SELF-SELI'NG POLE FOR STGR/AGE EATTER-'ES.
Application llled December it, 19M". Serial lilo. 522,62.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, WILLIAM A. MACKEN- zia a citizen of the United States, residing at -lJong Beach', in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful improvements, in Self-Sealing Poles for Storage Batteries, of which the-following is a specification. y My invention relates to storage batteries, and more particularly to the terminals thereof, the purpose of my invention lloeing the provision of a storage battery terminal by means of whiclthe eiective connecting and hermetical sealing of the cellcasingis accomplished to prevent in the latter instance the escape of electrolyte 'and the disadvantages arisipg therefrom. I will describe twoforms o battery terminals embodyingmy invention and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.'
In the accompanying drawings,v `Figure 1 is a view showing intop plan, a cell cover having applied theretoone crm of terminal vembodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view partly 1n Vertical section and partly in si e elevation showing the cell and terminals of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is -an enlarged detail view showing in top plan, the strap. connector and post comprised in the terminal shown in the preceding views.
Fig; 4 is a view showing the strap con nector and post in side elevation.
Fig. 5 is a detail view partly in section. showing the sleeve end of the cell connector comprised in the terminal embodying my invention.
, Fig. 6 is a top plan view of Fig.- 5. Y"
Fig. 7 is a 4vertical sectional view of a modified form'of terminal in applied position within a cell cover embodying my in 'vention I Similar reference characters refer to simi-i lar parts in each of the sc (veral views.
Referring speciicall to vthe drawings and particularly to i 2, I have here shown a conventional igorm of cell cover designated at K which as usual includes sockets l5 through which the strap connec tor posts are adapted to extend to a oint exteriorof the cover. The terminal torming the subject matter of my invention in this instance, comprises `a strap connector -brace a nut 26 adapted to threadedly post P Which includes a circular body porL tion 16 that has its. surface screw-threaded 4as is clearl shown in Fig. 2. At the upperi.
end of bo .y port'on 16 e. conical extension 17 is formed, t 1s extension and the body portionbeing formed of lead or other eutet able metal and cast in such :manner as to yiiredly secure therein the shank 18 of' a fastenin member F, lone end of which is provide with a head 19, While its o te .end is provided with. a screw-three ed'ex the p ug G is so shaped as to have a sn 7e l t within the socket l5, and through its threaded connection with the post Pee. to retain the latter within the socket` The conical extension i7 of the post? is ada t1' ed to lit within. the conical socket 23 o a w sleeve S, the latter being formed with a cell connector C. r
` As shown' in Fig; 5, the 'sleeveljlis in@v to provide an upper socket 2i which is also but arranecl reveee' of conical fome, relation to the socket 23. This socket Qa is adapted to receive a sealing collar 25 prei erably formed of lead and so cast as to em the threaded extension 20A` The niet 26 l@ @el formed with an annular groove adapted to receive a portionof the collar 25and'inf" such manner as to eect an interlocking et. the two. sclearly shown inFigs.. 2 and 5 the upper end of the socket'24 is provided: ai.' with an annular lip 27 which imatla 7 to be bent inwardly for the pur osso fre-1 taining a sealing plate 28 inover ying rela` tion to the nut 26' to seal the et'i.
ln the applied position of the aai 1 Within the socketpf the cell coveqtiie P. serves to sustain the strap 'aannemer 1n proper position in the cell, and a wat 29 embraces the at a point' between they lower .end' ofthe socket 15 d thefstrap connector, thereby providing a lid tight seal between these two elements. llith the` lug G in ap lied position it is adapted to Ee rmanent y retained therein by a prop- .e'ating ofthe sealing agent 22 so as to ne render it fluid, therefore when'q the agent sets it will provide a hermetic seal between the plug and socket 15.
When applying the cell connector, the socket 23 receives the conical extension 17 with a'gasket 3() interposed Ibetween the lower end of the sleeve and the body portion 16 of the post, -it being particularly noted that the upper side of the plug (1 is recessed to accommodate this ,gasket and is also formed at intervals viith notches 31 (Fig. l) to facilitate the rotation of the plug in appl 'ng the latter to the post. With the sleeve in position upon the post, the nut 26 together with the sealing collar 25 are now applied and after the nut has been screwed home to rmly clamp the sleeve against the gasket 30, the plate 28 is inserted into the socket 24 and the sealing lip 27 bent inwardly to secure the plate Within, the socket.
In order to prevent turning movement of the sleeve S With respect to the post P, a conical' extension 17 is prov ded with tapering recesses 31 in which are attached correspondingly shaped projections 32 the .latter being formed on the wall of the socket 23 which is clearly shown in Fig. 5.
Referring now to Fig. 7, I have here shown a. strap connecting post P including a conical body rtion 33, which is extended through the soc Vet 15 of the cover plate, and isprovided at its upper end with a tapered extension 34, the latter being of reduced diameter to provide a shoulder at the up r end of the body portion 33. A sealing p ug G is seated Within the socket 15 and is arranged in embracin position with relation to the body 23 of t e post P. This plug Gis also formed with an annular groove on its l.periphery adapted to receive a sealing agent 22 designed to permanently retain the plug Within the socket and provide a liquid tight seal between the tivo. The extension 34 is adapted to receive the sleeve Si" of the cell connection, and this sleeve in the present instance forms a conical bore.
The upper end of the sleeve is provided with a retention lip 36 adapted to be bentto retain a sealing pla-te 37 Within the sleeve and in spanning relation to the upper end of the here. As the post P" including the body and the extension 34 is formed of lead or other suitable metal, it will be clear that annealing yot the plug G and the sleeve S with the body 33 and the extension 34, respectively. can lbe readily efi'ected to permanently retain these elements in ixed relation to each other. This construction eliminates the necessity of threadedl associating the plug with the post and t e provision of the sealingv collar and nut las shownA and described in connection with the first form of terminal.
From the foregoing description taken in threa edly engagin conjunction with the accompanyin dreivings, it will be manifest that in bot i forms of battery terminals an edective connection for the strap and cell connector is provided, Wliile in addition thereto the terminals are so constructed as to permit of their being hermeticallysealed to prevent the escape of electrolyte from the cover. lnr the y parting from the spirit of the invention and v the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

4. A terminal for storage batteries comprisin a post including an extension, a plug the post and having a groove in its perip ery, a sealing agent in the groove, a gasket overlying the joint between theppost and plug, a sleeve fitted Aon the extenslon and engaging the gasket, means f r locking the sleeve against rotation on 'he extension` and means for lock-l ing the sleeve against removal from the extension.
