GEORGE BYRON CARROLL, OF EAST LANSNG, MICHGAN.
COMBINATION WHEELBARROW.
Application led J une 19, 1922. Serial No. 569,392.
To all whom t may concer/la.'
Be it known that l, Groen B. CARROLL, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at East Lansing, in the county of lngham and State of Michigan, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Wheelbarrow; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to an improved article carrier which is capable of being converted to provide an ordinary wheel barrow or a carrier for milk cans and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a carrier of this class which embpdies a wheel-supported frame on which the box or article container of the barrow is mounted, this box having its bottom connected with the frame in a manner to permit it to be suspended beneath said frame when the latter is swung over to invert it, whereby to provide a platform on which milk cans or other articles may be supported.
Another object of the invention is to provide a carrier of the above construction, wherein the preferred means for connecting the platform with the frame is such as to permit the platform to be raised or lowered to the diderent elevations independent of the frame.
A still further object of the invention is to provide novel means between the suspension devices and the frame for limiting the swinging movement of the platform in a rearward direction when the device is used as a carrier for milk cans.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
ln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a carrier constructed in accordance with this invention showing the same arranged for carrying milk cans.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section of Figure 1 showing the frame raised oif of the floor, ground, or other place on which the carrier is rested.
Figure 3 is an elevational view showing the parts reversed to provide a wheel-barrow.
Figure L.tis a top plan view of Figure l with the cans removed.
Figure 5 is an enlarged view showing one of the details of the invention.
In the drawings, the numerals l designate the spaced parallel sidebars of a supporting frame which are connected at their forward ends to a single wheel 2. To each of these side-bars adjacent the inner ends, legs 3 are connected. lt is to be noted that these legs are connected to the side-bars intermediate their ends so that they project on both sides of the bars and serve as supports for the frame in either of its positions.
As before intimated, the improved carrier is capable of use in the capacity of a wheel barrow when arranged in one manner, and is capable of being converted to provide a novel carrier for milk cans or the like when arranged in another manner. For the sake of convenience of description, attention will first be confined to the use of the device as a carrier for the milk cans C. Reference being had more particularly 'to Figures l, 2 and fi, it will beseen that the numeral 4 designates a platform which is suspended in spaced relation below the side-bars of the aforesaid frame by a plurality of pairs of links 5, the upper links of each pair converging and being pivotally connected to the intermediate portion of the side-bars l as indicated at 6 while the lower links 7 are pivotally connected with the lower ends of the upper links and diverge and are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the platform e adjacent the corners thereof as indicated at 8. lt may be conveniently stated here that the links of each pair are adjustably connected together through the medium of removable pins 9 which are selectively passed through the aligned holes of a series of holes formed in the overlapping ends of the links. It is obvious that this particular connection for the links of each pair is provided to permit the elevation of the platform to be varied independent of the frame for supporting smaller cans or articles. Although l have shown and described a particular method of enabling the platform to be vertically adjusted with respect to the supporting frame, l wish it to be understood that any other suitable means may be provided for accomplishing this end.
As before indicated, novel means is provided between the links and frame to limit the swinging movement of the platform in one direction. Although thismeans could be of some other construction, vit preferably comprises a pair of disks 9 which surround the pivot pins G .and are arranged between the links and side-bars of the supporting frame. Each disk is provided on its inner face with a raised portion l0 providing a shoulder. This projection l0 is substantially triangular and the upper links of the righthand pairs of links labut against one inclined edge as shown clearly in Figure 5. `Since the links of each pair are connected together by the hereinbefore described means and held against relative pivotal movement, it will be seen that the movement of the platform can be limited in this manner. It is to be noted that the disks 9 are rotatable on the pivot pins 6 so as to permit folding of the links to permit them to assume the positions disclosed in Figure 3. However, means is provided for maintaining these disks against rotation when the device appears as shown in Figure l. Although this means could be of some other construction, it simply comprises pins l1 passing through holes in the disks and side-bars l. It is obvious that by removing the pins 1l, the disks will be free to rotate land permit the aforesaid folding of the links.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that lf have devised acarrier embodying a wheel supported frame from which is suspended, through the medium of pairs of diverged links, a platform on which milk cans or the like'are designed to be supported. The platform is adjustable toward and from the supporting frameiand is substantially self-leveling. However, the swinging movement is limited one direction by novel means herein described.
j When it is desired to convert the `device from a `milk can carrier to a wheel barrow, it is only necessary to grasp the side-bars and swing them over to the left to bring the legs 3 which are thenextending above the bars to a position to engage the ioor on the other side of the wheel. In so doing the aforesaid platform et drops down onto the upper edges of the side-bars and provides a bottom for the bor; of the barrow. lt is of course necessary to` remove the connecting pins 9 before the links of the pairs 5 are permitted to fold to assume the relations sliown in Figure 8. is also necessary to reniove the locking pin ll to permit rotation of the aforesaid disks 9. Attention beingnow directed to Figure 3, it will be seen that the aforesaid platform, is provided with openings lf2 to receive the lower extended ends of brackets 13 carried by the side-boards lll of the barrow box. These side-boards at their forward ends, are received in 'vertical grooves l5 formed in the endboard le. Although it is not essential,
.neath the latter,
it is desirable to permanently secure the end-board 16 to the s idefbars lso that it will at all times be in position for lready use.
A careful consideration of the foregoing description taken r in j Connection with the drawings will doubtless be sufficient to enable persons skilled in this art to obtain a clear understanding of the invention, the several features yand advantages thereof, and the manner of forming both the barrow and carrier for milk cans and the like. riherefore, a more lengthy description yis thought unnecessary. j
Since probably the best results maybe obtainedy with the constructionnlaiid far-I rangement herein shown and described, this is taken as the preferred embodiment 'of the invention. However, I wish it tok be understood that minor changes coming within the scope of the invention as clain'ried may be resorted to if desired.
