Description
Y 1,481,906 A. J. JACKSON MAGNETIC SHIPBUILDING DEVICE Filed April 14, 1925 Patented Jan. 29, 1924:
ARGHIBALID JOHN Jackson, or ron'r OGDEN, FLORIDA.
' MAGNETIC SHIPBUILDING DEVICE.
. Application filed April 14, 1923. Serial No. 632,168.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD JOHN JAcKsoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residin at Fort Ogden, in the county of De oto and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magnetic Shipbuilding De. vices, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates generally to ship construction, having particular reference to the securing of the hull lates on the ribs or framework, the invention having for an object the provision of magnetic means for us: in holding the plates in position on the ri s.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing,
and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a fragmentary side view of the hull of a ship, indicating the means whereby the plates are held on the frame according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the magnetic plate holding device showing it engaged with one of the ribs of the ship.
Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof, showing the rib in horizontal section.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the hull of a ship with parts broken away to show the ribs.
In the drawing I have indicated generally by the reference numeral 10 the steel plates of the hull of a ship, while 11 indicates the ribs of the ship. to which such plates are secured. I preferably make use of magnetic.
means in conjunction with the usual rivets for holding the plates to the ribs. This might be done by magnetizing the parts so that they would hold together without shakin or vibration.
preferably utilize however, the novel device illustrated in detail in Figs. 2 and 3 and which comprises an elongated rectangular plate 14 of insulating material .which serves as a base for the device. Mounted on the forward side of this plate are several electro-magnets 15, as here shown four, arranged in pairs, one pair near each end of the plate, while the respective magnets of each pair are laterally spaced from one another to straddle the web of the T- shap'ed' rib 11. The device is adapted .to be firmly clamped to the rib with the magnets 15 pressed against thecross element of the latter by pairs of gripper jaws in "the general form of bell crankleverseach having a'short arm 18 which forms the jaw proper,
and a long arm 19 which formsthe handle.
These jaws are pivoted to the free ends of links 20 pivoted at their other ends to the base as at 21, and the respective jaws of each pair are dis sed on opposite sides of the web of the rib 11, the jaw arms 18 projecting toward one another from the links 20 and having sharpened ends which are adapted to bite the sides of said web.
To operate the jaws I provide a pair of solenoids 25 which are fixed one near each end of the base 14 and to the rear face thereof, with their axes transverse to the base. Pivotally connected to the outer ends of the plungers 26 of these solenoids are pairs of rigid links 27 which are attached at' one end to the said plungers, and at their opposite ends to the operating arms or handles 19 of the jaws. Surrounding the plunger 26 of each solenoid is a coiled expansion spring 28 which urges the plunger outwardly, or in a direction to release the jaws. The base 14 may have a suspension eye 30 fixed to one,
end thereof, whereby it may be attached to a chain or the like. Formed in the base toward opposite sides thereof, are the longitudinally extending slots 31 which permit of access to the heads of the rivets, indicated- I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A plate holding means for the hulls of ships comprising magnets, a base on which said magnets are mounted, and gripper jaws on said base adapted to grip the ribs of the ship to hold the device in position thereon.
2. A device of the type described comprising a base, a pair of swinging gripper jaws mounted on said base and adapted to engage opposite sides of a part to be gripped, links hinged at one end to said base and carrying the said gripper jaws on their free ends and abutment members for the free ends of said links adjustable toward and away from one another, for the purpose specified.
3. A device of the type described comprising a base, a pair of gripper jaws, and adapted to engage opposite sides of a partto be gripped, and a solenoid for operating said jaws, links hinged to said base and having said jaws hingedly mounted in turn thereon, and means for adjusting said links to be gripped, and a solenoid for operating a said jaws, links hinged to said base and having said jaws hinged in turn thereto, and means for adjusting said links toward and away from one another, for the purpose specified, including springs pressing said links against abutment screws.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
ARCHIBALD JOHN JACKSON.
