AUXILIARY DIR-IGIBLE HEADLIGHT B SPOTLIGHT.
Application filed March 7, 1922. Serial No. 541,653.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRED H. PAGE and DON P. SNooKs, citizens of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Dirigible Headlights'or Spotlights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in auxiliary dirigible headlights or spot lights. The objects of the invention are: First, to provide a convenient attachment and support for such dirigible headlight.
Second, to provide an improved construction or control which shall be readily applied and which shall not have slack joints.
Third, to provide an improved support for auxiliary headlight or spot light beneath the regular headlight and close to the ground.
Further objects and objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
The objects of the invention are accomplished by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly described and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of the invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a detail perspective view of the improved dirigible spotlight in position on a Ford automobile.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail perspective view of the structure detached.
Fig. III is an enlarged detail sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 11, showing the method of attaching the control rod to the cross rod of the automobile steering gear.
Fig. IV is a detail plan view of the structure shown double, providing for a lamp at each side of the car and under each headlight.
Fig. V is an enlarged detail sectional view on a line 5 of Figs. II and IV showing details of the pivotal support for the dirigible arm.
Fig. V1 is a detail perspective view of a slight modification in which a link rod is made use of in place of the jointed connecting link.
Fig. VII is a detail sectional view of a modification of the joint appearing in Fig.
V, which is simplified and a cotter-pin made use of for retaining the springs.
.In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the endsof thesection lines and similar numerals of. reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Considering the numbered parts of. the drawingi 1 is the frame of an. automobile. 2 is the attaching bracket of our improved dirigible light secured'to the corner thereof and having a laterally extending arm 3 disposed preferably directly underneath the headlight. 4 is an attaching bolt and 5 is the fender brace rod bolt which is removed and put through the bracket 2 to help retain it in position. 6 is the vertical pin on bracket arm 3 on which the dirigible headlight arm 8 is supported. This arm 8 has a rearwardly projecting part 9 which is connected by links 10 to the cross rod 17 between the steering knuckles of an automobile. This is connected to the arm 9 by the pivoted arm 11 which is connected by cross pivot 12 to the end of the link 10'. The opposite end of link 10 is connected to the bracket 16 by the pivoted connecting arm 14 having the vertical pivot 15 therethrough and the horizontal pivot'13 through the end of the link 10. This provides a completely flexible connection yielding in all directions between the bracket 16 and the arm 9 which compensates for all spring action. The slack is taken out ofthe joints effectively by the tension coiled spring 18 which is connected at 19 to the rear end of the arm 9 and to the bracket 16 at 20. Bracket 16 is clamped to the cross arm 17 by the clamping screw 16 as seen clearly in Fig. III.
The forwardly projecting portion of the lever 8 has a vertical pin 21 on which is disposed any suitable design of spotlight 22, the same being retained thereon by the clamping screw 23, see Fig. 11. The lever 8 is retained in place on the pin 6 by the nut 61 under which is disposed the spring 7 to hold the parts yieldingly together and yet permit them to swing readily without lost motion or rattle. V
The details of this connection appear distinctly in Fig. V. In Fig. VII a modifica tion is shown where in place of the nut 61 a cotter pin 62 is through the upper end of the pin 6. Where it is desired a pair of these auxiliary headlights or spotlights may be made use of and connected as shown in Fig. IV, the one at the right and left hand being identical except that they are symmetrical. One light on the right hand side is found to be very effective and sufiicient as most turns to the outside of the road occur to the right and it is desirable to know the condition of the road particularly to the right and by this means it is effectively accomplished. I
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is '1. The combination of a bracket adapted for connection to the front corner of the frame and having an arm disposed beneath the headlight of a vehicle, a lever pivotally mounted on said bracket, a spotlight supported at the forward end of said lever, an auxiliary bracket adapted for mounting on the cross rod of the steering gear of a vehlcle, a link with universal o1nt connectlons .to said auxiliary bracket and the rear end of said lever, and a'tension spring from said lever tosaid auxiliary bracket, coacting for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a bracket adapted for connection to the front corner of the frame and having an arm disposed beneath theheadlight of a motor vehicle, a pivoted lever on said bracket, a spotlight supported at the forward end of said lever, and a link connecting the rear end of said lever and a bracket carried by the cross rod of the steering gear of the vehicle.
In Witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seals.
FRED H. PAGE. DON P. SNOOKS.
