CLOSURE FASTENER FOR SHOES.

To all whom c'zf may concern.

Be it known that I, ALBERT (l. HANsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closure Fasteners for Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to footwear and has particular reference to improved means for fastening the closures of shoes.

AThe primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the above kind which embraces the desired qualities of simplicity, durability and efficiency in operation.

Another object of the invention is to provide means to enable the closures of shoes to be expeditiously and effectively fastened, and by means of which the neat appearance of the shoes is enhanced.

A further object of the invention is to permit yielding of the opposed portions of the shoe closures relative to each other so as to insure comfort to the user during the act of walking or the like.

Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing, and claimed.

In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several views:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a shoe equipped with a closure fastening means constructed in accordance with the present invention.

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional View, taken on the line 2 2 of Figure l, and

Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of one end of one of the fastening elements and adjacent parts, part of the elastic member of said element being removed for revealing other parts.

In the drawing, 5 indicates the forward portion of the shoe having closure flaps 6 adapted to be secured together for engaging the shoe upon the wearers foot in a neat and snug condition.

In accordance with the present invention,

the closure flaps 6 are held together by means of a plurality oftransverse fastening elements, each of which consists of an elastic member 7 having eye members 8 attached to the under sides thereof inwardly of the ends of the same and adapted for respective engagement with the hook members 9 suitably secured to opposedy portions of the flaps 6 as shown clearly in Figure 2. The elastic members 7 each consist of a piece of elastic tape folded as shown in Figure 2, into a three ply unit, so as to have the appearance of a bow and to present a yieldable member which is extremely durable and which will .yield during the walking operation while being sufficiently long to resist undue yieldlng.

By securing the eyelet or eye members 8 to the yieldable members 7 inwardly of the ends of the latter, the hooks and eyes are effectively covered when the device is operatively engaged with the flap 6 as shown in Figure l, thereby insuring a neat appearance of the shoe upon the foot of the wearer.

While the invention has been disclosed as applied to low shoes, it is apparent that it may be adapted to high shoes by simply increasing the number of fastening elements employed. Also, in order to insure against the elastic member 7 becoming out of shape or frayed, the ends of the same may be cemented to the adjacent portion, so as to hold the several plies thereof in proper position and relation.

A closure fastening means constructed in accordance with the above will be found to add to the comfort of the wearer and provide means whereby the fastening of the closure may be accomplished in a very eX- peditious manner. Unfastening of the closure may also be accomplished expeditiously and the structure is such as to be manufactured and placed upon shoes at a very reasonable cost.

Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim as new is:

1. In a closure fastener for shoes, an elastic member having eye members attached to the under sides thereof inwardly of the ends of the same, said elastic member embodying a piece of elastic tape folded to provide a unit having three plies to simulate the appearance of a fold.

2. In combination With a shoe closure embodying opposed closure flaps, hook members secured upon said flaps adjacent the edges thereof, and transverse elastic fastener members connecting said flaps, said elastic members having eye members attached to the under sides thereof inwardly of their ends and engaging the hooks.
