Be it known that I, Josnrn KAUFMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Merchandise-Display Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to boxes adapted to receive and hold merchandise and properly conceal and protect the same while the merchandise is held in stock or in shipment and which boxes may without disturbing the contents thereof, be transformed into display boxes adapted to stand on a store counter, for illustration, and expose a portion of their contents and at the same time display above the same an advertisement or other matter pertaining to the merchandise, such advertisement or the like being printed on the reverse face of what is normally the cover for the box and which cover in accordance with my invention is adapted to be folded upwardly and secured in a special manner in an inclined position overthe box of merchandise when the box is to be stood on end on a sales counter or the like.

The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away and partly in section, of a merchandise display box embodying my invention, the box being shown in its open display condition and as having one of its packages of merchandise in process of being ejected for delivery, for illustration, to a purchaser thereof;

Fig. 3 is a front perspective View of my merchandise display box shown complete, and in its open display condition and illustrates the method of ejecting the packages of sold merchandise therefrom;

Fig. 4'is a rear perspective view of the same and illustrates the box members at one side of the box in a partly unfolded condition, this being for the purpose of aiding in an understanding of the manner of folding the box-blank to produce the box;

In the drawings, 10 designates the onepiece fiat blank of paper or other suitable material which I have designed on special outlines and in special proportions to produce when folded on certain lines positioned by me, the merchandise display box of my invention,

The blank 10 is shown in. Fig. 5 and comprises, if we consider the box in its final 26 when sai display position and structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a front display or window section 11, a back section 12 corresponding in outline and proportions with said window section, a bottom section 13 connecting with the contiguous edges of the said front and back sections and constituting the bottom of the box, a top section'14 connected on a fold line 15 with the upper edge of the back section 12 and constituting the top of the box, a narrow front apron section 16 connected on a fold line 17 with the front edge of the top section 14 and folded downwardly at the back of the aforesaid front display section 11, upper oposite side sec tions 18 connected on fold-lines 19 with the ends of the top section 14 and normally extending downwardly therefrom and termis nating above the bottom section 13, opposite corresponding side sections 20 connected on fold-lines 21 with the opposite vertical edges of the front display or window section 11 and constituting the exterior side portions of the box, lower door or flap sections 22 connected on weakened lines 23 with the body of the side sections 20 and constituting portions of said side sections, side securing sections 24 connected on fold lines 25 with the outer edges of the side sections 20 above the doors or flaps 22 and which, in forming the box, are folded in behind the vertical edge portions of the back section 12, and an advertising display section 26 connected on a fold line 27 with the upper edge of and having about the same shape and dimensions as the front or window section .11, and said display section 26 having side wings 28 connected therewith on fold or weakened lines 29 and serving as supporting props or braces for the section section is in its upper display position shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, and said display section 26 being adapted to be folded downwardly against the front or window section 11 (Fig. 6) and permit its side wings 28 to be folded reversely on the lines 29 and lie against the side sections 20. this being the condition of the sections of the blank when the blank has been folded into the closed-box form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and in that condition of the box, which is the one intended for storage or shipment. I preferably seal the same by means of an encompassing band 30 which may be of paper and secured in position by an adhesive substance in the commonly known manner. The band 30 secures the box in closed condition, and when said band is broken the box may be transformed from its closed position shown in Figs. 6 and 'Z, to its display and sales position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

The front or window section 11 contains a series of vertical openings 31 spaced apart by portions of said front section and through said openings 31 the contents of the box may be observed. In the presentinstance the box is shown as containing two vertical parallel layers of packages of Ever- Ready safety-razor blades, each layer comprising three vertical columns-of four packages each of said blades.

lVhen the box is placed in its display position it will stand on its bottom 13, and when the box is in its closed and sealed condition, shown in Figs. 6 and 7, it is of rectangular formation and may rest on its bottom 13 or on any side of its rectangle. In Figs. 6 and 7, I show the box, for convenience, as resting on its back 12.

In forming the closed package or box shown in Fig. 6, from the blank shown in Fig. 5, the front section 11 and back section 12 may be folded upwardly on the fold or! scored or weakened lines 33, 34, respectively, said sections 11, 12 then being parallel with. each other and standing at right angles to the bottom section 13 upon which may be placed the two layers of packages 32 ar ranged as shown in Fig. 4, after which the top section 14 may be folded over upon the top of said layers of packages, the apron section 16 being folded downwardly at the front of the upper packages and at the back of the front or window section 11, as shown in Fi 1 and 2, and the end mem bers 18 of sai top section being folded down against the outer ends of the upper lines of packages, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4. The side sections 20 are then folded back against the said end members 18 and against the outer ends of the lower lines of packages 32 below said members 18, and the members 24 of said side sections 20 are tucked in between the back layer of packages 32 and the back section 12 of the box. After the side sections 20 have been thus positioned, the cover-section 26 is folded, on the line 27, flat against the front or window section 11 and the members 28 of said section 26 are folded, on the lines 29, against the side sections 20, or to the position shown in Fig. 6, thus completing the formation of the closed box or package, which may be firmly secured in its closed condition by the band 30 or the like.

