UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. BORDEN AD CLAUDIUS H. M. ROBERTS, OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY.
BOMB' BODY.
Application led June 27, 1922. Serial No. 571,223.
(FILED UNDER THE ACT F MARCH 3, 1883, 22 STAT. L., 625.)
Be it known that we, "ILLIAM A. BORDEN, major, Ordnance Department, United States Army, and CLAUDiUs H. M. ROBERTS, captain, Ordnance Department, United States Army, citizens of the United States, stationed at lVashington, District of Columbia, have invented an Improvement in a Bomb Body, of which the following is a specification.
The invention described herein may be v used by the Government, or any of its Ofticers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, O1' by any other person in the United States, without payment to us of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act of March 3, 1883.
The subject of this invention is a bomb and the invention relates more specifically to the construction of a bomb body. In the construction of a bomb body it is necessary that the body be so designed that it will assume a proper position during flight; that it possesses rigidity: that it is susceptible ofquantity production andthat the parts of the body may be easily and readily assembled.
The present invention has been devised to accomplish these desired result-s, specifically, by providing a body of drawn tubing to which the nose and base may be easily attached orwhich may be spun or swaged to form a nose.
lith these and other objects in view, which will hereinafter more fully appear, the invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the lscope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Practical embodiments of our invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a bomb constructed in accordance with our invention;
Fig. 2 .is an enlarged detailed View in longitudinal section of the nose and a fragment of the body;
Fig. 3-x }is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. et is a fragmentary view in side elevation, partly in section, of the base and tin assembly of the bomb;
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sections on the lines 5; 6-6; and 7-7, respectively of Fig. 4;
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of a moditied form of bomb body;
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary detail sectional view of the base and adapter;
Fig. 10 is a similar view of the structure for locking the base cap in place;
Fig. 11 is a sectional view of the carrying lug, showing a fragment of the body to which it is attached;
Fig. 12 is a view in elevation of the lug.
In carrying out our invention we prefer to provide a body 10 of drawn tubing, convenientlysteel, to the forward end of which is attached the nose piece 11. A desirable form of attachment, as herein shown, is provided by reducing the end of the nose piece, as indicated at 12, Fig. 2, so that the same may telescope within the forward end of the body 1() and the parts then connected together by welding as at 13, and further secured by rivets 14 passed through the telescoping portions which are drilled or other! wise apertured for that purpose.
The forward end of the nose piece is adapted to receive an adapter 15 to which a booster 16 may be connected and the forward end of which has connection with a bearing member 17 in which the fuse mechanism is journaled and which may be snpplied with eyes 18 for the reception of the end of a safety wire 18.
The rear end of the body 10 is closed by a base plug 19 which telescopes into the rear end of the body and which may be welded thereto as indicated at 20.
The base plug is preferably formed with a slightly tapered, rearwardly extending, annular flange 21 to provide a seat for a purpose hereinafter set forth, and it is also cent-rally apertured and tapped to receive an adapter 22 to the inner end of which may be connected a booster 23 and tO the outerend of which is connected a tubular rod 24.
The tubular rod acts as a. housing for the base fuse mechanism and has its outer end threaded to receive a nut 25 which engages the rear end of a base cap 26 the forward end of which cap embraces the tapered flange 21, to hold the cap firmly in place. The base cap has connected thereto the stabilizers or fins 27.
The base cap 26 is preferably made up of a single sheet rolled to form a cone and the meeting edges butt welded. Angle pieces 28 are connected by welding or riveting or both to the cap and between them the inner vedges of the stabilizers or fins are secured. When, as illustrated herein, the fins extend for a considerable distance to the rear of the base cap, such extending portions may be bound together by angle pieces 29 which are laced in the angles formed at adjoining e ges of adjacent fins and are securely bound together upon the fins by riveting. The fins may be further secured against exure or distortion by braces 30 which extend diagonally between adjacent fins to which they are connected in any suitable manner as by riveting.
For the purpose of hanging bombs from the carrier or rack of an aircraft, a lug or lugs 3l ma be provided. These lugs are to be attac ed to the body in the field and to provide a ready attachment of these lugsthe body is tapped as at 32 for the reception of studs` 33, having heads 34 formed with reduced necks 34. In order that undue strain may not be placed upon the parts when the lugs are attached, due to the use of too large a wrench or the like, the necks 34 are sufficiently reduced in thickness to cause them to shear when a strain in excess of that calculated is applied. The tapped apertures 32 may be conveniently closed at their inner ends by a plate 35 which is welded or otherwise secured to the interior face of the body thus protecting the explosive contained in the body from exposure.
The base fuse casing 36 may be properly located and held within the tube 24 by inea-ns of a tubular plug 37 which is forced into the rear end of the body and encircles the casing.
In the modified form shown in Fig. R, the body 10 is drawn to a tube and the forward end is spunv or swaged to form the nose 11 which is apertured at 38 and tapped for the reception of an adapter or closure plug. The base and fin assembly are assembled to this form of body as heretofore described in relation to the preferred form.
