CURTAIN-reorncriive nnvIcE.y Y
Application filed August 23, 1922. I Serial No. 583,776.
To all whom s may concern:
' Be it known that I, AUGUST E. Maven,` a citizen of the United States, residing-atv Dixon, in the county ot'Lee and State of Illinois, have' invented a new and useful mprovement 1n Curtain-Protecting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in curtain protecting devices and more vespecially to a device adapted to bearranged within a window frame in order to prevent curtains or other window hangings or draperies from blowing or otherwise-coming into contactwith a window screen. The device also prevents the curtain or other draperies from blowing out through the open window, thus preventing soiling or damaging from rain or other outside inluences.
In that form of device embodying the features of my invention, shown in the aocompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in `front elevation, showing my improved curtain protector device in place in a window, and Fig. 2 is a View taken as indicated by the line 2 of Fig. 1'.
As shownin the drawings, the device comprises two vertical 'members 10 adapted to be placed within the window 'frameunder the sash as shown in Fig. 1. The vertical members 10 are joined by adjustable hori zontal members 12 and 13.
By. means of adjustment of the members 12 and 13, the width of the device can be varied in order to accommodate it to window frames of different widths. This adH justment is procured in the following manner. The member 12Y at its end carries two wire loops 14, through which the member 13 extends. The member 13 is provided at its end with a spiral wire spring 17 encircling the member 12. The end of the spring 17 is bent toward the member 12 to form a pin 20 adapted to be inserted in any one of a series of holes 22 formed inV the member 12. It will be seen that by removing the pin 20, the members 12 and 13 may be slid on each other to adjust the vertical members 10 to the desired width, and then the pin 2O is inserted in the proper hole 22 to retain the adjustment. The spring 17 furnishes a certain amount of yielding movement between the members 12 and 13,
vso that after the proper adjust-ment has been obtained, the vertical'members 10 may be pushed toward each other a short distance against the tension of the spring 17, So that they may be placed in the window -frame and then released. 1When so released, the spring 17 separates them a short distance to force the members 10 into the slides inr which 4 the window sash 50 operates. The sash 5() is then lowered until it rests on the upper ends of the members 10.
Each of the members 10 is provided with a series of holes 60, each having aslot adjoining it with the edge of the member 10. A str-ing or suitable cord S0 is thenY laced through the holes as shown. lThe members 12 and 13 are also provided on their inner faces with a series of slanting slots V93. In lacing the cord 8O through the device, at the center, it is looped, as indicated by 94, through one of the slots 93 in order to give the cord the right tension. Since there are several slots 93 in the members 12 .and 13, as shown, the loop 94C may be pulled up to the desired slot 93 in order to take up any slack in the string 80 which there might be, -due to the adjustment of the vertical members 10y toward each other to t narrower windows.
It will be seen that the cord 80 forms a understood that it iscapable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, intheconstruction and arrangement may bemade Vwithout departing from the spirit and scope ot the invention as disclosed in the vappended claims, in which itk is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my' inven- Y tion as broadly as possible in view of the prior art. Y Y l What l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a pair of vertical members, having means for lacing a string thereon to form a grating between said members, andV adjusting means joining said members .and comprising two horizontally arranged yoverlapped members, with means for yieldingl-y Y holding them in various adjustments and means for taking up the slack in the string caused by the adjustment of the vertical members toward each other.
2. A device of the character described comprising a pair of vertical members, having means for lacing string thereon to 'form a grating between said members, and adjusting means joining said members and comprising two horizontally arranged 'overlapped members, with means for yieldingly holding them in various adjustments and means on said adjusting means for taking up the slack in the string caused by the adjustment of the vertical members toward each other.
3. A device of the character described comprising a pair of vertical members, having means for lacing a stringI thereon to form a grating between said members, adjusting means joining said members and comprising two horizontally-arranged overlapped membens, means for 'lrolding the overlapped members in various adjustments, said means comprising a pin mounted on a spring attached to one of the members and adapted to engage in one of a series of holes in the other member, and means for taking up the slack in the `string caused by the adjustment of the vertical members toward each other.
4. A device of the character described comprising a pair of vertical members, having means for lacingI a string thereon to form a rgrating between said members, adjusting means joining said members and comprising two horizontally-arranged overlapped members, means for holding the overlapped members in various adjustments, said means comprising a pin mounted on a spring attached to one of the members and adapted to engage in one of a seriesk of holes in the other member, and means for taking up the slack in the string caused by the adjustment of the vertical members toward each other', said means including a series of slanting slots in one of the horizontal members adapted to engage a loop of the string forming` the grating between the vertical members.
l/Vitness` my hand and seal this 19th day of August 1922.
