This invention relates to certain improvements in overwinding preventers and it islan' object of the invention to provide a novel is a specification, reference being had to theand'improved device of this general cliaracter wherein the means for rotating the winding shaft of a spring becomes inoperative when the spring has been "wound to'a predetermined degree.
It is also an object of the-invention to provide a novel and improved device of'this general character comprising two members one threaded upon the other, whereby said members are normally maintained for uni- V taryrotation but are disconnected upon adnormal resistance being offered by the spring being wound upon unitary rotation of said members.

Loosely surrounding the head 7 inwardly of but immediately adjacent to the nut member 12 is a washer 16 provided at its outer marginal portion with suitably positioned elongated recesses or notches 17 which receive the rods 5, the ends ofv each of said notches or recesses 17 providing stop shoulders 18 for'contact with a rod 5 whereby the washer 16 is permitted to have limited rotation independently of the nut 1ncmber 12. e I
Interposed between the plate 4 and the nut 12 is an expansible member 19 herein disclosed as a coiled spring encircling the head 7 and which operates to constantly urge the nut member 12 and the associated washer 16 toward the plate 3 whereby the nut member 12 isnormally maintained in threaded engagement'with the head 7.
The inner marginal portion of the washer 16 is provided with suitably positioned notches or recesses120 each oneof which is adapted to coincide with an end of a groove or channel 15 when the washer 16 is at the limit of its movement in one direction so that the nut member 12 and the washer 16 may normally have requisite driving con nection with the head 7.
l/Vith the nut member 12 and washer 16 normally in their locking engagement with the head 7, said head 7 and the shank or shaft section 2 will be caused to rotate in unison to effect the requisiteturning'movement of the shaft W tolwind thespring S associated with said shaft.
When the spring S has been wound to a desired degree the resistance of the spring S will suflicientlyretard the rotation of the shaft 1V to cause the nut member 12 to move against the tension of the expansible memher or spring 19 to an extent to disengage the nut member 12 from the threads 11 whereby the head 7 will be caused to rotate independently of the plate 3 and. with substantially a free handle. As the nut member 12 passes out of engagement with the threads 11 the pitch of said threads will impart sufficient rotation to the washer 16 to cause the inner marginal portions 20 of said washer immediately adjacent to the notches or recesses 20 therein to close the inner ends of the grooves or channels 15 whereby the nut member 12 is held against being returned by the expansible member or spring 19 into engagement with the threads 11 of the head 7. The extent of movement of the washer 16 as effected by the rotation of the head 7 is limited by contact of a second stop 18 of each of the recesses or notches 17 with a rod 5. WVith the washer 16 in this position the head 7 may be freely rotated without causing rotation of the plate 3 and the shaft W with which it is connected. 7
If it is desired to cause the nut member 12 together with the washer 16 to again have desired engagement with the head 7 it is only necessary to impart a slight reverse rotation to the'head 7 until each of the recesses 20, of the washer-l6 is brought into registry with its associated groove or channel 15.
It is to be understood that the inner marginal portion 20 of the washer 16 engages within the grooves or channels 15 of the nut member 12 whereby the washer is vcaused to have movement in unison with the member 12' and also whereby the requisite independent rotation of the washer 16' is effected. I also have interposed between the plates 3 and 4 an enclosing sleeve 21 which serves to protect the housed elements against dust or the like and also provide. means whereby lubricant may be held to V such elements to facilitate the operation thereof.

In combination with a shaft and means placed under tension by the shaft upon rotation thereof, a structure, means for coupling the structure to the shaft, a head rotatably supported by the structure and provided with means for rotating the same, a portion of said head being provided with threads, threads, means comprised in the structure for holding the nut member against rotation but permitting the same to have movement lengthwise of the head, means for constantly urging the nut member toward the threads, means for holding the nut member against engagement with the threads of the head, and means movable with the nut member as the same passes free of the threads of the head to hold said member against engagement with said threads.
3. In combination with a shaft and means placed under tension by the shaft upon rotation thereof, a structure, means for coupling the structure to the shaft, a head rotatably supported by the structure and provided with means for rotating the same, a portion of said head being provided with threads, a nut member engaged with the threads, means comprised in the structure for holding the nut member against rotation but permitting the same to have movement lengthwise of the head, means for constantly urging the nut member toward the a nut member engaged with the threads, and means for holding the nut member against engagement with the threads of the head, a washer surrounding V the head and positioned adjacent theinner face of the nut member, said washer being also engageable with the threads of the head member and passing out of engagement therewith together with the nut member upon rotation independent of the head member, said washer when free' of'the threads having limited rotation in a direction. to prevent the nut member reengaging the threads.
