Be it known that I, STANTON W. FoRsMAN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Los Angeles, county of Los 5 Angeles, State of California, have invented.
a new and useful Barrel Construction, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containers and more particularly to paper barrels havingat each end a croze ring telescoping over the edge of the end.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a barrel construction in which there is used a metallic or other croze ring of channel-shaped cross section and which is split; the ring being constructed and designed so as to form a substantially sift or leak proof joint at the meeting ends of the mug.
It is further, an object of the invention to provide a croze ring of channel-shaped cross section which has its ends designed to overlap and telescope into each other, therefore avoiding the tendency of the ends of the ring or hoop from projecting and forming an undesirable roughness at the hoop joint.
Further, it is an object of the invention to provide for the eflicient fastening of the ends of the barrel croze ring or hoop through the medium of a. single securing device, as a nail, adapted to be passed through the overlapping inner and outer portions of the hoop and so preventing both transverse and peripheral slipping of the connected ends of the ring.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide, in a hoop or croze ring having inwardly projecting circumferential or annular bead or flange like portions, a. mortising or interlocking of the contiguous ends of the split ring.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which with the foregoing, will be made manifest in the following description of the preferred form of the invention, which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that it is not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment shown by the said drawings and description, as variations may be adopted within the scope of .the invention as set forth in the claims.

The, present invention pertains to barrel structures more particularly of the type having a tubular body of heavy laminated material, such as cardboard, andeach end of which is covered by a protecting croze ring or hoop of channel shape in cross'section; the outer leg of the channel embracing the outersurface of the end of the barrel and the inner leg of'the channel embracing the inner surface and being provided with inwardly projecting and laterally spaced beads, flanges or other equivaient means forming the croze seat to take the inserted head of the barrel.
One form of such barrel construction 1s here shown as embodying the cylindrical paper barrel body 2, and a complementary head 3, which may be of paper or other suitable material, and is designed to be retained in its respective end of the barrel by a croze ring and binding hoop consisting, preferably, of a split ring structure. In the illustrated form the ring is shown as of one integral piece, although it is to be understood that other structural forms may be adopted and still embody the principle of the invention.
The improved croze ring has an outer overlapping peripheral flange 4, and an end covering and connecting portion 5, from which extends downwardly an inner flange or leg portion 6. The lowermost edge of the in-- nor leg portion of the channel-like section thus provided, has an inwardly turned flange 7 forming the lower portion of a croze seat for the head 3. The flange or leg portion 6, is shown as provided somewhat below the connecting part 5, of the hoop or ring with an inwardly projecting bead or rib 8, the lower surface of which, opposed to the flange or seat 7, co-operates therewith to retain the inserted head 3.
For securing a substantially leak or sift proof oint between the ends of the hoop or ring, one of these ring ends is suitably expanded and deformed so that two ends of the ring may be telescoped one in the other and thus forming a substantial overlapping; joint, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To further facilitate the telescoping of the end, they are constructed and designed so that there is a relative mortising of one portion into the other. as well as the telescoping of the ring ends. Such a inortising joint is here secured by cutting; away the end portion of the upper croze seat 8, corninencingat the transverse edge of the ring end and extending inwardly a suitable distance. as is clearly shown at 9, in Figs. 2 and 3. In the present case, it is the female end of the ring that is mortised or s lotted to receive the opposite end 10, which may, therefore, be of its normal transverse sectional contour. since the slotted end of the ring or hoop is, as above stated, soznewhat slightly expanded where it is designed to overlap the inwardly extended end 1O.v
This overlapping and 'rnortis'ing' of the contiguous ends of the hoop or ringr'serves, therefore, not only to provide a tight joint, as between the endsof the ring, but further provides, through the overlapping portions, for the application of a fastening nail 11, or
other device Which will pass through the outer overlapping flange portions and the inner overlapping flange or leg; portions (3; the nail or fastening device being driven preferably through the portion of the ring which forms the seat for the head 3, so that the nail will enter the head radially tl'irough its edge.
What is claimed is:
1. A Split croze ring oi channel form in cross section to fit down over the end of a barrel. and having inwardly extending spaced shoulders to receive a head, the ends of the ring beingtelescopic. and one end being slotted to receive a part of the other end.
2. A split croze ring of channel form in cross section to fit down over the end of a barrel and having: inwardly extending spaced shoulders to receive a head; the ends of the ring being; telescopic and one end having a part of one'o'f its shoulders cut away so as to form a slot to receive the coordinate shoulder of the other end.
