application filed lllecember' 11, 1826.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY Lsrrnnr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Britain, Hartford County, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Snap Switch, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a rotary type switch, and the main object is to provide a simple and inexpensive construction which is reliable, and the parts of which may be readily assembled.
Another object is to so construct and arrange the parts that they may be accurately made at reasonable cost.
The drawings illustrate one form of mechanism embodying my invention.
- Figure 1 is a side view and partial section of a construction embodying the improvements of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view and partial section on the plane of the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the parts particularly involved in my invention.
The insulating base 5 may be of any suitable construction with any convenient arrangement of terminals, contacts, etc.
The spindle 6 is rotatably supported in the base in a convenient manner, for instance, by the bushing 7, and provided with a suitable finger piece or handle 8 for turning it.
.L bearing. abutment, or ratchet plate 9 is secured suitably in the base, for instance, by the bushing 7, and may be prevented from rotating in the base by one or more lugs such as 10 'irojecting into recesses 11. The plate J is provided with a series of lugs such as 12 struck. upwardly therefrom and disposed at intervals around the edge thereof. The detent or pawl tooth 13 is carried by a U-shaped plate 14 which embraces one side of the cam 15 carried by the shaft 6. This pawl plate is fornicdwith an opening 18 on one edge so that it embraces only one side of the cam 15, and can be slipped on from the side in assembling the parts. By reason of the pawl plate being open at the side instead of having a hole punched in it for the cam as is customary in structures of this character, it is possible to stamp out the plate so that one side of it will be pertectly smooth, in fact the edges may be rounded somewhat, as indicated at 16 and any hurt or roughness will be all on the Serial Ito. 429,809.
opposite face. The usual procedure in stamping out a pawl plate with a hole therein would be to feed flatstock to a press and first punch out a hole in say a downward direction. The upper edge of the hole would be smooth or slightly rounded and a burr would appear on the lower side. The stock having the hole would then be advanced to a point over a die having the contour desired for the pawl plate and a correspondingly shaped punch would move downwardly and force the entire plate into or through the die. This last operation would leave the lower side of the pawl plate smooth or slightly rounded and a burr would appear on the upper side. Thus each side of the finished plate would have a burr and a rounded edge, the burrs occuring at the lower side of the hole and at the outer upper side of the plate while the rounded edges would be at the upper side of the hole and at the under outer side of the plate. By making the pawl plate open at one side as herein disclosed the entire plate may be stamped at one stroke, say in a downward direction, and all the lower edges will be rounded and any burrs occuring will be all at the upper edges. By putting thesmooth face against the bearing plate 9, any friction tending to retard the movement of the plate 14L is reduced to a minimum.
I On the spindle 6 is mounted another memher 17, which may be termed a carrier, which has flanges 18--18 extending toward the plate and SQI'YIDQ as guides for the pawl plate 14. This member 17 carries the rotatable contact member 19, which is adapted to make and break contact wit-h the usual stationary contacts (not shown). The carrier preferably has a sleeve 20 on the spindle 6. A spring 21 surrounds the sleeve 20 and has one end connected with the lug 22 on the carrier 17, and the other end connected to the lug 23 on the spindle 6.
The normal position of the parts is as shown in Fig. 1. Whenthefinger piece or handle 8 is turned, the spring 21 is tightened and the rotation of the cam 15 clockwise retracts the pawl tooth 13. from the lug 12 of the abutment plate 9. As soon as the tooth 13 is free of the lug 12, the spring snaps the carrier and pawl plate, and the cam being at that instant relatively stationary, causes the pawl plate to be moved so that the pawl 13 engages the next lug 12 2.116
