Be it known that I, LEO J. TVAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Clippers, of which the following is a specification.
y invention relates to electric clippers especially designedv for use in barber shops. though it is suitable for use in a variety of other ways where hair cutting devices are employed, such as the clipping, trimming, or shearing of animals, and similar uses.
One object of my invention is the production of a device in which all of the moving elements. as well as those elementsthat produce the motion are a part of the clipper Which is handled by the operator.
Another object of my invention is the provision of means whereby the motion which is imparted to the clipper portion of the mechanism may be produced electro-magnetically without the necessity of using any form of circuit breaker or interrupter,
Other objects of the invention will appear and be described in the specification.
The novelty of my invention will'be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically set out in the claims.

I am aware that electrical clippers have been produced wherein the reciprocating motion of one of the clipper blades has been derived from an electric motor through the medium of a flexible shaft and suitable motion translating apparatus; also clippers in which the moving clipper blade has been operated electro-magnetically, the pulsations in the current being produced by or through the medium of a vibrator or current interrupter which alternately opens and closes the circuit through the electric-magnets, and it is to overcome the disadvantages of the above mentioned forms of clippers that my invention has been conceived.
Those structures which employ an electric motor and a flexible shaft With the delicate translating mechanism in the clipper handlearc easily rendered inoperative and require considerable attention to maintain them 1n proper operating condition, while those structures which operate electro-magnetically on a direct current require a vibrator to produce the interruptions to the flow of the current and at the normal voltage available for this class of work it has been found exceedingly ditficult to produce a vibrator which would not be rendered ineffective through the arcing caused by this voltage. It is to overcome the disadvantages inherent in both the above mentioned types and to produce a device which will operate con tinuously and successfully without either a flexible shaft and its accompanying mechanism or a vibrator and its accompanying troubles, that my invention is aimed.
For purposes of illustration and to show a form of structure embodying my invention 1 represents a metallic casing of suitable size and shape to be grasped by the operator, such easing forming the handle by means of which the instrument is guided and controlled while in use. Electro-mag netic coils 2 and '3 are mounted on a suitable core 41, and suitably secured to one of the walls of the casing, the terminals of the coils being connected as by leads 5 and 6, through the medium of any suitable switch, with a source of alternating current supply such is used generally in connection with the ordinary incandescent electric lights, the connection to the source of current supply being by means of the ordinary plug and socket, where it is desired to so install the device that it may be readily disconnnected, or in any other manner desired.
A bar 8 which either carries or comprises an armature for the electro-magnet 3 and 4 and which is mounted, as at a in the handle portion 1, extends to and is operatively connected with the moving clipper blade 9, which rests upon and is held in contact with the stationary clipper blade 10, the latter being secured to the handle portion 1.
Any suitable means such as a spring -11 may be employed to normally hold the bar 8 away from the ends of the core of the electro-magnets so that when an alternating electric current is passed through the electro-magnets the bar 8 will be caused to vibrate, thereby causing the movable clipper blade 9 to a reciprocate with relation to the stationary clipper blade 10.

It is to be noted that the weight ofthe moving parts of the clipper must be so proportioned with relation to the attraction of the electro-ma gnets that the rate of vibration of the bar 8 is different from the cycle of the alternating current for the reason that if the rate of vibration of the bar coincides with the current cycle each succeeding alternation of the current will add its resultant magnetic pull to the already harmoniously vibrating. bar, thus causing progressively increased over-running of the device when operating under no load, and a lessening of the normally full stroke under load, whereas if the normal rate of vibration of the bar is different from the current cycle, each maximum; magnetization or saturation of the coils will produce a full stroke of the danger of overclipper blad running under no running under Having thus fully described my invention,
