citizen of the "German Empire, residing at Barmen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning the Felt of Paper and Card- Machines During Their Op-v board Making eration, for which I have filed applications for Letters Patent in Germany, Dec. 5, 1921; Austria, :Feb. 14, 1922; czechoslovakia,

My invention relates to a device for cleaning the endless felt of paperand cardboard making machines during the operation of the machine. in the known devices of this kind the felt is conducted over guide rollers and through a cleaning liquid, thelatter being lrept in motion by means of. a rotating paddle wheel. Hitherto the paddle wheel has always been located on the operative side of the felt and dirt particles is washed away, but another portion is pressed more deeply into the felt;
This drawback is obviated by the present invention in that thefelt is conducted in the to liquid to pass under the paddle wheel in such manner that the felt is guided at some distance from said paddle wheel around the latter, while facing said wheel with its back sid In that way, as experiments have proved, the felt is subjected to a very effective and beneficial cleaning this being probably due to the fact that, owing to the action of the paddle wheel, the liquid is pressed through 10 the felt from its rear side, whereby all particles of dirt are driven out of it.
Conveniently a number of such paddle wheels are provided, each arranged in a iii separate compartment of the liquidcontainer and the felt is conducted successively through the several compartments in counter-direction to the cleaning liquid. The result is that the felt comes into contact with liquid which is the cleaner the further the cleaning of the felt has progressed, so that the cleaning of the felt may be carried out more perfectly than heretofore, while, nevertheless, the consumption of cleaning liquid is diminished.

On the contrary, by the rotation of the paddle wheels, the wheels drive the cleaning liquid against the felt and from said non-operative side through the felt itself. In this manner all particles of the pulp or dirt which fill the pores of the felt at the operative side of the latter are thoroughly driven out of the felt and then washed away.
Above the right half of the container p is arranged the feed pipe m for the cleaning liquid, so that the latter acts first of all on the felt after its former cleaning in the left half; thereupon the. liquid passes over the partition h, which serves as overflow, into the left half of the container. Thence the liquid again flows alongside the band a and counter to its direction of movement, and then overflows the lower-level edge a of the trough, a further feed pipe 9 being provided if desired in order to augment the former liquid, this fresh liquid being driven by the paddle wheel through the felt. I wish it to be stated that my invention is not restricted to the exact constructional form shown and described, for many alterations and varitions may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention'as pointed out in the claims.
Claims V 1. In an apparatus for cleaning the felt in paper and cardboard-making machines during their operation, in combination; a container for'the cleaning liquid, a paddle wheel mounted in said container and adapted to rotate in the cleaning liquid, a number ofguide rollers for guiding the felt to be cleaned through the cleaning liquid, said rollers being partly mounted above said liquid container and partly within the latter and at a lower level than said paddle wheel and being at the same time so arranged with respect to said'wheel that the felt is guided at some distance from said paddle wheel around the latter, while facing said wheel with its back side. p
2. In an apparatus for cleaning the felt in paper and cardboard-making machines during their operation, in combination: a container for the cleaning liquid, a plurality of paddle wheels mounted in said container and adapted to rotate in the cleaning liquid,
a number of guide rollers for guiding the felt to be cleaned through the cleaning liquid and round each of said paddle wheels,

In an apparatus forcleanmg the felt of paperand cardboard-making-machines during their operation, in combination: a container for the cleaning liquid, said container being divided into a number of compartments, a number of paddle wheels mounted each in a said compartment and adapted to rotate in the cleaning liquid, a number of guide rollers for guiding the felt to be cleaned successively through the said compartments ofgthe said containensaid guide rollers being mounted partly above said container and partly within the compartments of the latter at a lower level than said paddle wheels and being at the same time so arranged with respect to said wheels that the felt is guided at some distance from each paddle wheel around 7 said 7 paddle wheels, while facing the latter with its back side, means for feeding the cleaning liquid to that compartment at which thefelt lastly leaves said container, an overflow between each two adjoining compartments of said container and an overflow at the outer wall of that compartment at which the felt first enters the said container.
