Sci-mittens; citizens or" the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county or" Butler and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fire Extinguishers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi"? the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings. and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part oi this specification.
This invention relates to portable fire e1;- tinguishers and the primary object oi? the invention is to provide a novel and e'fficient construct-ion of fire extinguishers in which a liquid is adapted to be discharged. by pressure generated within the co'nteiner. the chemicals for generating the pressure being normally separated'and adapted to combine at the will of the operator.

In O2L11V1I10 out our invention, we prefer to employ a cylindrical container 1., closed 1 at one end by a permanent closure 2, and at the other by a removable cap The removable cap 3 is threaded at .4: to: the upper end of the cylinder 1, and it has a central opening 5. surrounded by a depending cup comprising a rim 6, with an inwardly projecting flange 7, the rim having openings 8, as will be clearly seen by reference to the drawings. The upper portion of the cupshaped member is threaded as at 9 to receive a threaded plug 10, having a depending rim or ring 11 provided with openings 12 adapted to align with the openings 8 1n the rim 6.' The cup-shaped member constistopper for the other. the contents of the two being normally separated,but adapted to be combined by appropriate mechanism which will be hereinafter described. 7
The flask or container 18 is shown as consisting of a substantially elongated cylindrical member closed at the'end 14: and having an outwardly projecting flange 15 at its upper end to lie upon the flange 7, by means of which the flask 13 is supported. The complementary flask 16 tightly fits within. the flask l3 and serves as a stopper to close off the chan'iiber l'l, in which inay be located a suitable chemical, such as soda. The upper end of the plunger rod is closed oil by a. sealing cap 26. The plug 20 isprovided with a peripheral, laterally projecting'flangeQT, which may rest upon a packing washer 28 lying upon the upper ends of the flasks 1.3 and 16. so that they will be sealed against communication with the interior of the cylinder 1, and when the rod 22 is in its uppermost position, the openings .24 willbe sealed by the packing 27' and the openings 25 by the packing 27".
A suitable liquid '29 may be provided Within the cylinder 1, butnot quite fill the same, and a discharge tube 80 may be carried by the cap 3, having its inlet 31 at the bottom of the cylinder 1 and its outlet 32 outside the cap 8, as clearly shown in the drawings.
After the parts are assembled as shown in Fi 1, it will be apparent that the chemicals wifi keep indefinitely because they will be separated and can not combine so that chemical actions and reactions can take place.
When it is desired to use the extinguisher, the rod 22 can be reciprocated, so that its plunger will break the seal -l8, permitting the acid to combine with the soda. so that gas will be formed. The gas can pass from the two chambers 17' and 19 through the openings 24, through the hollow portion of the rod 22, through the openings 25, open ings l2 and 8, onto the body of the liquid and force it through the tube 30, to be discharged from the nozzle 32.
When it is desired to re-charge the extinguisher, the plug 10, whose flange 11 bears on the flange of the plug 20, maybe removed, whereupon-the plug 20 may be removed. The rod 22 may be grasped to lift the chemical containers off the seat formed by the cup-shaped member of thecap 3, and new chemical containers can be introduced in the form of renewals and liquid placed in the cylinder 1, the containers being put back in place when the device is ready for use.
It will be observed that when the device is operated so as to cause the chemicals to come out, that the entire contents of the extinguisher will be forced out so that it will be necessary to renew each time the device is operated. This is a very important feature of the invention, because this will insure that a full charge is ready each time the extinguisher is-used, this being a material advantage over that class of extinguishers in which-fractional quantities can be released, with the result ofttimes that when 7 the extinguisher is most needed, there is only a small quantity remaining which will be available to apply to the fire.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the device is eflicient, inexpensive and easily operated and that the chemicals may be retained in their original condition without fear of deterioration and that the. device is capable of being used whenever desired.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fire extinguishercomprising a liquid container having atop opening, a depending cupsuspended from the top and surrounding the opening, the cup consisting of arim having, openings and an inwardly turned flange at its lower edge, a plug threaded in the edgeof the openingin the top oi the container, two nested chemical containers, the inner one of whichis shorter than the outer one, the outer container having a-top flange hollow plunger having openings communi eating with the containers and having open-, ings communicating with a space between the first and second plugs so that gas can pass from the inner containers through the opening in the rim of the cup into the liquid con- 12311191 to apply pressure upon the liquid in the liquid container, and a discharge pipe leading from the liquid container to atmosphere.
2. A fire extinguisher comprising a liquid container having a depending, cup-shaped recess with a central opening in the bottom thereof to provide a rim flange, a cylindrical chemical container having a closed lower end and an open upper end, a flange on the container resting upon the rim flange of the cup-shaped recess, a second cylindrical container nested in the first chemical container, a plug closing the top of the second chemical container and having a flange c0-extensive with the flange of the first chemical container, a packing between the flange of the plug and the flange of the first chemical container, a stufling box in the plug, a hollow plunger longitudinally movable in the stufling box, the plunger having openings adapted to be brought into communication with the second chemical container whereby communication can be established between the chemical containers and the hollow portion of the plunger, a plug closing the top, of the cup-shaped recess in the liquid ,con-
tainer and having a stuffing box through which the hollow plunger extends, there being a space between the first and second plugs, the hollow plunger having openings adapted to communicate with the space to establish communication between the hollow plug in said space, the walls of the second plug and the depending wall of the cupshaped recess having aligning openings to,
establish communication between the space and the interior of the liquid container, and a discharge.v pipe communicating with the bottom of the liquid container.
