Application filed March 2, 1922. Serial No. 540,615.
a To alliwhom it may concern, t
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. Dnyrr'r, a citizen of the, United States, residing at l Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of- VNew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pivot Fastenings for Scale Levers, of which the followingis a specification. a I t I v I t This invention relates to scales and more particularly to that type of scales in which,
evers are employed having pivot pins forming parts of the pivotal connections between I the same and otherjmembers ofthescale.
In scales of this character as heretofore '15 constructed, the pivots have been secured to 1 the leversby casting the latter thereon, or Y thesa me 'jwere madeseparate and secured thereto by fasteningmeans which were" of c complicated, expensive and 'unreliable construction.
It is the object ofthisjinvention to providel means for fastening the pivot pins to the levers of a scale by means which are simple, durable, reliable and capableof being readily manipulated forexchanging the pivot pins when renewalof thesame 1 necessaryjdue to wear.
Inithe accompanying I ,is a fragmentary verticalilongitudlnalsection of a platform scale having its various vlevers rovided with pivot pinswhich are c'fastene thereto in accordancef with my invent-ion. Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken on line2- 2, Fig.1. Figure ,3 is a fra entarygside elevation, on an enlarged c scar e, of the center pivotal-connectionbetween" the long lever, and the short lever.
Figure 5' is a cross section taken on line 5&5,
'Fig. 3. Figures fiend} are vertical sections,,on an enlarged scale, taken on lines 6+6'and 7 -.7, Fig. I, respectively,Q 'Figures ivot 'pin and lever forming fparts'o one fiorm of myinvention. Figure 1141s a frag-1 inentary vertical'longitudinal section, show m ing a' 'modifiedf rm ef y'i vent -g w dawags; Figure "1 column or pillar 13 rising from one end of the base adjacent to, a corner thereof, a bifur- 0ittedSl1OI'tleVG1fl1 l: arranged lengthwise in the base and pivotally mounted thereon, a bifurcated long lever 15 also arranged within the base and pivotally connected with the sameand thev short lever, a platform 16 arranged above the opening. in the base and provided with downwardly projecting legs ,or brackets 17 which are pivotally mount The several pivotal connections between the short and long levers themselves andbetween these levers and other members of the scale are constructed as follows:
20repres'ents main bearing pivot pins arranged on the scale leversand eachhaving a downwardly tapering V-shaped front face or knifecedge ,21 anda rounded back face 22, and 23 represents horizontal supporting pins mounted on the baseimmediately above the lever pins 20. I 24 representsfbase or frame shackles or hangers each of which is' pivotedat its upper end on one of thesupporting pins 23 and is provided on its lower parthwitli a bearing 25 upon which the lower knife" edge 'of'a' lever pivot pin rests, as
' shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 7.- Each of the pivot pins. 20 is detachably connected with'the, ad-
jacent scale lever as follows 26v "represents a notch, preferably V- horizontal side, and forming a -seat which is engaged bythe lower knife edge of one of the pivot lpins 20, This 'pin isheld in engagement with therespective lever by atyoke of U-form the upright legs27 of which straddle part of this lever whilethe cross piece or bar28 of the same extends across that side of the-lever opposite to that containing h T' vot pin h, c v i The free ends of thelegs of the yoke are prev dsdni h. qp ain s vwhichreceivethe respective pin '20 adjacent to opposite verti- 'shaped,'arranged transversely onthe upper reasons.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 7, the yoke of each main bearing pivot pin 20 is moved in a clamping or tightening direction by means of a clamping screw 30 which works in a threaded opening in the cross piece or bar of the respective yoke and engages with the adjacent horizontal surface of the respective lever. By this means the pivot pin can be very quickly tightened or loosened on the lever when assembling or disineinbering the parts and permit of keeping the scale in a sensitive and accurate condition. v
31 represents the platform pivot pins of the pivotal connections between the platform legs 17 and the levers. In this case the pivot pins 81 have their knife edges projecting upwardly and engaging with V shaped notches 32 in the underside of the levers and the platform legs 17 are suspended from these pins by shackles 3 1 connected at their lower ends by pins 35 with the legs 17 while their upper parts are provided with bearings 36 engaging with the knife edges of these pivot pins. Each of the pivot pins 31 is detachably held in engagement with the seat on the respective lever by a U-shaped yoke, the legs 37 of which are arranged vertically and straddle the lever and are provided with openings 38 which receive the pivot pin 31 on opposite sides of the lever and a cross piece 39,-which has a threaded opening which receives a clamping screw 40 pressing against the side of the lever opposite to the notch 32 therein.
