The present invention relates to impro-vements in machines for making metalarticles,
the particular embodiment, disclosed herein4 being adapted for the manufacture ofthe male portion of a snap fastener. An object of the invention is to provide a machine capable of quantity production, and in which the articles formed will be uniformly per- To this end, I prop ose 'to `provide improved forming means and further to provide an improved head shaping means to the end that the article formed will be free from ridges and when produced in quantities will be uniformly perfect and identical in shape. A still further'object is to provide improved feeding meansfor feeding the material from which the articles are made through the machine. f l
l.Vith these and other objects in view, an embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described -with reference thereto and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.

Referring more particularly to Figure 1 of the drawings, the machine comprises a bed plate 20 supported upon legs 20a and provided at .its rear side with acarn shaft 21, journaled in bearings 22 and 23 and adapted to be operated from any suitable A bevel gear 24 is provided at the end of the shaft 21j which meshes with and drives a bevel gear 25 provided upon the end of a cam shaft 26 dis posed at one -end of the bed plate and journaled in bearings 27 and 28and whichin turn" is provided at its other end with aY lievelgear 29 which meshes with and drives a bevel gear 30 `provided upon the end of a cam sha-ft 31 disposed at the forward side `of the bed plate 1 and journaled in bearingsl 32 and 33. These shafts 21,. 26 and 31 are simultaneously and equally driven.
The strip of material from which the articles are'formed and indicated'by the dot an'ddash line Figure 1, is fed intermittently across the machine by means hereinafter more fully referred to and is disposedl on edge, that is, it is in avertical plane at right anglesto the bedv plate 20. rlhe strip is iirst drawn through a stationary die head (Figs.)
3,6 and 7 consisting of a horizontal base 34 secured to the bedplate 20 by bolts 35 and provided at its forward edge with an upstanding face plate 36 rigidly supported at its'rear by reinforcing webs 37, the said plate being provided at its rear side and adjacent its upper end with an enlargement 38 having therein a plurality of spaced cylindrical pockets 39, in Vwhich are disposed a succession of head Vforming reducing` punch dies 40, adjustable by means of adjustment screws'41 disposed in the portion 38 bearing against the inner end of the dies and securely held by set screws 42 extend ing downwardly in the plate 36' and bearing upon the upper surfaces of the dies. The heads a upon the dies, are of gradually decreasing size as is usual in such metal shaping dies.V The strip of metal passes in front of the dives through a stripper comprising a plate 43 provided with a plurality of apertures 44, in which the projecting ends of the dies are slidably disposed, the said plate having atits front side a pair of spaced guide bars 45 and 46 secured thereto by screws 47,'the said bars being provided with opposed flanges 48 and 49 respectively having arcuate cut-outs 50 in ,register with the apertures 44 and which permit of the passage of the reciprocating f portion of the dies hereinafter more fully referred to. VThe strip of material is disposed in the slot formed by the bars 45 and 46. The stripper is mounted upon studs 51, andr is normallyrheld spaced from the plate 36 by springs 52 disposed on said studs vand having their ends respectively engaging the plate 36' and the plate 43, the latter plate being provided with sockets 53 in which the said springs are seated.
ln front of the stationary die head (Figs. 1 and 3), there is` disposed upon the bed plate, a block 54 having in its upper side a slot 55 dovetailed in cross section and in which there is mounted to reciprocate a slide 56 also of dovetailed cross section and engaged at one'side by a gib 57 adjustable by means of set screws 58. At the forward end of the slide 56 there is provided a head 59 upon which there is secured by means of a holding plate 60 a plurality of female dies 61 being disposed in passages 62 in the said plate, and held in place by being driven into the said passages, said dies being adapted upon forward reciprocation of the slideto enter the arcuate portions 50 of the stripper. The ldies 61 are provided with passages 63 provided with plungers 65 slidably engaging the reduced portion of the passages and flanged at theirv inner ends as at 66, the saidflanged ends Vlocated in the enlarged portion of the passages and being engaged by springs` 67 disposed in the said enlarged portion of the passages. As the slide is reciprocated forwardly, the dies 61 are engaged with themetal strip forcing the Y stripper toward the plate 36 and causing the heads 40aM to impressV the strip forming a plurality of heads or projections thereon,
the first die producing a relatively largehead from the flat strip, while the other dies gradually reduce this head to its finished shape as indicated in Figure 7 .Y As theV slide is reciprocated rearwardly, the stripper resumes its normal position removing the metal strips from the heads 40, while lthe spring pressed plungers 65 insure positive and immediate disengagement of the struck-- up heads from the passages of the dies 61 into which they have been forced, so that the strip is entirely free to be fed through Vthe machine. Y
Reciprocation is imparted tothe slide by means of an elbow lever 68, pivoted'V at 69 in a pocket 70 at the rear of the block VV54 and provided at the end of its short upl standing arm with a soclreted portion -71,
engaging a driving stud 72 adjustably disposed in a recess 73 of the slide, the said stud having a iiat portion 74 which engagesV the under side of the recessed portion of the slide and is provided with a threadedY shank 75 projecting upwardly through a longitudinal slot 76 in the slide, a nut 77 and washer 7 8 disposed upon theV shanlr lever 68 which ro'ects rearwardl and is inclined upwardly is provided at vits end with a roller 83 engaging the groove 84 of a cam 85 mounted upon the shaft 31.
At the side of the stationary die head,
