Description

UNITnn STATES PATENT FFICE.
ERIX M. HESSELBOM, OF ILLAWARA, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,060., dated Marrh 3, 1874; application filed J une 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, ERD; M. HnssELBoM, residing at Illawara, in the parish of Carroll and State of Louisiana, have invented certain Improvements in Scraper and Cleaner for Corn or Cotton, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class of scrapers and cleaners which are adapted to cultivate or loosen the surface of the earth upon both sides of a row of growing crops; and my improvement consists in the employment, in combination with a pair of scrapers, of a pair` of revolving cylinders, provided with harrow-teeth, and arranged, one upon each side of the row, in the rear of the Scrapers, and adjustably connected to the main frame of the machine, as will be more generally explained in the ensuing description, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved scraper and cleaner. Fig. 2 is an end View, and Fig. 3 a plan, of the same.
The same letters of reference are used in all the figures in the designation of identical parts. y
A represents an axle-tree, upon which the drive-wheels B B turn. rIo these drive-wheels are secured band-wheels C C, from which motion is communicated by bands D D to wheels E E, that are secured to the outer ends of cylinders F F. These cylinders are provided with barrow-teeth, and are set to conform with the shape of the ridge, and turn in bearings G, formed in the lower adjustable frames H H. The back part of these frames are hinged at I I to the aXle A, and the front part is retained in place by the guide-bolts J, and may be raised or lowered by turning the windlass-drum K. L is a rope, connecting said drum with the front ends of the frames H H. N N are cutters, intended to cut the dirt to the depth the pulverizers F F and scrapers M M are working, and prevent them from disturbing the dirt around the roots of the plants. rlhe cutters N N are held in place by the rods O, that pass through the side pieces of the frames H H, as shown in the drawing.
I am aware that sulky four-wheeled cultivators, combined with pulverizing cylinders and Scrapers, have been before used. I do not, therefore, broadly claim such device; but
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a cultivator, of the bandwheels C C, the movable fra-mes H H, and cutters N N, as herein shown, and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses: ERIK M. HESSELBM.
