ticularly designed for retaining a plural ity of smaller cartons either for shipment or storage, and an object of the invention is to provide a carton of this type, which may be constructed wholly of pasteboard' or analogousmaterial and is designed to replace the tin or metal and glass boxes em ployed for retaining packages or loose cakes,
crackers or the like. 7
The metal boxes or cases used for containing cakes, crackers'or the like both for shipping and while stored on the shelves of the retailer are quite an item in the expense of the marketing of this type of goods and usually the retailer is required to make a cash deposit for every case he receives preventing his obtainingcthe use of such money, and ,it is an object of this inven tion to provide a carton which can be constructed at a comparatively low cost. and; used to retain the cakes, crackers or thelike either loose or in boxes, and the cost of which carton will be such that the manu} facturer may provide a carton for each.
lot of the goods eliminating not only the expense occasioned by the metal cases but" also eliminating the time and expense ab sorbed in looking after the metal cases and keeping the account of deposits thereon.
Another object of this invention is to provide a carton as specified which is composed of interlocking sections adapted to provide a relatively rigid carton and which has a door opening atone end thereof through which the contents of the carton may be removed.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved carton.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective of the carton showing the binder removed.
Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views of the blanks from which the carton is formed.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the carton. l
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved carton 1, which is substantially rectangular in shape is formed of the two blanks 2 and 3 each of which are formed of pasteboard'or analogous material. The blank 2 is'scored to provide four rectangular panels 4, 5, 6 and 7 which have. flaps Salong their side edges, formed" by V the scoring of the blankas shown at 9. The end panel 7 has a tab lO'formed across against its outer end, as clearly shown'in Fig. 3 of the drawings, while the panels, which forms thefront endjo'f the carton has a tongue 11 cut therefrom; the outer edge '12 of which aligns with the outer edge of the panel 1 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The panel'is cutaway as shown i at 13 to provide triangular openings at each end of the tongue 11, which triangular openings terminate in inwardly extending substantially rectangular'portions which are relatively small and located at the, ends of the tongue.
depth to'the width of the flap 10 so that.
when thebox is assembled. and the tongue is folded against the outer surface of the flaplO, in interlockingengagement therewith as shown in Fig. 2 of thedrawings, the upper or outer edge of the tongue will be flushed withthe top .of the box, which top is formed'by the end panel or rectangular panel'7.
The blank 2 when folded forms the front 14, bottom 15, rear end 16 and top 7 of the. carton, while the sides of the carton and the inner bottom thereof are formed 1 by the blank 3 which is scored transversely as shown at 18 to providetheside forming panels 19 and 20 and the inner bottom forming panel-21 when the carton is assembled, rests uponth'e upper surface of the bottom .15, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, while the side forming panels 19 and 20 formthe sides of the box, the side forming panels 19 and 20 have substantially frusto triangular tongues 23 formed thereon intermediate their ends the outer edges of which are flushed with the outer edges of the respective panels, as clearly shown in Fig. 4c of the drawings. The tongues23 interlock with the tabs 8 formed along the sides of the top forming panel 7 when the carton is The tongue 11 is equal. in 8 I assembled, and as Will be noted by particular reference to Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings the respective tongues are bent outwardly providing a relatively rigid box or carton which is reinforced at its corners and which may be cheaply constructed. The various overlapping tabs are connected by paper fasteners or analogous structures as shown at 25- to securely hold the carton in its formed position. 7
A binder strip 26 is mounted about the top a corner of the cartonand 'is secured thereto by any suitable type of adhesive, thesaid strip preferably being. formed of gumm ed paper and it serves to securely bind tongues 11 and 23 against therespectivefiaps 8 and 10 and also to cooperateinsecurely holding the carton formed. The front 8 has a door or panel 27 cuttherein which'may be opened to permit access to the interior ofthe carton for the purpose'of removing the contents therefrom, in comparatively small 'lots or in single package's thereby particularly adapting the carton for use in delicae tessen or grocery stores where comparativelycakes, crackers or the like 7 small quantities of are sold. V
The door panel 27 may be sealed when the carton is in. shipment, and the seal cut. to
permit the dispensing of the contents of the carton and by. the placing of a facsimile of the contents of the cartonon the front 4,
the contents of the'carton may be illustrated so that purchasers may readily understand the types of cakes, crackers, or the like contained in the carton.
when the carton is in shipment or before dispensing of the contents by a paper sealing- .tape as indicated at 26. i
It is, of course, to be understood that theinvention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be. limited in any manner except as 'set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
The door is sealed- Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
l. Acarton, formed of two blanks of foldable material one scored to provide a plurality of rectangular panels for forming the front, bottom, rear and top of the carton and the other blank being scored to provide the sides and inner bottom of the carton, all of said panels having tabs along certain of their edges adapted to be folded at right angles to the respective panels for reinforcing the corners of the carton, tongues formed on the free edgeof the frontand side forming panels of the carton and adapted to; interlock with the tabs; on the top form ingpanels, and a binder about the top of tle carton engaging-the sides and top there- 0 I 2. A carton formed of two blanks of foldable materia-l, one scored to provide a pluralityof rectangular panels for forming. the front, bottom, rearand top of the carton and. the other blank being scored to provide the sides and inner bottom of the carton, all of said panels having tabs along' certain of their edges adapted to -be-fold edat right angles to th'e- .respective panels for reinforcingthe corners of the carton, tongues formed on the free edge'of the front and. side forming panels of the carton andadapted to interlock,
with the tabs on the top forming panels, said 7 front. side having a door panel cut. therefrom and adapted'to be swung outwardly to permit access to the interiorof the carton. I r
'3. 'A carton formed of two blanks of fold V v able material, one scoredito' providea p111- r ality of rectangularpanels for forming the V front,.bottom, rear and top of the carton:
and theother blankbeing scored to provide the sidesand inner bottom of the carton, all of-said panels having tabs along certain oftheir edges adaptedto 'be folded at-right angles to the respective panels for reinforcingthe corners of the carton, tongues formed on thejfree vedgeofthe front and side form- 7 ing. panels of the carton and-adapted tov interlock with the tabs on the top" forming engagingthe sidesand top thereof, said front side having-a door-panel cut therefrom and adapted to be swung-outwardly topermit access to theinterior of the carton;
