Be it known that l, Hacnnnr MORRISON, a citizen ci the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blank Feeding and Chucking Devices, of which the follovvin@ is a speciiication.
rllhis invention relates to automatic machines for operating upon the ends of short cylindrical blanks, such as those from which pipe nipples, stud bolts, etc., are made, and more particularly to the feeding and chucking or" the blanks to be operated upon.
The present invention is designed especially for use in connection with automatic machines for finishing the ends of nipple blanks, such, for example, as that shown and described in my copending application Serial No. 366,662, tiled March 17, 1920. The invention is not, however, limited to use with machines of this type since it may be employed with advantage in connection with any finishing or threading machine in which there is a vertically reciprocating` chuck jaw for moving the blanks to and gripping them in position to be operated upon by the tool.

A. further object is to arrange such a feeding in device so that it v-ll cooperate with a stripper of the type shown in the above inentioned application, such 'feeding in device and stripper serving to automatically deliver blanks to and remove them from the chucking device respectively, in proper timed relation.
In order that the invention may be readily understood reference is had to the accompanying dra-Wings forming part of this specification, and in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the bed oli' the machine, and 2 the legs or pedestals on which it is supported. 3 indicates a box or receptacle into which the linished blanks are delivered by the stripper, and 4 designates a pair ot alined tools arranged to operate upon the ends ci" the blank. Disposed between the tools 1 is the chucking device which comprises a fixed upper jaw 6 and a movable lower jaw 7. The upper jaw is carried in a suitable yoke 8 supported by posts or standards 9 set into the bed of the machine.
The lower jaw 7 is carried et the upper end oir a plunger, which, as shown in the irst mentioned above copending application, comprises two sections 10 and 11 separated by a helical spring 12, the whole being enclosed within and slidable through a guide or housing 13. A shield lllpreierably surrounds the upper end of the plunger so as to exclude 'foreign matter from the guide or housing. rlhe lower end of the plunger section 11 carries a roller 15 which is in en gagement with a suitably shaped cam 16 mounted upon a cam shaft 17 journaled in brackets 18. From an inspection of Figures 1 and 2 it will be seen that as the cam 16 revolves the jaw or chuck member 7 is vertically reciprocated, the cam being so shaped as to produce a substantial dwell at both the upper and lower limits of movement of the plunger,
readily suggest themselves to a skilled mechanic, and in Figure 4 I have illustrated one other such construction which may be employed to advantage. Referring to this figure, it will be seen that the stripper and carrier 33 and 35 are substantially similar to the corresponding parts numbered 23 and 2,5 in the other views, and that the ends 34 and 36 of these members are shaped substantially as above described. Instead of being secured to a single reciprocating bar, however, the stripper and carrier are shown in Figure 4 as secured to the upper ends of independent levers 37 and 33 pivoted at 39 and 40, respectively, to fixed brackets 41 and 42, these levers being provided at their lower ends with weights 43 and 44, respectively. A pair of plungers 45 and 46 slide freely through guides 47 and 48 carried by the machine frame and are disposed to engage the levers 37 and 38, respectively, at a point below their pivots. The plungers 45 and 46 carry at their inner ends rollers 49 and 50, which engage suitably shaped independent cams 51 and 52 carried by the cam shaft 17.
The levers 37 and 38 are thus moved in one direction by gravity acting upon the weights 43 and 44, and in the other direction by the plungers 45 and 46, the cams 16, 51 and 52 being so shaped and angularly disposed as to effect the movement of the stripper, carrier, and chuck jaw in proper timed relation to carry out the same cycle of operations as above described in connection with the other gures.
While I have shown the stripper and carrier in Figures 1 and 2 as formed of two separatepairs of bars, it is obvious that these devices may be formed from two continuous strips or bars extending from the standard 21 to thel standard 22, and suitably bent or shaped to perform the functions described.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an exceedingly simple, positive and effective deviceJ for automatically feeding blanks to and removing them from an automatic chucking device, and it is thought that the many advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated without further discussion.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a rotary tool and a chuck device for gripping the blank at a point between its ends and holding -it in alinement with the axis of said tool, said chuck device comprising a pair of jaws one of which is movable toward and away from the other in a direction at right angles to said axis, means for periodically moving said jaw, a carrier for conveying a blank to such chuck device, said carrier having means to receive and wholly support the blank, and means for bodily reciprocating said carrier in synchronism with said movable aw.
2. In a machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a tool and a chuck device for holding the blank in horizontal position, said chuck device comprising a fixed upper and movable lower jaw, means for vertically reciprocating said lower jaw, a carrier for conveying a blank to said chuck device, said carrier having means for wholly supporting the blank, and means for bodily moving said carrier toward said chuck device as the lower jaw descends, so as to carry the blank into a poN sition above such jaw when the latter has reached its lower limit of travel, and sustain it in such position as the lower jaw moves upward, and means for moving said carrier away from the chuck device after said lower jaw has ascended a predetermined distance.
