Description

J. M. JONES. DOMESTIC PRINTING MACHINE.
Patenten/my 2o', 1856.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. lJONES, OE PALMYRA, NEW YORK.
PRINTING- MACHINE.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. JONES, of the town of Palmyra, in the county of Vayne, in the State of New York, have made certain Improvements in Domestic Printing-liIaehines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents a top view pot' the machine. Fig. Il is a longitudinal section; and Fig. III is a view of the under side, showing the different mechanism.
' A is a wheel with a notched or toothedrim, situated in a horizontal position, and has two motions, a revolving or rotary motion, and a motion in the direction of its axis. The type is attached around the outside of the periphery of the rim with theface of the type projecting a little below the same.
B is theindexring, situated upon the wheel A and held stationary by the arm a.
D is a lever attached to the bracket E, one pend of4 said bracket is fastened to the wheel A, and the other end passes through an opening i n the wheel A and rests upon a circular plate, N, lying below the wheel A and attached to the frame F of the machine. By this lever D the wheel A receives through the hand of the operator its revolving or rotary motion, and all the mechanism of the machine is worked by said lever.
C is an arm, one end of which is attached to a pivot in the stand O and the other end fits into the notches 'or teeth on the rim of the wheel A: By this arm C the second motion is communicated to the wheel A, by which the type is pressed down and made to bear on the paper when an impression is to be made, and at the same time insuring always the right position of the wheel A.
G is a wheel attached to a hollow shaft, P, which passes through the center of the wheel A, and is attached to the same by the pin d in such a manner as to turn round with said Wheel A, and having at the same time a second motion, forward or backward, communicated to the same. Around the outside periphery ofthe wheel G projections are made corresponding in number and thickness with the type round the wheel A.
H is an endless band to which the paper is fastened and attached to the carriage L,which moves on the ways K K.
M is a rod to which the carriage L is attached. This rod M is connected with the rod Q, moving in the guides h 71., and is actedupon by the projections on the periphery of the wheel G, as well as by the spring s, by which arrangement the carriage L, with the paper attached, is caused to move according to the thickness of the type, together with the space between the letters, as soon as the impression is made.
It is a lever connected with the rod Q and used to move the carriage L l'or the purpose of making the proper spaces between the v'ords.
Sis a rod passing through the hollow shaft P of the wheel G and connecting the end of the lever D with the arm 4, fast on the rockshaft X, to move the different parts.
J J are the ink-rollers by which the type is inked.
The letter-paper is attached tothe band H on the carriage L, which latter is then placed on the rod M and upon the ways K K and pushed intoward the center'of the wheel before printing is commenced. As the wheel A, with the type attached, revolves or is moved round by the handle D, each type receivesits ink for printingas thesame passes over the inkrollers J J. The operator turns by the handle D the wheel A until the pointer V is opposite the letter on the index-ring B which he intends to print, and then lpresses said handle downward. By this operation the arm C is pressed into the tooth on the rim of the wheel A above the type corresponding to the letter indicated on the index-ring B, and presses the wheel A down, so that this specific letter leaves its impression on the paper. This arm C receives its motion from the lever D through the rods u m, in connection with the arms 2, 3, and 6,`fast on the rockshafts X and Y. By the same operation the rod p, which is connected with the arm 5 O11 the rock-shaft Y and with the hub of the wheel @communicates to said wheel a side motion, acting thereby upon the rod Qthereby moving the carriage L a small distance forward corresponding to the thickness of the type, together with the space necessary from one letter to the other. The wheel G is pushed back again by the action of the spring w and the rod Q by the action cf e y I l 14,919
the spring s. At the completion of every word with the mechanism by the rod S, passing the lever R, the end of which projects through through the hollow shaft of the wheel G, subthe frame, is moved by the linger, which acts stantially as described. upon the rod Q and moves thereby the carriage 2.
