' ti it Application filed April 26, 195352. herial No. 556,757.
. To all "a a have it may concern.
Be it known that l, .ttoivzo Evnnnrr DARBY, a citizen oi: the United Estates of America, "and a resident oft llialreside, in the county o t Chelan and State of Wash ington, have invented a new and improved Filing for Containers, of which the following is a description.
My invention. relates to a sling more particularly adapted for fruit containers to hold the container while it is being tilled and thereby saving one handling of the fruit which now is picked into a bucket or bag" and then poured into a container.
The general object of the invention is to provide a novel sling tor the indicated purpose, whereby the container may be securely held in support-ed position in the sling or released with facility.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of practical eitamples of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sling embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof with the container in position;
.Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 3-3, Figure 2; showing" the parts in position with tne container engaging elements in the inner position;
Figure 4- .is a vertical section similar to Figure 3 with the engaging elements in the outer position;
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical section as indicated by the line 5--5, Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a slight modification in the swingable container-engaging elements;
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6 but showing a further slight modification. In carrying out my invention in the form shown in Figures 1 to 5, a skeleton sling body 10 is used which for lightness is formed of wire and presents rectangular top and bottom frames connected by corner posts 10 Shoulder straps 19: are provided secured at the front to hanger loops 11 provided on the rear longitudinal member of the top frame near the ends of said longitudinal member. Fiaid loops 11 are integral in practice with vertical tie a bottom frames.
wires 11 extending between the top and At the back said straps converge and are secured to an arched member 12} projecting above the front longitudinal member of the top trams; Said arch member- 13 here shown as integral with tie wires 13, extending between the top and bottom frames oi the body at the trout, the material torming said arch and tie wires being given turns as at 14.- about the t'ront longitudinal bar of the top frame.
liingagin g elements 15 are provided at the bottom of the body 10 at each end to engage beneath a container A, said elements in-the 'l'orm shown in Figures 1 to 5 having rectangular depressed portions 16 to accommodate the bottom cleats in the container Tn l' igure 6 is shown the engaging element: '5 adapted to be disposed beneath the bottom of container formed without the cleats. To Figure 7 the engaging ele ments 15 are the same as the elements 15 except that they have rounded outer corners 15 to contorm to a container having rounded corners.
The elements 15 at each end or" the body 10 are integral with levers 1.8, the material forming the levers and engaging elements being given a turn at each side arm thereot as at 17 about the bottom frame of the body to swing on the body to a position for carrying the engaging elements 15 be neath the container A. or to swing said elements laterally out-ward away from the planes of the ends of the container.
The material forming a lever 18 at the upper end thereot' is formed with a depressed portion 19 which extends through a link 20 which presents a longitudinal slot 21 in which the lever at its upper end may have sliding and roclrable movement. At the lower end or the slot 21 the link. 20 curves laterally outward so that the depressed portion 19 of the lever will so engage the link 20 as to prevent swinging movement of the lever, whereby to main-- tain the engaging elements 15 beneath the container A. At the upper end of the slot 21 a bend is termed in the link 20 to provide a shoulder 28 to engage the depressed portion 19 ot lever 18 in a manner to hold the engaging elements 15 in the outer position away from the plane of the container as shown in Figure 4t.
The link 20 is hung at its upper end on a suitable member of the body 10. As here shown said link 20 has the upper ends of its side arms formed with eyes 20 through which passes a horizontatend bar 24 slightly below the top of the body 10. Each bar 2 has its ends secured as by eyes 25 to the adjacent end member of the top frame of the body 10, the bar 24 being braced by a vertical tie wire 26 connecting said bar with the end member of the bottom frame. The upper ends of the levers 1S serve as finger holds foroperating the' lever for throwing the enga ing elements 15 to the inner or outer po sitlons. It will be observed that the upper end of the link 20 is on a fixed member of the frame 24 and the lever 18 fulcrumed on the fixed member of the bottom so that sim ple and direct movements of the lever serve to throw the engaging elements 15 to either position and it will be further noted that the lever 18 and link 20 are automatically locked against movement in both positions of the engaging elements, 15.
I wouldstate in conclusion that while the illustrated examples constitute practical embodiments of myinvention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied Without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A sling for containers including a body, elements swingingly mounted on the body at the bottom for movement beneath a container or laterally outward from the engaging position, a lever to actuate said retaining-elements, and a link pivoted at its oo-engaging members to automatically hold the lever in position with said engaging elements inweither the inner or the outer position.
2. A sling of the class described including a body adapted to receive a container, engaging elements for the container, mounted on said body at the bottom to swing beneath the container or outwardly away from the container, levers having connection with said elements to swing the same to either positiomand links pivoted to the frame at their upper ends and formed with Longitudinal slots through which membeis of the le vers at the upper ends of the latter pass, said links havin their lower ends curved laterally outward and formed with shoulders near the upper ends of the slots, said lower ends and said shoulders adapted to ongagethe said members of the levers to hold the levers with said engaging elements in either position.
3. A sling of the class described including a body adapted to receive a container, engaging elements for the container mounted on said body at the bottom to swing beneath the container or outwardly away from the container, levers having connection with said elements to swing the same to either position, and links pivoted to the frame at their'upper ends, said links-having means to automatically effect holding engagement with the lever and prevent accidental movement thereof in either position of said container-engaging elements.
