UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN W. IRVIN, OF FRANKLIN, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-FIFTHS TO K. J. WAY, OF HASTINGS, NEBRASKA.
VALVE-IN-HEAJD MOTOR.
Application filed January v11, 1923. Serial No. 612,053.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. IRVIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Franklin, in the county of Franklin and State of Nebraska, have in all times; and with this object in View theinvention consists in a construction and. combination of parts of which a preferred :0 embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein F'gure 1 is a vertical sectional View of the contents of a motor having a construction embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view thereof.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of the rear end of the motor.
The cylinder head 10, valves having th stems 11 and seating springs 12 are of conventional construction.
Associated with the valve stems in operative relation thereto is a cam shaft 13 having the cams 14 for respective actuation of the valve stems to unseat the valves in timed relation with the operation of the cylinder pistons (not shown). Interposed between the camshaft and the valve stems are valve fingers 15 forming elements of rockers of which the lmuckles or heads 16 are mounted upon a pivot rod 17 extending longitudinally of the motor and are seated in an oil channel 18 also extending longitudinally of the motor and forme in the construction illustrated in an upward enlargement 19 0f the cylinder head.
The valve fingers are provided at their free ends with adjusting bolts 20 forming tappets for direct contact with the valve stems and are also provided in the paths of the cams 14 with cushioned contact elements 21 consisting preferably of rawhide inserts or pads aving a durable wearing quality and affording a noise eliminat- H10 contact for the cams.
urthermore extended longitudinally in overhead relation with the cam shaft is an oil feed tube 22 orificed at intervals as shown at 23 in the vertical planes of the cams so as to provide a drip of oil for eachcam'to be conveyed thereby to the surface with which it contacts. The feed tube may be supplied from any suitable source and by any preferred pressure device such as a pump (not shown) and at its rear end it is provided with a branch 24 discharging into the oil channel 18 in which the heads or knuckles of the valve fingers are seated. This'oil channel being extended-to the front end of the motor to insure a supply of oil. to the rockers throughout the series, discharges into the crank case through the guard 25 which is provided for the chain 26 by which motion is communicated from the crank shaft to the cam shaft. While this is a suitable preferred method of completing the circulation of the oil to the end that there may be no waste thereof while insuring a s upply to the essential parts of the valve operating mechanism, it will be understood that modifications of this arrangement may be adopted to suit difi'ere'nt types of motors provided the principle of circulation to insure the deposit of the surplus oil in the crank case is observed to the end that there may be no excessive and unnecessary expenditure of oil due to the continuous supply thereof to the elements of the valve mechanism.
The overhead cam shaft rockers and related devices including the valve stems and their spouts, are preferably arranged within a housing 27 surmounting the cylinder head and interiorly accessible by means of a removable cap plate 28.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A valve-in-head motor having an over- 100 head valve actuating cam shaft, rockers provided with fingers interposed between the valve stems and the cams on the cam shaft, means for operating said cam shaft, and cushioned contact elements consisting 1 of pads having a durable wearing quality inset in the rockers and afiording noise eliminating contact for the cams.
2. A valve-in-headmotor having an overhead valve actuating cam shaft, rockers provided with valve fingers interposed between the valve stems and the cams of the cam shaft, means for operating said cam shaft, an oil channel extending longitudinally of the motor and cross sectionally conforming to the rockers, means for pivotally mounting the rockers concentric with the channel, and means for supplying lubricant to the channel.
3. A valve-in-head motor having an overhead valve actuating cam shaft, rockers having valve fingers interposed between the valve stems and the cams of the cam shaft, means for operating said shaft and an orificed oil feed tube arranged in overhead relation with the cam shaft, the rockers being mounted in a continuous oil channel in communication with said oil feed tube.
4. A valve-in-head motor having an overhead valve actuating cam shaft, rockers having valve fingers interposed between the valve stems and the cams of the cam shaft, means for operating said shaft and an orificed oil feed tube arranged in overhead relation with the cam shaft, the rockers being mounted in a continuous oil channel in communication with said oil feed tube and disposed to discharge into the crank case.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
JOHN W. IRVIN.
