T 0 all whom it may concern:
provision of a simple and efficient campers grill so constructed and arranged that it may be used on rocky and uneven ground.
Another object of the invention is to provide a grill of this character so constructed that it may be telescoped with all parts thereof lying in the same plane to provide for economy of space in packing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a grill of this character having pivoted leg members and in which means is provided forpreventing undue extension of the leg members when in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grill of this character constructed of a heavy wire so disposed that theleg members and grill portions may be disposed in substantially the same plane without any parts projecting therefrom.
With these general objects in view and such others as will be apparent from the description, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the grill in. extended position; 7
Figure 2, an end elevation thereof;
Figure 3, atop plan view in extended positlon;
Figure 4:, a plan view illustrating the grill in retracted and folded position; and
Figure 5, an elevation of a modified form which the invention may take.
In detail, the invention comprises two substantially rectangular frames '1 and 2- formed preferably of a heavy galvanized wire. One of these frames, as illustrated in Figure 3, is slightly larger than the other to provide for a telescoping arrangement one upon the other. The larger of the two frames, designated as 2, is formed of a single wire bent upon itself at a central portion to provide an end 3, having a central inward bow, sides 4 and end pieces 5, the opposite sides and ends being substan- Application filed April 10, 1923. Serial No. 631,231.
tially parallel to the meeting portions of the wire comprising the end 5, being suit ably secured together to insure rigidity. Portions of the wire 2 comprising the end 5, which is the outer end of that particular section, are bowed sharply laterally of the frame, as at 6, to provide lips for a purpose hereinafter described. The frame 2 at the corners of the inner end 3 is provided with loops or convolutions 7 formed in the wire 2 to provide eyes through which the side members 8 of the frame 1 are slidable. The frame 1 is slightly smaller than the frame 2 to provide for a telescoping arrangement, and is substantially identical in construction as frame 2 except that its innerend 9 is provided at its center with an inwardly bowed portion 10 to provide a hand grip when the arms are in telescoping relation as illustrated in Figure 1. The outer end 11 of frame 1 is similar in arrangement to the end 5 of the. frame 2 and is provided. with exactly similar lips 12. At the inner corners. of the frame 1 the wire is formed with a double loop or convolution 13 to provide an eye slidable over the side members 4 of the frame 2. Arranged longitudinally across each frame and in suitable spaced relation to provide for telescoping are grill bars 14.
The leg members are each formed of a 1 single wire member 15 extending horizon-- tally across the adjacent frame end and looped upon its adjacent side members of the frame to provide the eyes 16 which engage over the frame arm in pivotal relation and abut the inner faces of each side 7 member, as best illustrated in Figure 3. The remainder of the wire comprising the leg members is extended laterally of the central portion from each eye 16, in parallel spaced relation, to provide the legs 17. The lips 6 of the frame 2 and 12 of the frame 1 extend laterally over each frame asufiicient distance so that they abut against and form stops to limit the downward travel of permitting the legs 17 to be folded inwardly with their ends disposed substantially on the opposite side of the grill, as illustratedin Figure 4, the arrangement and disposition of the legs being such that each leg 17 will, when in telescoped position, lie directly against the respective eyes whereby the convolutions of the wire forming the eyes provide for a nesting engagement of the legs with the frame, so that when'the grill is in telescoped relation all portions thereof will be disposed in substantially thesame plane, that is, the thickness of the grill will be no greater than the thickness of the respective eyes.
In the modified form illustrated in Figure 5, the legs 17 are provided below the grill member with inwardly bent portions 18 arranged to receive a supplemental grill shelf 19 on which may be mounted a tin of solid fuel designated at 20, whereby the grill may be used in places where camp fires are prohibited. V
In operation, it is assumed that the parts are in the position as illustrated in Figure 1 with the grill in extended position. When it is desired to dismount the grill for packing, the legs 17 are swung inwardly from the grill with their ends engaged by the upper faces of the end bars 3 and 9 of the respective arms. In order to accomplish this a slight telescoping movement of the frames must be imparted to insure the nest ing relation of the legs as described, and thereupon the frame sections may be forced. towards each other to telescope the grill, which will then assume the position illustrated in Figure lVhen it is desired to open the grill the respective end pieces may be grasped by reason of the hand clearance formed by the bowed construction of the end bar 9 of the frame 1 and the two sections brought apart to extend the frame in position. Subsequently the leg members, in view of their pivotal connection with the frame, may be swung outwardly to their limited control by the lips 6 and 12 and engaged in the ground as desired. 7
While I have illustrated and described certain details entering into the construction and operation of the invention, I desire it to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to these, but that any such may be nsedand any modifications made as will fall within the scope of the invention .as claimed.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising two slidable grill sections, each including a substantially rectangular shaped continuous wire frame,-eyes on the adjacent ends of said sections through which the sides are adapted to slide, substantially U-shaped wire leg members pivotally mounted in the outer ends of said sections with the base of the U disposed beneath the plane of each section, and means on the outer ends of the sections to limit the outward swing of the leg members.
2. A device of the character described comprising two grill sections formed of continuous wire frames, interconnected and adapted to slide one upon the other, substantially U-shaped wire leg members having theirbases pivotally connected with the outer ends of said sections, and means on the ends of said sections cooperating with the bases of the iJ-shaped leg members to limit the outward movement of the legs.
3. A device of the character described comprising two grill sections mounted one upon the other in mutual slidable relation, each of said sections being formed of a continuous wire strip, leg members pivoted over the outward end of each of said sections, bowed portions for ned in the wire composing each grill section and extendiuglaterally therefrom adjacent said leg members, and meanscarried by said leg members to abut said bowed portions in extended posi tion of the leg members whereby further outward movement of the leg members is prevented.
4. A device of the character described comprising two grill sections each formed of a single wire strip bent upon itself to provide eyes, said sections being arranged one upon the other for mutual slidable relation through said eyes, leg members pivoted on the outer ends of each of said sections and adapted to swing inwardly of the sections, stops carried. by the outer ends of each of the .said sections to limit the outward movement of the leg members, the inner end of. one of said sections being formed to provide a hand grip for extension of the grill.
5. A device of the character described comprising two grill sections formed of continuous wire frames interconnected and adapted .to slide one upon the other, substantially U-shaped wire leg members. hav-- ing their bases pivotally connected with the outer ends of said sections, cooperating means on the ends of the sections to limit the outward movement of the legs, lateral extensions on the upright portions of said leg members, and-a supplemental grill sup ported by said sections beneath the horizontal plane of the slidable grill sections.
In "testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
