To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BnNo J. GUNDLACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Sharpening Beamers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an apparatus for sharpening reamers.
The main object of my invention is to provide a novel apparatus for sharpening reamers that can be adjusted easily to adapt it to reamers of different lengths and of different diameters. Other objects and desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
To this end I lhave devised a reamer sharpening apparatus which comprises a means for supportinga reamer,` a honing device that is adapted to be rubbed over the edges or outer ends of the blades or flutes of the reamer so as to restore the cutting edges of the blades to their original condition, and means for maintainingsaid honing device in such a position that it will bear squarely and evenly on the edges vor end surfaces of the blades of the reamer. The means that is used for supporting the reamer and preventing it from turning during the honing operation is constructed in such a way that it can be adjusted easily to adapt it to reamers of different lengths and different diameters, and the supporting means for the honing device is constructed in such a way that it can be adjusted to adapt it to reamers of different diameters and lengths or to vary thev pitch or angle of .the cutting edges of the reamer being honed.

Thereafter, the nut 17 is turned in a direction to bring the member 14 into substantially parallel relation with the reamer, and the screw 18 is turned in a direction to cause the end of the device B to engage one of the blades or flutes of the reamer. 'Ihe hone carrier C is then arranged transversely of the reamer with the hone C bearing upon the center blade at the top side of the reamer, and the outer end portion of the hone carrier resting upon the upper end of the support D. If the hone does not bear squarely or evenly upon the flat end :face of the blade on which the hone is resting, the support D can be raised or lowered by manipulating a screw 22 ina depending lug 23 on the support D that bears against the bearing E, or the same result can be accomplished by manipulating the screw 1-8 so as to cause the device B to exert pressure on the reamer and turn it into such a position that the hone will bear evenly on the particular blade of the reamer which the hone then engages. rIhereafter, the nut 17 is turned in a direction to move the member 15 downwardly so as to place the device B under a slight tension, as shown in Figure 2. In the honing operation the hone carrier C is moved Jforwardly and backwardly and also lengthwise of the reamer to a limited extent, so as to cause the hone to sharpen the cutting edges of the blades of the reamer, the hone carrier being operated either manually or by any suitable mechan- A'ter one blade of the reamer has been sharpened, the nut 17 and screw 18 are manipulated so as to disengage the device B from the reamer and permit the reamer to be turned so as to bring another blade into operative position, after which the nut 17 and screw 18 are manipulated so as to cause the hone C to bear squarely on the next blade that is to be sharpened.
The particular shape or form of the hone carrier C is immaterial, but I prefer to use a hone carrier that is provided with a relatively long handle and a portion 24 at the front end of said handle to which a hone C can be connected by screws or other suitable fastening devices 25, the support D for the hone carrier being provided in its upper end with a convexed bearing surface 26 on which the underside of the handle of the hone carrier C rests and a pair of upwardly-projecting ears 27 at the opposite ends of said bearing surface that prevent the handle of the hone carrier from slipping off the surface 26 during the honing operation. In the event the reamer being sharpened has cutting blades whose end faces are slightly rounded, as shown in Figure 3, it is desirable to use a hone carrier C2 whose handle is provided on its underside with a concaved surface 28, as shown in Figure 3, so as to cause a slight rocking motion to be imparted to the hone,
and thus cause it to bear evenly on the rounded edge of the blade when the hone is moved back and forth over the blade. 1
It is possible Vwith an apparatus of the construction above described to sharpen a reamer accurately without materially reducing the diameter of the reamer. Moreover, such an apparatus can be adjusted quickly to adapt it to reamers of different lengths and different diameters.
Having thus described my invention, what i claim as new and desire te secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A honing apparatus for reamers consisting of a frame provided with a base piece, means for maintaining a reainer in a substantially horizontal position, a member combined with said base piece, a verticallyadjustable honing device support carried by said member and arranged at one side or' the reamer, and an adjustable reamer holding device on said member arranged in opposed relation to said honing device support.
2. A honing apparatus for reamers consisting or a frame provided with a base piece, an adjustable means for maintaining a reamer in a suhstantiallv horizontal position, a longitudinally-adjustable bearing on said base piece, a pivotally mounted.,I adjustable honing device support carried by said bearing, a reamer holding device on said bearing arranged in opposed relation to said honing device support, and means for enabling said reamer holding device to be raised and lowered and also adjusted towards and away form the reamer.
