To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN F. Rica 8 citizen or the United states, residin at oia- In the construction sheets in my patent,
means were provided for prhventing in'ury to the pneumatic tube at thev 'intw ere theyalve stem extends throng thetube, this beingprovifled hy'means of a rubber In the drawings in which an embodiment of invention is shown- Flg'ure 1 is a sectional view showing a tube in position with respect to the wheel, andthevalve stem and ad in place; i
Fig. '2 is a view of t e pad,'parts being broken away to show the interior construction; and I Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of eferring now to the drawings in detail, the construction shown therein eom rises the inner tube which may be 0 any usual or suitable construction, the valve "stem 11, the head 12 which is inserted through anopening 13 into the inner tube 10, and ademountable rim 14 and wheel portion 15 which may be of any usual or suitable construction,
- A pad 16 is secured to the tube 10 at the pad having a inetalplate embedded therein,- point where. the valve stem 11 extends the plate having an opening throughwhiclr through it, .this pad being provided in order the valvesteni asses-the valve stemheing. 'tofprevent injury to the tube at this rovided with c ampiug members-which emrace the ad andthe portion of the 'tire through w ich the stein the plate servin to prevent that portions: the ad and tu embraced by the clamping-111cm r from be ng squeezed out btween the clamping members when, the elamping pressure was applied-or when the tire was sul ijlected to use.
e construction shown in my ,patent answers the purpose for which it was intended, that is, it prevents the ad from being squeezed out fromiinder t e clam ing members, but as the edge of the hole, in the metal plate through which the stem ex- Itendcd was un ield'ing, the hole had to be made OODSldGl'B. 1y larger than the diameter of the stem, in order to permit the ready insertion of the stem through the pad. 'lhe obiect of my present invention is to-provi a a substitute for the plate which will have all the advantages of the plate and in addition will permit the ready insertion of the valve stem through the pad and at the same time 'will have an "openin therethrou a which will he of substantially the same iameter as the diameter of the valve stem, thus bringing the element which prevents squeezing out of the pad, up close to the valve stem.
Further objects will a pear from the detailed description to IE0 low and -from the appended claims.
I'lhe main' feature of this padis'the insert of wire mesh-17. This mesh. insert int.
has an opening at 18 which is just large enough to "permit the valve stem 11 to be inserted therethrough, As a matter of fact, it may be made so ewhatl smaller than'the valve stem, so that thestexn will have tobe forced through the Porting the of the mesh at the openiiig ggdiu slig tly to permit this insertion; ile t e wire mesh insert willyield slightly to emit the insertion of the valve steal it wi l nevertheless prevent the ed as of the pad adjacent the valve stem from ing squeezed out between the head of the valve stem 12 and the clamping member 18 when the latter is tightened up.
This metal mesh insert may be secured in the ad by placing it between two'la ers of rubl er, and then vulcanizin the rub r together. The layers of rub er are vulcan- 1 ized together through the meshes of the Wire insert so that a' very tough durable construction is secured, the construction being substantially as though the wire mesh'were embedded in anintegral body .of rubber. If
the construction shown in my previous patent, in that the edges of the pad and tube adjacent the stem cannot be squeezed out from underneath the clampi members, and in which the member w ich accomplishes this desirable result can be made-to extend close up to the valve stem itself. The wire mesh furthermore has more flexibility than the metal late, which enables it to accommodate itsel to the tube to which it is attached. The wire mesh enables the two layers of rubber between each of the plates to be readily vulcanized together through the mesh of the fabric which gives a very tough construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. A pneumatic tube having an o enin therein, a valve stem passing throug openin and a pad for preventing injury to said tu e adjacent said stem, said pad comprisin a layer of flexible yielding material and a ayer of woven metal having an openin through which said stem passes.
A pneumatic tube having an opening therein, a valve stem passing through said open'in and a pad for preventin' injury to said tu adjacent said stem, sai pad comprisin a bod of flexible yielding material and a layer 0 woven metal embedded in said body, and having an opening through which said stem passes.
33. A pneumatic tube having an oplening therein, a valve stem passing throng sai said openin and a pad for preventin injury to said tu adjacent said stem, sai pad comprising two layers of flexible yielding material, and a layer of woven metal between said layers of flexible material, said layers of flexible material being, vulcanized togather through" the mesh of said woven metal layer, said woven metal layer having an openmg'through which said valve stem extends. 4. A pneumatic tube having an openin therein, a valve stem passing through said opening, and a pad for preventinginjury to said tube adjacent said stem, said pad comprising a body of flexible yieldm r material, and. a layer of woven metal em dded in said body, said body being vulcanized to said tube, and said layer of woven metal having an opening through which said valve stem ,extends.
5. A pneumatic tube having an openin therethrough, a valve stem passing through said openin and a ad for preventing injury to sai tube pad comprising a ho y of flexible yielding material, and a layer of woven metal embedded in said body, said layer of woven (jiacent said stem, said I metal having an opening throughwhiclr said valve stem extends, said valve stem being rovided with clamping members embracing the pad and the portion of the tube through which the valve stem extends.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name. A
