UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE O. l/IAIGHT, OF NEWARK, WISCONSIN.
f L IMPROVEMENT IN LAND-MARKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,449, dated March 10, 1874; application filed September 8, 1873.
To all whom it may 'concern Be it known that I, GEORGE C. HEIGHT, of Newark, in the county of Rock and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inWheeled Land- Marker; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompan ying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speeiication.
The nature or" my invention consists in the construction of a land-marker, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the carriage, showing the mode of attaching the marker 5 and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the landniarker.
The truck or carriage to which the landmarker is attached is the same as fullydescribed in my application for patent on wheeled plow, and hence I lay no claim to the same in this application.
Ais the axle of the truck or carriage; C, the wheels; D, the tongue, with the brace E. G G are the curved bars at the rear end of the tongue D, between which the foot-lever J is pivoted. K is the standard, extending upward from the tongue D through a longitudinal slot in the foot-lever, so that the same may be held rigid when desired.
The land-marker is constructed as follows: B represents a straight bar, having on its front side near each end a bar, B', pivoted to it, these side bars beingheld, when the marker is in use, in the same horizontal plane with the middle bar B, by means of stops a a.. When the marker is not in use, and in going to and from the iield, the side bars Bl B are thrown over inward, so as to be out of the way. Near each end of the middle bar B, aswell as at the outer end of each side bar B', on the under side, is secured a foot, H, the front side and lower end of which are lined or shod with metal. When the machine is in motion these metal-shod feet H H mark the land for planting. To the center of the middle bar B is secured a tongue or beam, L, having a clevis or chain, e, at its front end, by means of which it is at= tached to an iron or brace, f, extending downward from the tongue. The beam L is further connected with and supported by the tongue D by means of a stirrup, N. Another stirrup, O, connects the beam, a short distance in front of the bar B, with the rear end of the footlever J thus giving the driver full control over the machine. On top of the bealn L, in rear of the stirrup O, is pivoted ajointed bar, M, lwhich is, at its outer end, provided with a foot,'H. rlhis barand foot may be thrown to either side, and rest in a fork, d, upon the outer end ot' the side bar B. The object ofthe bar M, with its foot H', is for said foot to be kept in the last mark already made, thus forming a guide by which to drive and obviate the necessity of staking oft' the field.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination of the middle bar B with beam L, the pivoted side bars B B', stops a a, and metal-shod feet H-H, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set fort-h.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my h and this 19th day of August, 1873.
GEORGE O. HAIGHT.