there is secured by bolts 86, a block 87 hat ing at its upper end an open slot 88 through which the metal strip passes. ln the front side of the block, there are provided three holes 89 in which there are slidably mounted cutting punches 90 secured to the reciproeating head 59 by their flanged ends 91 and adapted upon forward reciprocation of the head to cooperate with a hardened die 92 set in a recess 93 of the block and provided Y with registering openings 94, to perforate the metal strip as indicatedV in Figure 15.
The particles removed 'therefrom `drop through an opening 95 provided in the block, toa suitable receptacle therefor.
In spaced relation to the cutting punches 90, there is provided on the head 59 a blanking out punch 96, tubular in shape and having its hanged end 97 held to. the head 59 by the plate 60. The said punch 96 projects through a passage v98 in the block 87 a-nd is adapted upon forward reciprocation of the head to cooperate with an apertured cutting die 99 disposed in a recess 100 of the block to blank out the piece of met-al destined to become the snap fastener part. A cylindrical passage 101 extends through the block being reduced in diameter relatively to the aperture. of the die 99, a drawing die 102 being provided in the recess 100 beneath'the die 99, the wall of the aperture thereof being of smaller diameter than the wall of the aperture of the die 99 and rounded at its edge adjacent the die 99.
A plunger rod or punch 103 ha-ving its forward end disposed in the tubular punch 96 extends through a passage 104 in the head 59 and into a passage 105 in the block 54 where it is coupled as at 106 to a driving rod 107 slidable in the said passage 105, its projecting rear end being provided with a rectangular bearing block 108, rotatable upon a transverse pin 109 and engaged by the forked upper end 110 of a lever 111 pivotally mounted at 112 in a bracket 113 secured to the bed plate, and provided intermediate itsV ends with a roller 114 engaging the cam groove 115 of a cam 116.
mounted upon the cam shaft 31. rlhe forward end of the rod 103 is provided with a socket 117' adapted to embrace the head formed in the metal strip, and as the piet-e of metal is blanked out of the strip as above pointed out, the plunger rod is projected forwardly, carrying the piece of metal into and through the passage 101, the tapered aperture of the plate 102, and reduced diameter of the said passage 101 causing an anY nular Aupturned rim to be formed thereon. By the continued movement of the plunger rod 103, the metal piece which is new in the form of a shell, is forced through the passage 101 and into an opening 118 in the end of a transfer arm or lever 119, the operation and function ofv which will be presently pointed out. In passing out of tac passage 101, the shell engages a mechanical stripper (Figures 4, 5, and 7) which prevents the same from being drawn back into the said passage by the return movement of the rod 103. Y
This mechanical stripper is disposed in a recess 1204 'at the rear side of theblock annularly surrounding the passage 101 and comprises a pair of opposed members 121 and 122 pivoted at 123 and 124 to holding plate 125 set in the recess, the outer periphery of the saidmembers being spaced from the sides of the recess 120, and grooved as at 126, the said groove being engaged by a split circular spring ring 127, the said mem bers being limited in their inward movement by engagement of their free ends. Segmental flanges128 and 129v are provided respectively on the members 121 .and 122 which have their inner sides concentric to and inwardly .ofthe wall of the passage 101 and are rounded as. at 130 adjacent the end of the said passage to provide guiding su:- faces for the shell. 'The holding )late 125, is secured in the recess by means o pins 131 and 132 disposed in the block 87 and engaging diametrically opposed recesses inthe periphery of the said plate. In operation, the movement of the shell from the passage 101 to the transfer arm will Vcause the members 121 and 122 toV open, allowingpassage of theshell therethrough and as the shell'v passes out of the stripper, the said members close upon the plunger rod, stripping the shell therefrom as the plunger is withdrawn, the shell remaining in the opening 118 of `the transfer arm; Y
Upon the bed plate 20, there isr secured by bolts 133, a supporting member 134 having an upright portion 135 supported at its rear side by a reinforcing rib 136 and provided with a projecting arm 137, having its under side spaced from thebed plate4 and extending behind the passage 101 of the block 87,V onearm 138 of the Atransfer lever being dis-l posed forwardly of the said projecting arm 137 and mounted upon a rock shaft 139 journaled in the said arm, the other arm 140 of the transfer lever being rearwardly of the arm 137 and also mounted upon the said rock shaft. The free end of the arm 140 is pivotally connected at; 141 to one end of a connecting rod or bar 142, the other end of which is pivotally connected to a lever 143 pivotallyv mounted at 144 upon a bracket ,145, secured to the bed plate, and provided intermediate its ends kwith a roller 146 engaging the cam groove 147 of a cam 148 mounted upon the shaft 26. As the cam 148 is rotated, the transfer lever ismoved from the position indicated in Figure 2 to a position substantially 9 o removed therefrom as indicated in Figures 6 and 8, carrying the shell disposed in the opening 118 from the first to the latter position. An adjustablev stop screw 149 disposed in a supporting plate 150 secured by screws 151 to the upper side of the arm 137, limits the upward movement of the transfer arm, While an adjustable stop screw 152 mounted in a supporting member 153 secured to the arm 137 by screws 154', limits the transfer` arm in its downward movement.
AIn alignment with the opening 119 fof the transfer arm in its lowered position (Fig-ure 8) and rearwardly of the arm 137 there are secured'upon the 'bed plate by screws 155 at each side of an opening 156 formed in the bed plate, bearings 157V and 158 having aligned lcylindrical bores or passages 159 therein in which is journaled a tubular spindle 160, provided at .its forward end'with a head- 161 between which and the forward Y end of the bearing'158 there are interposed chine.

