IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES Specication forming part of Letters Patent N0.14S,004, dated February 24, 1874; application filed J une 13, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WARREN H. TAYLOR, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Washin g-Machines, of which the following is a speciiication:

This invention' relates to a washing-m achine that is constructed in a simple and durable manner, and adapted to be applied to any size tub, and the invention consists of a large corrugated wood roller with a metal facing, three small smooth or plain, rollers, one of which is smaller than the rest, arranged underneath the large roller, a clamping device, and set-screw for attaching the machine to the tub and adjusting it thereon, the said parts being mounted on a suitable framework, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, in whichsimilar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a .side view of my device attached to an ordinary tub, with a portion of the tub broken away. Fig. 2 is a top View of the washer. Fig. 3 is avertical cross-section through the center of the rollers. Fig. 4 is the adjusting-screw. Fig. 5 is a View ofthe spring-bearing of the corrugated roller detached.

In a suitable frame-work, consisting of a a base, a, and vert ical side pieces b b, a wooden corrugated roller, A, is mounted.

As is well known, these rollers, when made of wood, as usual, rapidly become cracked, roughened, and worn by the action of the water and garments in Washing; and in order to obviate this, this roller is covered or faced with sheet metal, as indicated at H, Fig. 3, whereby it is greatly strengthened and made much more durable.

Underneath roller A, and journaled in the side pieces b b, are three, more or less, small rollers, F F' F, the central roller, F', being smaller than the others, to correspond with the arc of revolution of roller A. These roll! ers are of wood or othermaterial, and are made with a Smooth, plain surface. The rollerA is supported in spring-bearings within the sides b b, which are composed of a pin, D; around which a spring, G, is coiled, (see Fig. 5, and dot-ted lines, Fig. 1,) whereby the roller A is permitted to yield to the pressure of the garments as they pass between thesaid roller and the smaller ones. One end of the shaft of roller A is extended a short distance beyond the frame-work, and to it a crank-handle, c, is attached, for rotating said roller. To one of the sides b twoV standards, B B, are attached, at such an angle as to resemble a V, and they are Aalso inclined slightly outward from Jthe frame, and to these standard-arms B' B' are secured by means of hinges cl, of such length as to leave a space of about an inch between the two parts. Bolts e c extend from standards B through the arms, and have their ends threaded, on which thumb-nuts f fare screwed, these being on the outside of the arms. An adjusting-screw, c, is set in the lower part of the frame-work. The standards B, Varms B', screw-bolt, and adjusting-screw, I term the clamping device, for, by means thereof, the machine is secured to the edge of a tub, asindicated by E, the arms and screw-bolt serving to clamp the frame to the tub, and the screw c admitting of its adjustment to the proper position on any size tub.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In a washing-machine, the clamping device constructed with standards B and arms B', hinged thereto, and adjustable by means of screw-bolts, in combination with an adjustin gscrew, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a washing-machine, the combination of a metal-faced corrugated roller `journaled in spring bearings, (three, more or less,) plain rollers, and the clamping device, all constructed substantially as herein shown and described.
