Description

H. U. UPJUHN.
Feed-Cutting iiachines.
Patented Ma rch17,1874.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. g
HENRY U. UPJOHN, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEED-CUTTING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,633, dated March 17, 1874 application filed June 9,1873.
To all rwhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY U. UPJOHN, of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Cutting Feed, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in arranging the box or receiving portion of a feedcutting machine so an oscillating or swinging motion may be imparted to it for the purpose of feeding the machine, by connections with the cutting mechanism, in combination with a device for pressing and holding the feed while it is cut, and the box at the same time is returned ready with its next motion forward to carry with it feed, as before.
My invention is illustrated in detail in perspective view, Figure 2. The box A is suspended within a frame or fixed sides, b b, by means of four straps of thin iron or other metal, c c o o. Said straps are screwed at their upper ends to the inside upper edge of the fixed frame or sides b b, while their lower ends are screwed to the lower edge of the outside of the box A in such a manner as to permit afree backward and forward motion. This swinging or oscillating motion of box'A is derived from connections with the lever D, to which the heel of the knife is attached, through the connecting-rod E and right-angled lever ff. The device for holding and pressing thefeed consists of a follower, H, which is provided on its under surface with sharp-edged ribs of metal n, projecting down and forward, for the purpose of more securely holding the feed, and is connected by means of rods t' i with pedal K. Said pedal and follower are operated with the foot.
The swinging box A is shown more clearly in plan' view, Fig. 1, together with its relation to presser or follower H, and the front part of the bottom of the box shown, (shown at 171,) which is stationary. A sheet of metal, O, the edge of which is shown, is secured to the upper surface of the end of the bottom of the box,
A, vn'th its other end projecting and moving freely over the top of the fixed portion of the bottom m, by which means the opening made when the box A moves back is covered.
I claim as my invention- The feed-cutting machine, substantially as described, consisting of the swinging box for feeding within the main box or frame, and the mechanism for operating the same, with a device for pressing and holding the feed and the knife, as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY U. UPJOHN.