This cam 1s so shaped that during a portion of one cycle of operation of the machine, it oper--i U 190 secured to the bed plate and provided at its rear end with a roller 191 engaging the` t cam groove 192 ofa cam 193 mounted upon the shaft 21. The function of thiscam is to reciprocate the sleeve 163 in the spindle 160. The passage through the spindle is slightly enlarged at its forward portion as at 194 and at its end is provided with Va flared portion 195 and within its enlarged portion the chuck sleeve is longitudinally trifurcated by means of slots 196, the yend thereof being flared both exteriorly and in- 'teriorly as 197 and provided with inwardly projecting annular toothed portions 198 thereby forming gripping jaws adapted to contract as the sleeve is drawn inwardly to engage vthe flared end thereof with the flared portion 195 of the spindle, the said jaws being normally expanded and providing an opening or mouth in register with and substantially corresponding in size to the opening 118 of the transfer arm.
Within the bore of the sleeve 163 there is provided an ejector rod 199,7its rearwardly projecting end extending into a socket 200- formed ina slide 201 mounted to reciprocate V At Aone side the slide 201 is provided side of the slidecand at its other end to an arm 211 secured to the bed plate. The forward end of the rod 199 is slightly convex and is provided with a socket 212 in which thereis disposed a plunger pin 213 slidable through a threaded bearing 214 screwed into 'the socket and engaged at its inner flanged end 215 by aspring 216, the end of the said sprino being normally projected as indicated in ii, 3;ure'9.
Forwardly of the transfer arm, there 1s vided with a longitudinal slideway 218 and having at its inner end an upstanding head.

