SHADE HOLDER.

To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED I. l-IrnscI-l- FELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shade Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in shade-holders of the class designed for application to the covers of standard electric lamp-sockets, the object being to produce, at a low cost, a simple, efficient, convenient and tasteful device, constructed with particular reference to stabilizing the connection between the socket cover and the shade.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a shade-holder having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, I employ a one-piece shade-ring comprising a mounting-flange 10, an upstanding, threaded sleeve 11 and a horizontal bearing-surface 12 extending inwardly from the upper edge of the said threaded sleeve. As shown, the said ring is fastened by soldering or otherwise directly to the flattened upper face of the upper edge of the annular band 13 of a skeleton shadeframe having a plurality of curved ribs 14, the lower ends of which are united by drooping or festoon-like bands 15. By preference, the band 18, ribs 14 and bands 15 are cast in one piece. Into the spaces between them I .preferably insert panels 16 of semi-transdiameter to the mouth or open end of a standard bell-shaped, metal socket-cover 17 herein shown as having an annular terminal flange 18 merging into a fillet 19, from which it is separated by a draft-shoulder 20, the said fillet merging into the body o-f the socket 17. It is not essential that the bearing-surface 12 and the edge of the flange 18 shall correspond in diameter, but only that they shall be sufficiently like in diameter to have full bearing of one upon the other for stabilizing the union between the shade-ring and the socket-cover, when they are drawn together by the coupling-collar, loosely mounted upon the said cover. This coupling-collar, as shown, consists of a threaded ring 21 adapted to be screwed upon the upstanding sleeve 11 of the shade-ring, and with a knurled operating or draft-ring 22, the outer edge of which is fastened to the threaded ring 21 and the inner edge of which is adapted to engao'e with the draftshoulder 2O aforesaid. rIhe coupling-ring as thus constructed is free to be lifted with respect to the socket-cover 17, by which, however, it will be retained in place.
In using my improved device, the parts are brought together so that the inwardlyturned edge of the open end or mouth of the socket-cover rests directly upon the bearing-surface 12 of the shade-ring, after which the said cover and shade-ring are firmly drawn together by screwing the couplingring down over the upstanding threadedsleeve of the shade-ring, whereby the parts are not only firmly drawn together but also accurately centered, and whereby the union between the parts, effected by the threads of the sleeve 11 and ring 21 is stabilized by the bearing of the edge of the cover upon the bearing-surface 12.
