sarnrv DEVICE.
Application led .April 12, 1823, Serial No. 631,631. Renewed January 14e, 1924:.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. LIGHT- nUnN, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Gans, in the county of Fayette and State or Pennsylvania, have invented new Y and useful Improvements in Safety Devices,
or" which the following is a specication.
rl`his invention relates to a derailing dcvice, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the device is drawn along 'with the car and will be automatically caused to derail-the same when the car starts to move rearwardly or down an incline.
While the device is mainly designed or use in mines it will of course be understood. that it may be used in other situations.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claime.
ln describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the device attached to a car and slidably engaging a rail.
Figure 2 is a view showing how the device acts to cause the wheel to leave the rail.
Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view of the device.
Figure 4t is a side view. Y
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the device.
ln these views l indicates a base which has vertical flanges 2 at its iront end and at its rear end it is formed with a thickened part 3, the front edge or which is beveled, as at e, in such a manner that when the :i ange of the wheel strikes this beveled portion the wheel will be deiiected through the space 5 between'the ange 2 and said part 3. rll`he iront edge of the base is provided with a notch 6 for receiving the ilange of the wheel. Pins Z are carried by the sides oi the part 3 and the upper ends of the bars 8 are pivoted to these pins. 'lhese bars are designed to ride over the track, as
shown in Figure l, when the device is pulledV forwardly but it the car should start to slip back rearward movement of the device is prevented by the pointed ends 9 of these bars enteringthe road bed or engaging the ties. Pins l0 are carried by the ends of the member 3 and these pins are engaged by eyes formed in the vertical part ll o1 an attaching device l2, the horizontal part 13 of this device being adapted to be connected with a part of the car. Ribs 14: are formed on the bottom ot the device for engaging the rail.`
From the above it will be seen that when the device is attached to the rear end ot the last car of the train it will be pulled along the track, the bars 8 simply riding over the ties or roadbed as they are loosely connected at their upper ends with the device. if a cable should break or somethingv else happened that would cause the train to start to slide down the track the eyes in the attaching device l2 would leave the pins l0, thus freeing the device from the car and the lower ends of the bars would engage the roadbed or the ties so as to prevent movement of the device. 'lhus the wheel would ride up on the base and when it struck the inclined end of the member 3 it would be deflected through the space 5 and thus the car would be derailed. rlhe device can be made to throw the car to either the righiI or left hand side of the track. rlhis device will not interfere with the cable rollers and this device will derail the car soon aft-er it starts to run down the incline.
llt is thought trom the 'forego-ing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will bereadily apparent.
l desire it to be understood that l may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement o the several parts, provided vthat such changes tall within the scope ofthe appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A. derailing device comprising a base having a raised portion at its rear provided with an inclined front edge to dei-lect the wheel, means pivotally connected with the rear part of the device for riding over the track when the device is pulled forwardly but will engage a. track and stop the device when the same starts to move rearwardly and means for connecting the device to a car in such a manner that it will be dragged by the car but will become separated therefrom when the car starts to move rearwardly.
2. i derailing device comprising a base having a rais-ed portion at its rear provided With an inclined front edge to detlect'the Wheel, means pivotally connected with the rear part of the device for riding over the track when the device is pulled forwardly but will engage the track and stop the device When the same starts to move rearwardly, means for connecting the device to a car in such a manner that it will be dragged by the car but will become separated therefrom when th'epcar starts to move rearwardly, such means consisting oit" a pro'- jection Aon the `rear of p the device' and, anv at# taching member having an eyefor slipping over theprojection." j
LA derailing device of the class described comprisinga base, a railengaging groove: in the bottom thereof, anges atthe front ends of the sides of the base, a raised' part at the rear of the base having its front end inclined, a projection at the rearof the raised part, an attaching device having an eye therein for en aging the projection and a bar having its ront end pivoted to one side of the raised part so that its lower end will engage thetrack.
4:. A derailing device of the class described comprising a base, a rail engaging groove in the bottom thereof, iianges Vat the front ends of the sides of the base, a raised part at the rear of the beschaving its front end inclined, a .projection at the rear oi the raised part, an attachingv device having an Y eye Vtherein for engaging the projection, a
bar having its front end pivoted to one Vside of the raised part so that its lower end will engage the track, said base having a notch in its front endY for receiving the Wheel ange; j Y