When it is desired to transform the closed box into one for the display of the merchandise or into the condition shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the securing band 30 is removed, the box is placed on its bottom 13, the cover section 26 is turned upwardly and rearwardly to expose the window section 11 and there-at the packages 32, and the members 28 of said cover section are folded rearwardly on the lines 29 and their then lower rear corners are inserted downwardlybetween the upper ends of the side sections 20 and the contiguous portions of the downwardly turned members 18 of the top section 14, as indicated in Figs. 1 and t, in which position said members 28 serve to prop and secure the cover section 26 in its upper rearwardly inclined position shown in Fig. 2. The members 28 are blunt at their ends adjacent to the front section 11, and thence said members gradually become narrower toward the outer edge of the cover section 26, by reason of which said members 28 render the box more attractive and avoid undue rearwardly projecting proportions at the sides of the upper end of the cover section 26 when said section is in display position. The cover section 26 is intended to bear on its front exposed face a suitable advertisement pertaining to the packages 32.

When the box is in its display condition shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the sections thereof, with the aid of the packages 32, are

in interlocked relation and the integrity of the box is maintained without additional securing means.

It may be seen on reference to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, that the two vertical layers of packages 32 completely fill the interior of the box, that the members 18 of the top section 14 extend *downwardly against the ends of the three upper horizontal rows of front and back packages 32 and that the flaps or doors 22 of the sides 20 are at the ends of the lower row of front and back packages 32 and are ofsufficient size to permit, when turned upwardly, the discharge of said packages endwise through the openings or doorways left by them.

When the box is in display position on a counter or shelf, the nature of the contents of the packages 32 may be observed from their wrappings through the window openings 31 and will also be indicated by the advertisements on the displaycover section 26.

When a package 32 has been sold and is to be delivered to a customer, the doors or flaps 22 will be turned upwardly, and the attendant will press with his finger against the end of one lower row of packages and in that way cause the package at the other end of said ,row to move outwardly from the box, in the manner indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. Each package will be completely discharged, and as each package is thus discharged by pressure applied to one end of the row of packages, the blank space left thereby at said end of the .row will become filled by the settling down of the package above it into such space, whereby the lower front and back rows of packages will extend from side to side of the box so long as there are packages above them to settle down and refill saidrows as packages are successively sold. The doors 22 are wide enough to permit the discharge of packages from either the front or back horizontal lower row of packages or from both said rows if two packages are to be delivered at one time. The box may be made of suitable proportions to contain one, two or more vertical layers of packages 32, but I have found that the preferred size of box is that. shown, having a capacity for holding two vertical layers of one dozen each of the packages.

The box of my invention and the advantages of its construction and use will be fully understood from the foregoing description and hence further detailed explanation is thought to be unnecessary. The invention is not confined to all the specific details hereinbefore described, and these details may be modified, without departure from my invention, within the scope of-the appended claims.

,What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A foldable merchandise display box of the character described, comprising a bottom section, vertical parallel front and back sections extending upwardly therefrom and said front section being of window type to expose the merchandise packages contained within the box, atop section connected with said back section and having a forward apron member for insertion between said packages and the upper portion of said front section, side sections connected with one of said vertical sections and havin outer members for insertion between sai packages and the other vertical section and doorways at their lower ends for the discharge of the packages, and a cover section connected with the upper edge of said front section and adapted to close over the same and having side edge members to be folded against the said side sections when the box is to be closed and to be reversely folded when said cover section is turned upwardly to display position, said side edge members when thus reverselyfolded being adapted at their then lower ends to be inserted downwardly between the ends of said top section and the upper ends of said side sections for securing said cover section in its display position.

2. A foldable merchandise display box as defined in claim 1, in which the side sections have hinged flaps or doors for said doorways, said flaps. or doors being capable of being opened to permit pressure to be applied to one end of a lower horizontal row of the packages for effecting the egress of the package at the other end of the row.

A foldable merchandise display box of the character described, comprising a bot tom section, parallel front and back sections extending upwardly therefrom and said front section being of window type to expose the merchandise packages contained in the box, a top section connected with said back sec tion and having a forward apron member for insertion between said packages and said &

front section and also end members to be folded downwardly against said packages, side sections extending backwardly from said front section and having rear edge members for insertion between said packages and said back section and openings at their lower ends for the discharge of the packages, and a cover section connected with the upper edge of said front section and adapted to close over the same and having side edge members to tbe folded against the w said side sections when the box is to be closed and to be reversely folded when said cover section is turned upwardly to display position, said side edge members whentlius reversely folded being adapted at their then lower ends to be inserted between said side sections and the end members of said top section for securing said cover section in its display position..

4. A foldable merchandise display box as defined in claim 3, in which the end mem-- one end of a lower horizontal row of the' packages for efiecting the egress of the package at the other end of the row.
