Tones.
Application filed January 17, 1923. Serial No. 613,181.
To all whom it 'may camera Be it known that I, GionDANo ZILocoKI,
a citizen of Italy, and residing at Hoboken,
in the county of Hudson' and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs,vof which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tongs, pliers or similar gripping tools designed for use in gripping various kinds and classes of workpieces and moving the same from one point to another; and the object'of the invention is to provide a tool of the class and for the purpose specified with an improved body construction composed of pivotally connected members having two pairs of socket members, and means in one pair of socket members for Securing jaw members in connection therewith and the other pair of socket members being adapted to receive and support suitable handle members; and With this and other objects in view the invention consists in a tool of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, eflicient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the Views, and in which F ig. 1 is a plan view of my improved tongs in an extended position with part of the construction broken away;
Fie. 2 a side view of the tongs as shown in Eig. 1 with part of the construction shown in section;
F ig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; and,
Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 1 showing only a part of the Construction and showing different jaw members supported in connection with the tool.
In the construction sho-wn, my improved tool comprises a body portion 5 composed of two body members 6 and 7 pivoted together by a pivot pin 8, and the bod) T members 6 and 7 are provided with tubular extensions 9 and 10 at one end thereof and with other tubular extensions 11 and 12 at the opposite end thereof, the extensions 9 and 10 form one pair of socket members while the extensions 11 and 12 form another pair of socket members, said last named socket members being provided with tapered sockets to receive the ta-pered ends of handle members 13 provided at their outer or free 'ends with hand-pieces 1%, and said handle members are secured against displaceinent by pins 15 passed through the socket members 11 and 12, and the shanks of said handle members.
The pair of socket members 9 and 10 are tubular in form and split as shown at 16, said split extending through projecting ears 17 at the opposite sides of said socket members through which are passed screws or bolts 18 which serve to compress the splitr portion of said socket members and set screws 19 are also mounted in the socket members 9 and 10 inwardly of the ears 17. The set screws 19 in connection with the screws 18 which compress the split por- Vtions of said socket members are adapted to retain jaw members 20 and 21 in connection with the socket members 9 and 10.
In the Construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the jaw members 20 and 21 are bowed outwardly as shown at 22, and the jaw member 20 is provided with a fiat end portion 23, while the jaw member 21 is provided with a concavo-convex end portion 24.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have shown two similar jaw members 25 mounted in the socket members 9 and 10, and the free ends of said jaw members are substantially hook- Shaped in form as shown'at 26 and are designed particularly to grasp round or substantially round bodies.
My improved tool is designed particularly for use in handling small metallic or other bodies, or bodies of specific shape or contour in the manufacture of predetermined articles, and to this end 1 provide means for detaohably mounting suitable jaw members in connection with the tool to pick up and handle predetermined bodies. In other words, the shape, form and construction of the jaw members employed will be designed specifically to suit the articles, bodies or the like to be handled. lt will be apparent that a tool of this class will have a broad and extensive use in numerous arts, and while l have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, it will be understood that I am not. necessarily limited to these details, and vaone pair of said pair of socket members, and
means in said socket members for fixing said jaW members against displacement.
2. A tool of tlie class described comprising a body composed of movably connected members, said members being provided With oppositely directed tubular extensions forming on said body two pairs of oppositely disposed socket members, means for detachably mounting jaW members in connection With one pair of said socket members, and handle members mounted in connection With the other pair of socket members,
3. A tool of the class described comprising a body composed of movably connected members, said members being provided With oppositely directed tubular extensions forming at the opposite sides of said body pairs of socket members, one pair of socket members being split, and means for compressing the split portions of said socket members to retain suitable jaW members therein.
4:. A tool of the class described comprising a body composed of movably connected members, said members being provided With oppositely directed tubular extensions forining at the opposite sides of said body pairs of socket members, one pair of socket members being split, means for compressing the split portions of said socket members to retain suitable jaW members therein, and set screWs passed through said split socket members for retaining jaW members against accidental displacement therefrom.
5. A tool of the class described comprising a body composed of fmovably connected members, said members being provided With oppositely directed tubular extensions forining at the opposite sides of said body pairs of socket members, one pair of socket members being split, means for compressing the split portions of said socket members to retain suitable jaW members therein, set screws passed through said split socket members for retaining said 'jaW members against accidental displacement therefroin, and handle members mounted in connection With the other pair of socket members.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my-invention I have signed my name this 13th day of January, 1923.
GIORDANO ZILOCOKI.