41, 12 represent the upper and lower pivot pins of the center connection, the upper pivot pin having its knife edge turned upwardly and engaging its opposite ends with V-shaped seats 13 on the underside of the upper or long lever 15, While the lower pivot pin 12 has its knife edge turned downwardly and engaged at its opposite ends with V-shaped seats 44 on the upper side of the lower or short lever. The two center connection pivots are connected with each other by a shackle 45 which is rovided with upper and lower bearings 46, 41 engaging with the knife edges of the upper and lower center connection pins between the ends of the same. Each end of the lower center pin 42 is detachably connected with the adjacent part of the short lever by a U-shaped yoke having vertical legs 48 provided with openings 49 which receive the lower pin 42 and a cross bar 50 which receives a screw 51 pressing against the underside of the short lever, the construction and operation of this clamping device being the same as that employed in connection with the main bearing pins 20. The upper center pin ll is clamped at each end against the upper long lever by a U-shaped yoke having vertical legs 52 wh ch straddle the long lever and have openings 53 receiving the respective pivot pin 11 and a cross bar or piece arranged over the upper lever opposite the notch 13 therein. In order to tighten each of the upper center connection yokes, a wedge is driven between the upper side of the long lever and the under side of the cross bar of the respective upper center yoke,
as shown in Figs. 1. 2, 3, 4:, and 5, thereby holdingthe carts in place relatively to each I other without the use of screws as in the be fore mentioned yokes.
56 represents the steelyard pivot pin mounted on the free end of the long lever and having its downwardly turned knife edge engaged by a bearing arranged on a shackle or link similar to the hereinbefore described shackles and connected with the lower end of the steelyard. This steelyard pivot is detachably clamped on the free end of the long lever in the same manner in which this is done with reference to the lower center pivot pin 12 on the short lever and the same characters of reference are therefore employed to designate corre sponding parts.
Instead ofusing either a screw or a wedge to tighten the yoke on the pivot pin and hold the latter in place on a scale lever, this may be accomplished by providing the cross piece or bar 58 of the U-shaped yoke with two lips 59 on its transverse edges which are bent inwardly against one horizontal side of the scale lever 60 and thereby draw the knife edge of the pivot pin 61 carried by the legs 62 of this yoke against the correspondingly shaped seat 63 on the opposite side of this lever, as shown in Fig. 11.
Each of the several forms of fastening permit of quickly and securely attaching the pivot pin to the yoke lever instead of casting the lever on the pivot pin.
I claim as my invention:
1. A scale lever provided with a seat, a pivot pin engaging said seat, and means for fastening said pivot to said scale lever comprising a U-shaped yoke the legs of which straddle said scale lever and are provided with openings for receiving the pivot pin on opposite sides of the lever and the cross piece of which is arranged on that side of said lever opposite to its seat.
2. A scale lever provided with a seat, a pivot pin engaging said seat, and means for fastening said pivot to said scale lever comprisin a U-shaped yoke the legs of Which stradd c said scale lever and are provided with openings for receiving the pivot pin on opposite sides of the lever and the cross piece of .which is arranged on that side of said lever opposite to its seat, and clamping e means which operateto draw said clip in a direction for pressing said pivot pin against saidseatp ,e
