with a flange on the neck of abottle, said stem having an adjusting .nut by which the cap maybe forced against the end of the bottle.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be understood readily by reference tothe description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is shown in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that the invention is no-t limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described, except as required by the scope of the appended claims.
Of the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a front' elevation of the upper end ofa bottle and having applied thereto a bottle cap embodying the principles of the present invention.
Figure 2 represents a plan of the same.
Figure 3 represents a side elevation of the same.
Figure 4 represents a vertical section through the bottle closing disk, on line 4, 4 on Fig. 1.
Figure 5 represents a p-lan of the blank from which the disk sup-porting bar is formed.
Figure 6 represents an inverted plan of the bottle closing disk with the packing member removed, and
Figure 7 represents a vertical section of same on line 7, 7 onFig. 6. l
Similiar characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures 'of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is a bar havin downwardly extending armsll, the lower ends of which are inturned kas indicated at 12, these inturned ends 12 being adapted to extend below a iange 13 on the neck 14 of a bottle.
The bar 10has a cylindrical'opening 15 therein through which extends the-threaded stem 16 projecting upwardly from a cupshaped disk 17. This cup-shaped disk 17 has a cylindrical opening 18V centrally disposed therein, in which is positioned the threaded stem 16, the lower end of which is provided with a flat-sidedy head 19 positioned in a recess 20 formed in the under side of the cup-shaped disk 17 l Positioned within the cup-shaped disk 17 is a resilient packing member 21 which is adapted to rest upon the upper end of the neck 14 of the bottle.
The cup-shaped disk 17 is provided with oppositely disposed ears 22, the out-turned lower ends of which are positioned in o-penended slots 23 rformed in the inturned ends 12 of thek arms 11. By thus positioning the ears 22 in the slots 23, the bar 10 and the disk 17 are prevented from rotatingy relatively to each other.
The outer end of the threaded stem 16 'has an adjusting nut 24 mounted thereon, the under face of which bears against vthe upper face of the bar 10. When the disk 17 is positioned upon the end of the neck 14 of a bottle, with the ears 22 engaging the under portion ofthe liange 13, it is obvious that when the nut 24 is rotated clockwise about the axis of the stem 16, the bar 10 will be forced downwardly, thereby causing the ears 22 to be moved toward each other into gripping contact with the neck of the bottle. Further rotation of the nut 24 will cause the disk 17 to be forced against the sealingV the bottle.
All rotary movement of the bar 10 and disk 17 is prevented by the Vriction oi' the packing member 2l in engagement with theY upper end of the neck 14e of the bottle.
lhenrit is desired to remove the cap from the bottle, the nut 24 is rotated contraclockwise and this movement will cause the pressure of the arms 12 on the ears 22 to be removed. The disk 17 may then be removed from contact with the end of the bottle by snapping the ears 22 over the flange 13 on the bottle neck 14.
This makes a very simple device to be used on various forms of bottles to hermetically close the same until it is desired to secure access to the contents of the bottle. Itis believed that the operationY and many advantages of the invention will be understood readily without further description.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
1. A bottle cap consisting of a non-revoluble disk having oppositely disposed downwardly extending ears adapted to engage a l flange on the neck of a bottle; a bar having arms engaging the outer faces of said ears; and means for adjusting said bar toward said disk to cause said ears to move toward each other and grip said neck.
2. A bottle cap consisting of a bar having oppositely disposed arms; a non-revoluble disk provided with a stem extending through an opening in said bar and having downwardly extending ears adapted to be 'forced toward each other by said arms; and means for adjusting said bar toward and from said disk.
3. A bottle cap consisting of a nonrevoluble disk provided with a threaded stem and having downwardly extending ears adapted to engage atlange on the neck of a bottle; a bar provided with an opening through which said stem extends and having opposite-ly disposed inturned arms adapted to force said ears into gripping contact with said neck; and an adjusting nut on the projecting end of said stem.

A bottle cap consisting of a non-revoluble disk provided with a threaded stem and having downwardly extending ears adapted to engage a flange on the neck of a bottle; a bar having an opening to receive said stem and provided with arms adapted to force said ears into gripping contact vith said neck; means for preventing the rotation of said bar relatively to said disk; and an adjusting Ynut on the projecting end of said stem.
6. A bottle cap consisting of'a non-revoluble cup-shaped disk provided with a threaded stem and having downwardly extending ears adapted to engage a iange on the neck orn a bottle; a resilient packing member in said cup-shaped disk; a bar having an opening to receive said stem and provided Vwith arms adapted to force said ears into gripping contact with said neck; means for preventing the rotation of said bar relatively to said disk; and an adjusting nut on the projecting end of said stem.
7. A bottle cap consisting or a non-revoluble disk having a flat-sided central opening therein and provided with downwardly eX- tending ears adapted to engage a flange on the neck of a bottle; a headed member having a dat-sided portion positioned in said opening and provided with a threaded stem; a bar having an opening to receive said stem and provided with arms adapted to force said ears into gripping contact with said neck; and an adjusting nut on said threaded stem.
8. A bottle cap consisting of a non-revoluble disk having a flat-sided central opening therein and provided with downwardly extending ears adapted to engage a. flange on the neck of a bottle; a headed member having a .flat-sided portion positioned in said opening and provided with' a threaded stem; a bar having an opening to receive said stem and provided with arms adapted to torce said ears into gripping contact with said neck; an adjusting nut on the projecting end of said stem; and a packing member secured to the bottom of said disk.
