Be it known that I, ALBERT R. GOLDRIOK,
a citizen or" the United States, residing at members have been used for obtaining the various combinations of lines incidentto the portrayal of the draftsmans ideas in the form of drawings.
To manufacture these various machines however, involves the use of devious production methods which necessarily increases the cost of the machines.
The general object of this invention therefore, is to provide a drafting machine hav ing a plurality of coacting members which are movable longitudinally and transversely of each other; the construction of the coacting means being suchthat a very simple, efficient and economical machine is obtained and which is adaptable to all classes of draftsmens work.
A more specific object is the provision of a machine wherein a blade, movable transversely of the board and having a suitable.
groove formed therein for the guidance of the coacting members may be properly maintained in position on the board by the usual parallel motion arrangement wherein sheaves and cords may be used to eifect the maintenance of the blade in relative parallelism with any preceding position from which it had been shifted.
A further object 'is the provision of grooved ruler blades having suitable means secured thereto for placing the rulers in coactive relation with the parallel motion ruler or with each other.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent from a description hereinafter set forth in connection with the accompanying drawings. The essential characteristics are summarized in the claims.

In the production of the device illustrated in the present drawings no expensive operations are involved as the instrument may be comprised substantially of the usual stretches of parallel motion cords 9 maintained in proper relation by a set of sheaves 10 attached to the-under side of the board adjacent the corners thereof. The ends of a longitudinal blade 11 may be attached to these oppositely disposed stretches of cords in any suitable manner. The longitudinal blade may have suitable graduations ll and 11 scored along its upper and lower beveled edges and a longitudinal groove 12 which may be formed parallel with the graduated edges of the blade.
A similar grooved ruler blade 13 may be maintained in slidable relation with the blade 11 by a slide head 14 consisting of a metallic stamping formed into suitable shape for the accurate maintenance of the angular relation between the two ruler blades irrespective of their relative positions on the board. The shape of the slide head however, is of such simple character that the rapid production thereof may be readily and economically obtained. The slide engaging parts of the slide head 14 be comprised of a pair of downwardly extending Ill-shaped portions i l" formed in alignment and at thesides of the protractor face 14 The U-shaped portions may be of sufficient length to maintain the blade 13 in proper relation to the longitudinal parallel motion blade 11, irrespective of the position to which it may be shifted.
I have provided adjustable connecting means between the ruler blade 13 and the slide head 14 comprised of a slotted member 15 having one end thereof bifurcated and secured to the lower end of the ruler blade 13, while the other end may have an elongated slot 15 formed therein to permit an adjustable movement of the ruler blade 13 inwardly or outwardly relative to the ruler blade 11.
Theclamping means; for securing the slide head to the ruler elements may be comprised of a small clamping member 16 arranged to saddle the slot in the member 15 as illustrated in Fig. 6 and a thumb nut 17 and pivot bolt 18; the thumb nut 17 and pivotbolt 18 serving to rigidly clamp together the slide head 1 1, the metal member 15 and the saddle member 16. The saddle member 16; may havea suitable pointer 16- formed integrally therewith which is adapted to register along the graduations 1 1 of the protractor when the ruler blade 13 is pivotallyshifted out of normal relation to the longitudinal ruler blade 11.
A third ruler blade 19 may be maintained in slidable relation with the ruler blade .13 by a slide head 20 having the same characteristic of construction as the slide head 1 1, the clamping means as well as the ruler adjusting means, may if desired be the same. This slide member is adapted to be moved along a groove 13 formed in the ruler blade 13' which extends longitudinally thereof. The blade 19 may be adjusted toward and away from the ruler blade 13 a well as angularly thereto and may be moved longitudinally of this blade while being maintained in parallel relation with the parallel ruler blade 11. The slot 13 may extend alongt-he ruler blade 13 to the ends thereof and be tween the bifurcated ends of the member 15 to permit a full travel of the slide head 20.
When making angular adjustments of the ruler blades 13 and 19, the ends 22 and 23 may be maintained in a zero scaling relation with the rulers 11 and 13 respectively by ad iusting the ruler blades 19 and 13 toward or away from their pivotal centers 24 and 25 respectively. The abutting ends of the ruler blades 13 and 19 are therefore tapered to come to the Zero points 22 and 23; thus one I levelededge of each ruler may be used uner all conditions and in all angular positions without resorting to the use of the other side of. the ruler. Hence, the beveling and graduating of only one side of the rulers is necessary; the other edges being beveled and graduated for convenience only.
Theforegoing described mechanism while comprised of the least number of parts necessary for the obtaining of an efficiently operable machine nevertheless includes all of the drafting means for obtaining a great variety of combinations of lines.
If it is desired to swing the parallel motion blade 11 into a position which is angular to the horizontal a further feature may be incorporated in the device which may be comprised of a parallel motion plate 26 upon which the parallel ruler 11 may be adjustably mounted. This metallic blade may be attached to the parallel motion cord stretches 9 by suitable clamping posts27 and 32.
The post 27 may terminate in an integral clamping portion 27 extending beneath the V edge of the board while a clamp bolt 27 may have a complementary clamping member 27 carried at the lower end thereof which is adapted to clamp the cord 9 upon the portion 27 when the thumb screw 2'7 is tightened. The post 32 may be constructed in a like manner. The post27 also serve as a pivot bearing for the parallel ruler'11 as well as a cord connecting means for the plate 26. while the post 32 may be clamped directly to the end of the plate 26. An arcuate protractor plate 31. may be rigidly secured to this end of the plate 26.
