Jan. 15, 1924- w. P. SMITH GOLF CLUB Filed Oct. l2 1920 Patented Jan. 15, 1924.
WILLIAIE PERCY SMITH, OF SOUTHWARK, LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOB/ TO W. P.
SIi'IITH SPORTS COMPANY LIMITED, OF HOLBORN, LONDON, ENGLAND.
GOLF CLUB.
Application filed October 12, 1920. Serial No. 416,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM PERCY SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain residing at 11 Brook Street, Kennlngton Road, Southwark, in the county of London, En land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf Clubs, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of golf clubs and the like, of the kind in which the head is unprovided with a socket for attaching the shaft thereto, the latter being inserted directly into an open recess in the said head.
According to my invention I form the head of the socket at the heel portion thereof with an open ended slotted recess advantageously of rectangular shape eX tending from top to bottom thereof, and the end of the shaft is correspondingly shaped to fit and completely fill said recess wherein it may be secured by glue. The said recess has substantially the same width and depth in a direction measured from the heel towards the toe of the head as the diameter of said shaft. Suitable means such as a pin or screw is preferably passed through the head of the club and the end of the shaft to retain th portions of the head formed by the said recess securely to the end of the said shaft.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, I will now describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the head of a golf club constructed in accordance withmy invention.
Figure 2 is a section taken along the line 1-'l of Figure 1.
same width and depth in a direction Ineasured from the heel towards the toe of the head as the diameter of said shaft. The end 6 of the shaft is'adapted to be secured to the head by being glued into the reces a. C is a pin of wood which passes through the holes a, a formed in the head and the hole I) in the shaft and serves to firmly retain the parts in place. In some cases the said wooden pin may be substituted by a metal screw D which would act to clamp the walls of the recess a in the head of the club to the sides of the end 6 of the shaft Figure 3).
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A golf club consisting in the combination of a wooden head having anopen end-ed slotted recess in the heel thereof extending from top to bottom. a wooden shaft shaped to fit and completely fill said recess which has ubstantially the same width and depth in a direction measured from the heel towards the toe of the head as the diameter of said shaft and means for securing the head and shaft together.
WILLIAM PERCY SMITH.
