FAN.
i Application filed February 3, 1922. Serial No. 533,982.
To all 'whom z't may concer/IL:
Be it known that I. EDWIN F. BEUGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Bualo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fans` of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fan for propelling air and thus create either a suction or pressure according to the manner in which the same is used.
The objects of this invention are to poduce a fan of this character which is very simple, strong and compactv in construction and which yields a greater suction or pressure for the amount of power consumed than fans of similar capacity heretofore on the market. i
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a vertical transverse section of a fan embodying my improvements, the section being taken on line 1 1, Fig. 2. Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same taken along the driving shaft. Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the impeller blades.
Similar characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The case of the fan may be of any suitable construction that, for example, shown in the drawings, consisting of a circular body 10 having an eye or air inlet 11 on one side thereof at its axis and an outlet 12 arranged tangentially on the upper part of its periphery. Arranged axially within the fan case is the inner end of a longitudinal driving shaft 13 which has its outer part journaled in bearings 14, 15 formed on a bracket 16 which is secured to that side of the casing opposite to the air inlet thereof. Between the bearings the driving shaft is provided with a driving pulley 17 which receives a belt for operating the fan.
Upon the inner part of the shaft within the case is arranged the impeller whereby the air is drawn into the case through the inlet thereof and discharged therefrom through the outlet of the same.v In its preferred form this impeller comprises a hub of vcast metal and a plurality of blades of sheet metal radiating from said hub. The hub consists of a sleeve 18 secured by a set screw 19 or otherwise to the shaft within the fan case and is provided at that end thereof opposite the air inlet of the fan case with an annular ange 20. Each of the blades comprises a supporting plate 21 which is arranged parallel with the direction. of rotation of the impeller and a pressure plate 22 which proiects laterally from one longitudinal edge of` the supporting plate, preferably the rear one, in a directiony transversely of the case or parallel with the axis of the fan, so that each blade is L.- shaped in-cross section and forms in effect a scoop, the inner angle of which faces toward that side of the case having the air inlet. In the preferred construction the supporting plate of each blade is secured at its inner end by rivets 23 to the front `side of the flange of the hub. which faces toward the inlet of the case, and this plate is ofthe greatest width near its inner end and has the inner part 24 of its front edge inclined from the widest part of this plate to the inner end thereof at a distance from the rear edge of the same and has the outer part 25 of` its front edge inclined from said widest part to the outer end of the rear edge thereof. The pressure plate of each blade has a wide outer part and a tapering inner part, the outer part 26 of the free or lfront edge of the pressure plate companion supporting plate and the inner part 27 of this edge being inclined toward said supporting plate.
The several blades of the fan are mounted on the hub so that the pressure blades thereof are each arranged parallel with a radial line from the axis of the impeller and the inner ends of the supporting plates are nearer the inlet of the case while the outer ends of the same are arranged in a plate which is farther away from said inlet. The supporting plates of the several blades therefore together form substantially a cone` which flares or enlarges from the inlet side of the case toward the opposite side thereof and that wall 23 of the case containing the inlet is of corresponding conical form, as shown in Fig. 2. The several blades are preferably arranged at such an angle relatively to the hub that they are balanced` and not liable to be distorted under the action of the centrifugal force while being rotated, thereby avoiding unnecessary repairs.
By means of this construction the air is drawn into the fan case with a more powerful suction by the impeller and expelled therefrom through the outlet under a higher being parallel with the pressure. The L-shaped form of the blades also aids in increasing the capacity of the fan inasmuch as the air is confined thereon to a greater extent, instead of slipping oil, and thus render the operation of the blades more effective and enabling a higher air suction or pressure to be obtained for a given expenditure of power than has been obtainable from fans as heretofore constructed.
I claim as my invention:
LA fan comprising a casing having an axial inlet and a peripheral outlet, andarotary impeller arranged in said casing and having a plurality of radial blades each of which comprises a supporting plate arranged parallel With the direction of rota-k tion and a pressure plate projecting laterally from the rear edge of the supporting plate and arranged transversely to the direction of rotation, said supporting plate being adjacent to its inner end of greatest Width front edge portion inand having its inner clining from end of this plate at a distance from its rear Vedge and having the outer part of its ront edge portion inclining from said Widest part to the outer end of its rear edge, the
said Widest part to the inner iaegoe rear edge of said supporting plate and the inner part of its front edge converging in Wardly.
2. A fan comprising a casing having an axial inlet and a peripheral outlet, and a rotary iinpeller arranged in said casing and having a plurality of radial blades each of which comprises a supporting plate arranged parallel Iwith the direction of rotation and a pressure plate-projecting laterally from the rear edge of thesupporting plate and arranged transversely to the direction ofrotation, said supporting plate being of greatest Width adjacent to its inner end andihaving itsinner front .edge portion inclining :from said Widest part to the inner end of this plate, at a distance from its rear edge and having the outer part of its front edge portion inclining from said Widest part totheouter endv of its rear edge and each of said pressure plates having the outer part of its free or front longitudinal edge arranged parallel With the companion supporting plate and its inner part thereof inclinedtoWard said supporting plate.