The .transfer arin moves from the position indicated in lFigure 2, to 1theposition indicated .in` Figure 67 carrying Ithe shell into alignment with the rod 199 and the plunger 226, the slide blocks 221 and 24stY moving vtoward the transfer arm so that the die 228 and the plungerrod 226 are brought against the forward surface'of the transfer arm and at the same time the rod 199 moves toward theplunger 226 forcing the shell ,from the opening 118 of the transfer arm into the recess 250 of the ydie 228 thereby rolling over theV rim formed upon Athe shell and dishing the shellV as indicated inV Figure 9. The rods 199 and 226 remain in contact with the article being formed and simultaneously move rearwardly, carrying. the Yshell back through the opening 118 and into the end of the chuck sleeve 163 which at this point, starts to move rearwardly with the rod 199 Vso that the flared portion 197 thereof engages the liared end 195 of the spindle 160, causing the jaws of the Vchuck member to close upon the article 1 thereby'securely holding the same as shown in Figure V10, the rod 226 being thereupon withdrawn. rlhe head' formedV upon the aiticle lis now in alignment with the rollers l270 and 271, and the slide 254iL moves'inwardly so that the rollers engage overthe said head as indicated inv Figure 10, and simultaneously with this engagement, the spindle 166' together with the'chuck sleeve and theirod 199 are caused to spin first in one direction and then in the other by operation Yofthe segmental rack 167V and according to the amount ofp'ressure with rwhich the rollers 270 engage the head, a

The plunger pin 213 provided in the rod 199 insures removal of the article from the end of the said rod, as theV compression upon the article might from theadherence of Vgrease or other substance upon the same, cause it to stick to the endof the rod 199.
I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of my invention,b1it it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and Scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.r

A machine for making metal articles comprising feeding means adapted to draw the stockin the form of a strip through the' machine, means for operatingupon the strip vto form headsv upon tli'ef articles while stillV in the strip, punching means for cutting the articles out of the strip and having die means associated therewith for rolling the edges of the articles, other means for rshaping the articles 'and for spinning a reduced neck inwardly of the outerV end portions of the heads, and transfer means for moving the article from saidpunchiiig means to said last named means. In a machineof thecharacter described, means for feeding arstrip of material, means for cutting piecestherefromfor forming an article of manufacture from said strip, means for forming a head on said pieces before cutting of said pieces from said strip, means adapted to receive one of said pieces with said gliead, means adapted to revolve said last mentioned means, and 'means adaptedk to engage said head during said revolving to spin said head to a predetermined shape.`

