Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
V IMPROVEMENT IN ISINGLASS [N THE LIQUID FORM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149, 165, dated March 31, 1374 application filed March 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC STANWOOD, of Gloucester, Essex county, and State of Massachnsetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Liquid Isinglass, of which the following is a specification:
My invention has for its object to furnish isinglass put up in a liquid form ready for use. My invention consists of liquid isinglass having a small quantity of alcohol mixed with it, and put up in airtight cans, as hereinafter fully described.
In preparing my liquid isin glass the sounds are steeped in the usual way, but the scum, instead of being taken off, is stirred in. The
isinglass is then carefully strained through sieves and cloths. The efi'ect of the scum upon the isinglass when treated in this way is to make it more limber than when it is skimmed off in the old way. In soaking the sounds I add one pound of washing-soda to each barrel of the cold water in which they are soaked, which removes the oil, and gives the isin glass a better color and quality. The soda solution, after standing twelve hours, is poured off and thrown away, the sounds are then steeped six hours in new clear water, after which the liquid is strained, has a small quantity of alcohol added to it, and is poured, while still hot, into tin cans, which are then sealed air-tight.
Isinglass thus prepared is ready for use at any time, and is a better article than the dry isin glass, as drying, especially in Warm weather, injures it.
In using isinglass it must not be boiled, but only scalded, as boiling injures it.
For court-plaster, it must be dried in a cool place.
For clarifying lager-beer, &c., it need be only blood-warm.
WVhen applied to wood, glass, or leather beltin g, they may be dried in a warm place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Liquid isinglass having a small quantity of alcohol mixed with it, and put up in air-tight cans, substantially as herein described.
ISAAC- STANWOOD.
