Description
G. C. FULLER ADVERTISING DEVICE April 15-, 1924. 1,490,262
Filed March 2, 1922 WITNE6T8E8 (LC. Fullc GAINS CONNANT FULLER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Application filed March 2, 1922. Serial No. 540,506.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAINS C. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of @hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to advertis ing devices for use with the operating handles of gas lighters or for use with wire handles in general, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies in its organization an element adapted also to constitute a container for the sparking points of the igniting device, and to display advertising matter; and whichis of simple and durable construction, reliable in operation and easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the'invention reside in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which'will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention embodied in a gas lighter;
Figure 2 is a view in transverse vertical section taken approximately at right angles on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a detail view, partly insection and partly in elevation of the adjustable holder for the pyrophoric element;
Figure 4 is a detail view in transverse vertical section on the container and associated structure of the gas lighter;
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the telescopic sleeves; and
Figure 6 is a view in elevation of another embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the prel erred embodiments of the invention, and especially to Figures 1 to 5, it will be seen that the igniting device of the present invention contemplates a pair of spring arms or operating handles 10 of resilient material and integral with a metallic coil spring 11 from the terminals of which the spring arms 10 extend. Each of the spring arms or handles includes a single convolution 12 to give it capacity for motion at right angles to the spring 11, that is at right angles to the mogage each other.
tion permitted by the spring 11. One of the arms 10 carries a holder 13 including a thumb actuated adjusting plug 1 which abuts and controls a sparking point 15 of pyroplioric material. The other arm 10 is provided with an extension 16 of general U- shape in which is seated a serrated bar 17 which constitutes an abrading'element and which is adapted to coact with the pyrophoric element 15 to produce the flame or spark whereby the ignition is effected.
A container, designated generally at 20, is arranged in the convolutions of the coil spring 11. This container comprises an outer sleeve 21 and an inner sleeve 22-telescoping within the outer sleeve 21. Each. of these sleeves is constructed of resilient material and is split longitudinally whereby when telescoped, the sleeves frictionally en- The sleeve 21 is first inserted in the convolutions of the coil springs 11 and its free end is then swaged or otherwise acted upon to form the flange 23 which engages the adjacent convolution of the adjacent coil spring 11 to maintain the sleeve in position within the coil spring. The sleeve 21 is provided with a head 24 having a marginal flange 25 which receives the tongues 26 formed on the adjacent or inner end of the sleeve whereby the head is secured to the sleeve. The outer face of the head is adapted to receive and display advertising matter. The sleeve 22 is prov'ded with a similar head 27 having a flange 28 receiving similar tongues 29 formed on the sleeve 22 and engaged by the flange 28. When the sleeves are telescoped, as shown in Figure 4, the split sleeve 22 frictionally engages the sleeve 21 and maintains the sleeves telescoped. When assembled, as shown in Figure 4, the container constitutes a bearing for the eonvolutions of the coil spring and is also adapted to receive and retain the supply of sparking points of pyrophorie material. The exposed positions of the heads of the container is adapted to receive and display the advertising matter that may be desirable-to associate with the igniter.
In Figure 6 the invention is shown enibodied in a wire handle which may be utilized with a hammer, ice pick, screw-driver or the like. The handle embodies a pair of spring arms or handles, designated at 30 and 31 crossed, as at 32, at the end adja cent to the tool (not shown) and provided at its free end with a metallic coil spring 33,
the terminals of which are integral with the arms 30 and 31. The ad .*ertising device includes a tubular body portion 34- extending through the coil and having heads and 36 rigidly secured thereto and adapted to receive and display advertising matter or the like on their exposed faces.
The head and body portion may be tentirely rigid or they may be removable as in the preferred embodiment in order to provide the container.
I claim:
1. In an advertising device of the character described, in combination with a coil spring having a pair of spring arms carrying a pyrophoric element and an abrading element, a' container arranged within and constitutinga bearing for the coil spring and comprising an outer sleeve having a flange engaged with convolutions of the coil spring to retain the sleeve therewithin, an inner sleeve telescoped within said outer sleeve and frictionally engaged therewith and heads for said sleeve having exposed surfaces adapted to display advertising matter.
2. A container for use with igniting devices comprising telescoping sleeves, the inner of said sleeves being split and frictionally engaged with the outer sleeve, tongues formed on said sleeves, and heads for said sleeves having surfaces adapted to receive and display advertising matter and having a retaining flange adapted to receive and engage the tongues of said sleeves.
8. A container for use with igniting devices comprising telescoping sleeves, the inner of said sleeves being split and frictionally engaged with the outer sleeve, and heads for said sleeves having surfaces adapted to receive and display advertising matter.
4:. A container for use with igniting devices comprising telescoped sleeves and heads for said sleeves adapted to receive and display advertising matter.
5. In an advertising device for use with Wire handles including a pair of arms and a coil connecting the arms at one end, a tubular body portion and head connected to aid body portion and adapted to receive and display advertising matter.
