BOX.
Application filed. October 4, 1921. Serial No. 505,236.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CROMWELL BLDIGKEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have made a new and useful Invention in Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to paper box conl0 struction, and has for its main objects the provision of a box of the type which can be made and shipped for use in knockdown form, which can be readily assembled and packed, and which is exceedingly cheap as compared with the solid pasteboard cartons now used as a container for a similar class of product, but which at the same time is suficiently substantial tor the purpose and presents substantially the same appearance 2o as the solid carton. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pasteboard carton or reinforcing forming at the inner portion of the box. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the carton after it has been placed in the fiat bottom bag constituting the outer portion of the box. Fig. 3 is a vertical section throu h the complete box as finally sealed up. nd Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the completed box.
The inner portion of the box comprises the pasteboard carton shown in Fig. 1, having the sides 1, 2, 3, 4:, and the closure flaps for the end, 5, 6, 7 and 8. This carton is stamped out of a single piece of pasteboard and made so that it folds up flat for shipping and storage purposes.
The outer portion of the box consists of the bag 9 as shown in Fig.2, such bag having a fiat bottom and being of such cross sectional size that the pasteboard carton may be slipped into it and fits snugly as indicated in Fig. 2. This bag may consist t of one or more layers, two layers often being employed as illustrated, either to give additional stren h or to rovide an inner layer of special materia such as waxed pa er, suitable for giving a more eflective sea g efiect and protecting the contents of the box.
In assembling the carton and bag the flaps at the bottom of the carton are folded in so as to form a closure for the lower end of the carton and secured in position either by pasting or other suitable means. After the bag and carton are assembled as indicated in Fig. 2, the material which the box is to contain is placed therein and the portion of the bag extending above the upper edge of the carton is folded over and pasted or otherwise secured in position as indicated at 10 in Fig. 4:, thus completing the package.
, The bag may be provided with any suitable descriptive or advertising matter and the completed box has every appearance of the solid pasteboard box heretofore used for a similar purpose. If it is desired that additional stillness be given to the carton, it may be provided at its upper end with closure flaps corresponding to those at the lower end, but in many cases this is not necessary, the bottom closure of the carton giving the necessary stillness to the box. The cost is, of course, less with the carton without the closure flaps at the upper end and the process of filling the box is simplified and made easier if the closure flaps at the upper end of the carton are omitted.
The advantages of the construction incident to its simplicity, cheapness and ease in handling will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, as well as the advantages of low cost and the saving in space incident to the knockdown character of the box as compared with the solid paper boxes of similar appearanceand strength.
What ll claim is:
l. A paper box comprising a folding ock down pasteboard carton having its side walls hinged together and having overlapping fiaps hinged to the side Walls and forming an end closure and stifi'ener for the carton when the sides of the carton are brought into position of use at right angles to each other, rectangular in cross section of greater length than the carton, into which the carton fits snugly with its closed end in opposition to the closed end of the bag, the other end of the bag being folded down and secured over the other end of the carton and the box being adapted to be filled after insertinlg'the carton into the bag.
2. paper box comprising a folding lmock down pasteboard carton having its side walls hinged together and having over and a flat bottomed bag Q meenee lapping flaps hinged to the side Walls and over the open end 01f the carton to form orming an end closure and stiflener for the closure thereof.
