To all whom it may concern:

I citizen of the United States, residing at Chappaqua, in the county of Vestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compartment Freight Cars, of which the following is a specification. I
The object of my invention is to provide a-carrier having means thereon adapted to hold a plurality of containers placed on the carrier against shifting and rocking while on the carrier.
My invention consists of the combination -of a carrier having a platform provided with bulkheads extending vertically therefrom, and a substantial distance above the platform, and means on the carrier positioned between the walls of two adjacent containers adapted to be manipulated to engage the containers and hold them against shifting and rocking.

The carrier is provided with a platform 1, and with bulkheads 2 extending a substantial distance above the platform 1. The bulkheads 2 are the side walls of the carrier, and the carrier is also provided with similar bulkheads, or walls, at each end thereof, as will be readily understood. Cams then are pivotally mounted on the side walls of the car, the shaft 7 of the cams passing through the side walls and connected to an operating handle 8, which operating handle is provided with a hasp 9 hinged thereto, which hasp is designed to engage with projection 10 on the side wall of the car, and secured thereto by means of the pin. 11, whereby the cams are secured against accidental displacement in their operative posi:

For purposes of illustrating my invention, I have shown the cams 6 as being elliptical in shape, but of course, it is understood that I any desired shape of cam may be used so long as the cam is of such construction that it will simultaneously engage the walls of two adjacent compartments or containers.
\Vhen in the position shown in the drawing, the'cam 6 engages the Wear on the containers 9, thereby hol ing the containers against shifting relative to each other, and against shifting and rocking on the platform of the carrier, and to assist the cam 6 in this function,-I provide the containers with guides 12 which engage the abutments 5 in the zone of the bottom of the container.
These guides 12 are provided with a bevel 13 on their lower end, which directs'the container, as it is being loaded on to the carrier, to one side of the abutment 5 as will be understood.
The containers are also provided with spacing elements 14, which engage the side walls of the carrier to overcome any tendency of the containers to shift transversely of the carrier.
In order to release thecontainers for removal from the carrier, it is only necessary to rock the cam. 6 by pulling the lever 8 downwardly to a vertical osition.
Changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a carrier having a platform. bulkheads extending vertically from said platform, containers-on said platform back of said bulkheads, of means pivotally mounted on oppositely disposed bulkheads, and in locked position extending from one to the other of juxta-positioned walls of two adjacent containers, thereby spacing the containers apart and holding them against shifting and rocking on the platform.
2. The combination with a carrier having a platform, bulkheads extending vertically from said platform, containers on said platform back of said bulkheads, of means pivotally mounted on oppositely disposed bulkheads, and in locked position extending from one to the other of juxta-positioned walls of two adjacent containers, thereby spacing the containers apart and holding them against shifting and rocking on the platform, and means outside the bulkheads for operating said spacing elements.
3. The combination with a carrier havlates 8? ing side and end walls extending a material distance above the platform of the carrier, and functioning as bulkheads for containers placed on the carrier, of cams pivotally mounted on the side walls of the carrier at intervals throughout the length of the carrier, and positioned within the carrier, means for operating each cam to engage adjacent walls of the two containers. 6, The combination with a carrier having side and end walls extending a material distance above the platform of the carrier and functioning as abutments for containers placed on the carrier, of cams positioned within the carrier and pivotally mounted on the side walls throughout the length of the wall, an operating handle secured to each cam to move the cam into engagement with adjacent walls of two containers to hold the tendingfrom side wall to side wall of the car, said walls and bulkheads functioning as abutments. for containers placed on the car, and means-pivotally mounted on the side walls and positioned vertically over the bulkheads and in lockedposition extending from one to the other of juxta-positioned walls of adjacent containers whereby the containers are spaced apart and held against shifting and rockingon the carrier.
8. The combination with a carrier hav ing a platform, abutments extending vertically from said platform, containers on said platform back of said abutments, shafts pivotally mounted on opposite abutinents and positioned between adjacent walls of two containers, and means on said shafts adapt.-
ed to engage juxta-positioned walls of-two adjacent containers, thereby spacing the containers apart and holding-them against shifting and rocking on the platform.
9. Thecombination with a carrier having a platform, abutments extending vertically from said platform, containers on said platform back of said abutments, shafts pivotally mounted on opposite abutments and positioned bet-ween adjacent walls of two containers, and means on said shafts adapted to engage juxta-positioned wallsof two adjacent containers, thereby spacing the containers apart and holding them against shifting and rocking on the platform, and means outside of the abutments for operat ing said shaftsand means.