The ruler 11 may carry a. spring member 28 having suitable catch pin 29 rigidly carried thereby which is adapted to engage the protractor plate 31 in angularly spaced openings 30 formed therein. The openinsrs are formed in an offset portion 31 of this plate, the offset portion being adapted to ca gage the end of the parallel ruler 11 in a suitable arcuate slot 11. The ruler blade may thus besupported at the non-pivotal end when swung out of alignment with the plate 26. A suitable indicator 33 may be positioned at the slotted end of the ruler which is adapted to register along the graduations formed on the outer edge of the arcuate plate 31. The member 31 may extend upwardly and downwardly an equal distance from the center of the member 26; thus the ruler blade 11 may be angularly adjusted above and below the center line of the metallic parallel member 26 within certain angular limits.
From the foregoing description of my in vention it is readily apparent that I have provided a drafting instrument having a high degree of utility but which is of such construction that the constituent elements may be comprised. of parts having characteristics of simplicity which greatly enhances the economical production thereof.
It is to be understood furthermore, that the mechanism may be quite serviceable without the use of the later described means for angularly positioning the parallel motion member on the board. The arrange ment of the ruling edges is such that projected figures may be made from a central or main figure by adjusting the various ruler blade into the desired angular relation necessary to obtain the projection. Likewise, if it is desired to have the lower portion of the board clear from all instruments, the parallel. blade 1.1 may be shifted to the top of the board and the. blade 13 may then be used. in a position which is. opposite tothat illustrated in Fig. 1.
A particular. advantage is obtained in using this instrument in lay-out Work, as the beveled edges of the instrument blades may be used for sealing and measuring purposes as well as for-line drawing or ruling as it is always possible to adjust the zero ends of the graduated blades to positions immediately adjacent the measuring edges of the blades with which they are coactive.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a drawing board, sheaves disposed adjacent the corners thereof, an endless taut cord running on the sheaves with parallel stretches on opposite sides of the board and adapted to move in a common direction,-\ a grooved ruler blade having the ends thereof secured to said stretches, a pressed metal slide head having depending portions affording detachable engagement with said grooved ruler blade in said groove, a second grooved ruler blade secured to said head having a similarly .fOI'IllQd slide head engaged in the groove thereoi and a thir ruler blade connected to said second slide head. 7
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a drawing board having sheaves disposed adjacent the corners thereof, an endless taut cord running on the sheaves with parallel stretches disposed at the opposite sides of the board and movable in a common direction upon the movement of the cord, a ruler blade extending longitudinally of the board and having beveled and graduated edges, there being a longitudinal U-shaped groove in the upper portion thereof, means for securing said ruler blade to said parallel stretches of the cord, a second ruler blade movable longitudinally of said first ruler blade, and a quick detachable slide head provided with means for slidably connecting said second ruler blade to the first blade along said groove including means for permitting angular adjustment of the second blade relative to the first blade.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a drawing board, a grooved ruler blade movable transversely of the side edges of the board and having graduations along the edges thereof, a second ruler blade movable longitudinally of the board and slidably attached thereto, a reversible slide head including a protractor blade having downwardly extending U- shaped portions detachably engaging/ the first mentioned ruler blade along the groove thereof, the width of the slide head being less than the width of the grooved ruler blade whereby the graduated edges thereof are exposed, and means for pivotally connecting the second na ned ruler blade to said slide head including clamping means permitting a transverse adjustment of the, second named ruler blade relative to the first blade.
6. In a device of the character. described the combination of a drawing board, sheaves disposed adjacent the ends thereof, an end less cord running on the sheaves and having parallel stretches disposed at the opposite sides of the board, a blade extending longitudinallyiof the board and having the ends thereoi attached to said parallel stretches, a grooved ruler blade pivotally mounted on said first named blade, a plate rigidly carried by said first mentioned blade and asso ciated with the end oi the ruler blade whereby said ruler blade may be rigidly supported when swung out of alignment with said first mentioned blade.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a drawing board, sheaves disposed adjacent the corners thereof, an endless taut cord running on the sheaves and having parallel stretches disposed on oppoill) site sides of the board, a longitudinal blade aovable laterally of the boa means for securing the ends of said blade to said parallel stretches of the cord, a grooved ruler blade pivotally mounted on said first named blade, :1 second ruler blade movable longitudinally of the board, and a slide head engageable in the groove of said laterally movable ruler lnade adapted to connect said last nainet ruler blade With the first named blade.

In a device of the character described, the combination oi a drawing: board, sheaves disposed adjacent the corners thereof, an endless taut cord running on the sheaves and having parallel stretches disposed adjacent the opposite sides of the board, a laterally movable plate extending longitudinally of the board and attached to said, parallel stretches, a grooved ruler blade pivo'tally and adjustably mounted on said longitudinal plate and a second ruler blade movable longitudinally of the board, and slidably attached to the first named ruler blade by a slide head including a protractor plate having U shaped portions extending doWnwardly and adapted to slidably engage the groove of said first mentioned ruler blade and means for pivotally and extensibly connecting the second named ruler blade to said slide head; 7
9. in a device of the character described, the combination ot a drawing board, sheaves disposed adjacent the ends thereof, an endless cord rimming on the sheaves and having parallel stretches at the opposite sides of the board, a bladeextending longitudinally of the board having'the ends thereof attached to said parallel stretches of the cord, a ,I ooved ruler blade ph otally mounted on said first named blade. an arcuate protractor having openings formed therein at its major angular divisions and rigidly carried by said first mentioned blade and slidably associated with the end of the ruler blade and means carried by the ruler forengaging the protractor in said openings.