3. In a machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a rotary tool, and a chuck device for holding the blank in horizontal position, said chuck device comprising a fixed upper and movable lower jaw, means for vertically reciprocating said lower jaw, a carrier for conveying a blank to said chuck device, said carrier having a blank receiving and supporting pocket, and means for reciprocating said carrier in definite timed relation with said movable jaw so as to bring said pocket into a position above said lower jaw when the latter is at the lower limit of itsV travel.
4. In a. machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a rotary tool, and a chuck device for holding the blank in horizontal position adjacent said tool, said chuck device comprising a liXed upper and movable lower jaw, said lower jaw having at its end a seat adapted to receive the blank, means for vertically reciprocating said lower jaw, a carrier for wholly supporting a blank, said carrier having a blank receiving pocket, and means for reciprocating said carrier in a plane lying between the upper and lower limits of travel of said seat, and in definite timed relation with said movable jaw so as to bring said pocket alternately into and out of a vertical plane through said sea-t and tool axis.
5. In a machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a rotary tool, and a chuck device for holding the blank in horizontal `position adjacent said tool, said chuck device comprising a fixed upper and movable lower jaw, said lower jaw having at its end a seat adapted to receive the blank, means for vertically reciprocating said lower jaw, -a carrier for supporting a blank, said carrier comprising a pair oi spaced members and having a blank receiving pocket termed in said memeeL bers, and means for periodically shifting said carrier so as to bring said pocket and seat into the same vertical plane, with said members disposed one on each side of the path of travel of said lower jaw.
6. In a machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a rotary tool, and a chuck device for holding the blank in horizontal position adjacent said tool, said chuck device comprising a fixed upper and movable lower jaw, said lower jaw havingat its end a seat adapted to receive the blank, means for vertically reciprocating said lower jaw, a carrier for wholly supporting a blank, and automatic means, operating after the said lower jaw has reached its lowermost position, for shifting said carrier toward the chuck device in such manner as to-bring the blank supported thereby into a position directly above said lower jaw, whereby, when said lower jaw ascends, the seat formed therein engages the blank and lifts it from the carrier.
7. In a machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a rotary tool, and a chuck device for holding the blank in horizontal position adjacent said tool, said chuck device comprising a fixed upper and movable lower jaw, said lower jaw having atits end a seat adapted to receive the blank, means for vertically reciprocating said lower jaw, a carrier for wholly supporting a blank, automatic means, operating after the said lower jaw has reached its lowermost position, for shifting said carrier toward the chuck device in such manner as to bring the blank supported thereby into a position directly above said lower jaw, whereby, when said lower jaw ascends., the seat formed therein engages the blank and lifts it from the carrier, and automatic means for subsequently shifting said carrier away from the chuck device before said lower jaw descends.
8. In a machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a rotary tool, and a chuck device for holding the blank in horizontal position adjacent said tool, said chuck device comprising a fixed upper and movable lower jaw, said lower jaw having at its end a seat adapted to receive the blank, means for vertically reciprocating said lower jaw, a carrier for supporting a blank, said carrier comprising a Leganes pair of spaced members adapted to straddle said lower jaw, and having a pocket formed in said members, in which pocket the blank rests, and automatic means for shifting said carrier so as to bring said pocket into the same vertical plane with said seat after said lower jaw has reached its lowermost position, permitting said carrier to so remain for a deiinite time interval, during which said lower jaw rises and the seat therein receives and lifts the blank from the pocket, and subsequently shifting said carrier away.
9. In a machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a rotary tool, and a chuck device for holding the blank in horizontal position adjacent said tool, said chuck device comprising upper and lower jaws, said lower jaw having at its upper end a seat adapted to receive the blank, means for vertically reciprocating said lower jaw, a stripper and a blank carrier mounted on opposite sides of the chuck device for movement toward and from the same, means for shifting the carrier toward the chuck device while the lower jaw is in its lowermost position so as to bring the blank supported thereby directly over said seat, whereby, when said lower jaw ascends. the blank is lifted thereby from said carrier, and moved into position to be operated upon by the tool, and means for then automatically shifting the carrier away and projecting the stripper into a position below and in the path of the finished blank as the lower jaw, bearing such blank in its seat, descends, so that the finished blank is brought into engagement with and deposited upon said stripper, and thus removed.
10. In a machine for manufacturing cylindrical articles, the combination with a tool mounted to rotate about a horizontal axis, of a chuck adjacent said tool and comprising an upper fixed and lower movable jaw, a. carrier for wholly supporting s,
blank, means for shifting said carrier so as to cause it to carry a blank into a position immediately beneath said upper jaw, and means for causing said lower jaw to rise and first lift the blank from said carrier, and then grip it between itself and said upper jaw.
