U NET REESE E. WEAVER, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK IllI. AVER, DE LOS ANGHES, CIFORNIA.
GAS BURNER.
Application filed June 22, 1922. Serial Nd. 570,189.
To all whom it may coowem:
Be it known that I, Races Enemrr WEAVER. a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burners and has for its object to provide a burner readily adaptable for the burning of either liquid fuel or gaseous fuel. Another object is to provide a gas burner having means for regulating the mixture of gas and air. Another object is to provide a burner having means for preventing sudden drafts of air from passing into the mixin chamber with such velocity as to extinguis the flame of combustion.
Other objects will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a central, longitudinal section of the improved burner.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the regulating cap.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cap.
The preferred embodiment of the invention consists of a substantial body or shell 2, which may be of any suitable material and dimensions and is preferably of cylindrical form. The rear end of thebody is provided with a flange 3, to which is attached, as by threads 4 a nipple or burner tip 5, the rear end of which is provided with a as outlet 6.
he forward end of the burner shell 2 has a transverse wall or head 7, with a series of air inlets 8. Threaded in the head Tie a gas pipe 10, which projects through the shell 2. well into the burner nipple 5, so that gas discharging from the gas pipe 10 is mixed with the air in the nipple 5 to form a good combustible mixture at the outlet of the tip.
The pipe 10 is shown as connected .to a fitting 11, to one side of which is attached an oil supply pipe 12 and to the opposite side of which fitting there is attached a gas supply pipe 13. The pipes 12 and 13 are provided with suitable valves 14 for cutting ofl the flow of fluid to the burner pipe 10.
For the purpose of preventing the sudden inflow of air through the air ports 8 with such velocity as to put out the flame I have provided a guard or shield over theinlet head 7 of the shell. Such shield is here shown as in the form of a cap 15 in the form of a cylinder having a flange 16 slidabl fitting the shell so that the cap can be turned on the threaded part of the gas pipe 10 to and from the air inlets 8. The cap 15 has a senes of air inlet ports 17 arranged in its cylindrical portion, which overlaps the shell 2. Therefore, air passing in through the ports 17 must traverse a circuitous path in reaching the air ports 8. This, it will be seen, prevents a strong indraft into the burner shell.
The cap 15 further provides for the regulation of air flowing into the air ports by virtue of its adjustment toward and from the ports.
The present burner is adapted for the burning of gas fuel from the pipe 13, and it is also adapted for the burning of oil fuel from the pipe 12. In the latter case the gas pipe valve is closed and the oil pipe valve is opened.
For atomizing the oil means are provided for admitting a gaseous fluid under pressure into the shell 2. Such means comprises, for instance, a steam pipe 18, having a valve 19, the pipe being threaded into the side wall of the shell 2. Therefore, when oil is turned into the fuel pipe 10, it will discharge from the end thereof into the mixing nipple 5 and steam will be turned into the shell from the steam pipe 18 and the steam and oil, will be intermixed in the nipple 5 and discharged as a readily combustible mixture at the tip aperture 6. a To facilitate. adjustment of the cap 15 it'may be provided with suitable purchase means as radial lugs 15'.-,
Various modifications mayfibe resorted to withinthe scope of the claims.
ing chamber, means for supplying fuel to sald pipe,'an air regulating means arrangedat one end of the chamber and constructed and disposed so as to provide for the admis- 5 sion of air to the mixing chamber and to prevent inrush of air and the extinction of the flame, the said means including a permew/ea forated end head for the shell and .a shield arranged to form a deflector for air currents and having a perforated sleeve portion adjustable on and spaced from the chamber.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
l REESE E. WEAVER.