A machine for making metal articlesV comprising feeding means for the stock strip, head forming means adapted to operate upon the strip before the articles are cut there-V from, slot punchingmeans also operating upon the articles while in the strip to cutL izo Yslots about the heads, punching means for'y cutting out the headed and slotted articles from the strip, a die associated with the Y punching means for simultaneously rolling an edge thereof, a transfer mechanism positioned to receive the article from said die means by action of the punching means, and other means for shaping' the article and vfor producing a reduced neck inwardly' of the head portion, said transfer mechanism adapted to convey the article from said punching means to said last named means.
6. In a machine of thc character described,
means for feeding a strip of material, means for forming a shell shaped article of manufacture therefrom comprising a stationary die head, a tubular blanking punch carried by said reciprocating die head adapted to cooperate with said blanking die to cut a piece of material from said strip, said stationary die head being provided with a reduced passage in axial alignment with said blanliing die, a drawing punch adapted to have independent reciprocatory movement relatively to said blanking punch and adapted to carry said piece of material blanked out by said blanking dies through said reduced passage to form a shell rim thereon, a pivoted transfer arm having to and fro movement, and provided with an opening disposed in axial alignment to said blanling and drawing means in one position, said drawing punch adapted to insert said article in said opening of said transfer arm, means for rolling over said rim formed upon said shell, said transfer arm adapted to carry said shell from said blanlring and drawing means into operf ative relation with said rim rolling means.V

In a machine ofv the character described, means for feeding a strip of material, means for forming a shell shaped article of manufacture therefrom comprising a stationary die head, -a tubular blanlring punch carried by said reciprocating die head adapted to cooperate with said blanking die to cut a piece of mate-rial from said strip, said stationary die head being provided with a reduced passage in axial alignment with said blanking die, a drawing punch adapted to have independent reciprocatory movement relatively to said blanking punch and adapted to carry said piece of material blanked out by said blanking dies through said reduced passage to form a shell rim thereon, a pivoted transfer arm having to and fro movement, and provided with an opening disposed in axial alignment to said blanking and drawing means in one position, said drawing punch adapted to insert said article in said opening of said transfer arm, means for performing a further operation upon said shell, stripper means in said passage of said drawing die adapted to permit passage of said shell therethrough into said transfer arm and adapted to prevent return movement of said shell upon withdrawal of said drawing punch, said transfer arm adapted to carry said shell from said blanlring. and drawing means into operative relation with said means for performing a further operation upon saidshell.

In a machine of the character described, means for feedinga strip of maf terial, means for forming a shell shaped article of manufacture therefrom comprisinga stationary die head, a tubular blanking punch carried by said reciprocating die head adapted to cooperate with said blanking die yto cut a piece'of material from said strip, said stationary die head being provided with a reduced passage in axial alignment with said b'lanking die, a drawingpunch adapted to have independent reciprocatory movement relatively' tosaid blanking punch and adapted to carry said piece of material bla-nked out by said blanking dies through f said reduced passage to form a shell rim thereon, a pivoted transfer arm having to and fro movement, and provided with an opening disposed in axial alignment to said hlanking and drawing means in one position, said drawing mnch adapted to insert. said article in said opening of said transfer arm, means for performing a further operation upon said shell, stripper means'in said passage of said drawing die comprising a pair of pivoted members .having their inner periphery projecting within said passage, said members Ibeing 'slidable outwardly to permit passage of said shell therethrough into said transfer arm and adapted to'prevent return movement of said shell upon withdrawal of said drawing punch, said transfer arm adapted to carry said shell from said blanking and drawing means into f operative relation with said means for performing a further-operation upon said shell.
9, In a machine of the character de# scribed, means for forming a shell shaped article having a head thereon, means adapted 'to receive said articlerto roll over said rim, means adapted to transfer vsaid article from said forming means to said rim rolling` means, means in axial alignment with said rim rolling means adapted to grip said article, means for revolving said gripping means, and means adapted to engage said head on said article during said revolving to spin said head'to a predetermined shape.

In a machine of the character described, means for forming a lat article of manufacture having a head thereon, means adapted to receive said article to give to the saine a predetermined non-flat shape, Vmeans adapted to transfer said article from said forming means to said last mentioned means, means in axial alignment with said last mentioned means adapted to ygrip said article, means for revolving said gripping means, and means adapted to engage said head oic said article during said revolving to spin said head to a predetermined shape.
