A F. A. HAGEL DISPENS ING SCQOP COUNTER Filed Dec. l. 1922 Q 1N VENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 1l, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK A. HAGEL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR F FOUR-TENTHS T0 WALTER H. DICKENHORST, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
DISPENSING-SCOOP COUNTER.
Application led December To all lwhom t may, concern.'
Be it known that I, F RAN-1i A. HAGEL,
a citizen of the United States, residin at Newark, in the county of Essex and tate I of New Jersey, yhave invented new and usefulr Improvements in Dispensing-Scoop Counters, of which the following is a specifica-tion.
4This invention relates to improvements in countinr and registering devices as applied to dispensing devices for foods, etc., the main object being to provide an efficient device by which the number of sales may be accurately and instantly seen.
Another purpose is to produce a device for attaining such results, in the form of an attachment readily applicable to existing dispensing apparatus and which in no manner inter `eres with their ordinary use.
These and other aims, such as simplicity, compactness and neatness of appearance, are accomplished by the novel construction, arrangement and combination of lparts hereinafter described and yshown in the accompanying drawing, rforming an essential part of this disclosure, and in which Fiffure 1 is an illustration of a conventiona type of ice cream dispensing scoop, showing the application of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of the same, taken in a different plane.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a similar sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is another like sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Figure G is a perspective view showing a detail of construction.
In the drawing the numeral designates a cup to dispense ice cream, the same being rigidly engaged at the end of a frame 11, said frame having an offset portion 12 terminating in opposed outstanding fianges 14 and 14 and fixed in a handle 15.
Pivotally attached to the frame element 12 is a lever 16 having an* extending actuating handle 17 and formed with a segmental rack 18, its teeth meshing with the teeth of a mutilated pinion 19 fixed on a rod 20, the lever 16 being normally pressed outwardly by a spring 13.
Said rod is journalled in the flange 14 at the handle end, and in another bearing 1, 1922. serial No. 604,130.
21 near the scoop, the rod being operatively engaged with an arcuate scraper 22 adapted to sweep the inner surface of the scoop 10 each time the lever is fully actuated, thereby freeing the contents of the scoop 50 and allowing the same to drop out when inverted.
In carrying out the invention, a counting register, generally designated by the numeral 23, consisting of a casing having a lug 24, is secured to the reduced portion 15 of the handle `adjacent the flanges 14e-14 by a clip 25 having inturned edges 25 and clamped by a bolt-26.
Formed with the clip is an outward lug 27 held by a screw 28 to the flange 14', these fastenings holding the register rigidly to the handle.
Said register is mainly cylindrical except at the display opening 29 through which the numerals appear at the center of the fiat frame 30. A cap 31 is removably engaged at the end of the casing and an axial spindle 32 projects slightly outward beyond a boss at the end adjacent the rod 20 and in alinement with it.
Fixed on the end of the spindle 32 is a disc 33 having oppositely disposed, outwardly extending lugs 34 and 34 arranged in parallel and rigidly secured in the adjacent slotted end of the rod 20 is an outstanding projection 35 disposed to make contact with the lugs 34 and 34 when the rod is turned relative to the spindle, in the manner of a clutch.
The spindle 32 extends through a stationary disc 36 fixed in the casing 23 near its outer end and has rigidly engaged upon it a lever 37 having its outer end turned to present a fork 38 carrying a screw 39 on which is pivotally mounted a dog 40 normally pressed outward by a spring 41.
A pawl 42 is pivoted on a screw 43 and pressed outward by a spring 44 held by the screw 45, both screws 43 and 45 being set in the plate 36.
An annulus or ring 46 fitting the casing shell, seated against the disc 36, is provided with means for actuating the outer or unit digit carrying roll or disc and is formed with teeth 47 on its inner circumference, forty in number being preferred and shown, these teeth being engaged by the dog 40 and pawl 42. n
In operation, the apparatus being grasped by the handle 15, the thumb makes contact with the lever 17 pressing it towards the frame 11 and, due to engagement of the rack 18 with the pinion 19, partially rotates the rod 20, actuating the scraper and relieving the cup or scoop of its contents.
At the same time the projection is rotated to make contact with the lug 34 in the manner of a clutch transmitting motion to the spindle 32 and causing the' lever 37 to carry the dog 4:0 back over four of the teeth 117 in the ring, which latter element is held by the detent pawl 42 from rotating backward.
Upon release of the lever 16 the same is returned to its initial position by the spring 13, the projection 85 making cont-act with the lug 34, nea-r the end of its action, turning t-he spindle and causing the dog to engage the teeth in the ring to advance it four teeth spaces and thus registering 1 on the counter.
Thus each full movement of the lever 16 is registered automatically and in such manner as to disclose the same to view.
It will be understood that the register is provided with the usual decimal accumulating devices and cannot be reset or tampered with, thus preventing fraudulent sales and accounting.
Although the device is here shown as attached to a specific form of dispensing apparatus, it will be apparent that the register can be adapted to other apparatus in which a part is either wholly or partially rotated and returned to its initial position, the number of teeth in the ring varying so as to produce proper registration of the numeral carrying rolls actuated by it.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without conflicting with the scope ot the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a dispensing apparatus, the combination with a handle, a partially rota-tive element carried thereby and a counting register having a spindle extending at one end, of a pair of opposed prongs projecting outwardly from said spindle, means car ried by said element adapted to engage said prongs near the limit of its movement to transmit a. partial rotary motion to said spindle, and means actuated by said spindle for advancing said counting register.
2. In an apparatus having an oscillatable element and a counting register, the combination with means for controlling the oscillations of said element, of a lateral projection carried by said element, clutch members carried by the spindle of said register engageable with said projection, a lever fixed on the opposite end of said register spindle, an internal gear in the register, a pawl pivoted on said lever engageable with the teeth of said gear when the spindle is moved in one direction, means for preventing said gear :trom retrograde movement, and means for transmitting the forward movement of said gear to the numeral carrying rolls of said register.
This specification signed and witnessed this 27th day of November, 1922.
