Description

Patented Dec. 25, 1923. f.
ALBERT w. raonsn, or LONG rsrann crr'v, NEW YORK.
nnnn-ornnnrnn PUMP.
Application filed september 6, 1922. Serial No. 586,490.
To all whom it may concern: ferrule 17 and a relatively long tubular Be it known that I, ALBERT W. MORSE, a shank 18. Shank 18 is screwed into ferrule citizen of the United States, and a resident 17 at right angles at 19. of Long Island City, in the county of Queens 20 is a handle piece having a somewhat e and State of New York, have invented cerenlarged central cylindrical portion at 21 tain new and useful Improvements in Handwhich has a tight drive it with the inner Operated Pumps, of which the following is part of ferrule 17. a specification. I Handle part 21 is bored out transversely This invention relates to improvements in and shank 18 longitudinally to engage with 5 10 hand operated pumps, the kind in which a a tight drive lit the plunger rod 11.
plunger is reciprocated within a barrel, by 22 is a cap suastantially cylindrical in means of a usually '1" shaped handle attached shape, in screw threaded engagement at 23 to one end of the plunger rod. with the upper end of pump ba "rel 10. 24
One of the objects of the invention is to is, a small tubular extension at the top of 113 eliminate the pinching or bruising of the cap 22. 25 is an inner central tubular profingers of the operator when the pump is at ject-ion below the top of cap 22, and is bored the limit of its downward stroke. out centrally to frictionally and slidingly Another object is to prevent the plunger engage the plunger rod 11. striking the bottom of the pump at each In assembling, the shank 18 is screwed 20 downward stroke and causing undue vibratightly into ferrule 17. Handle 16 is then tion or bending of the plunger rod and other forced into the ferrule until its cross bore is damages to the operating mechanism. in central alignment with the center bore of A still further object is to fasten the hanshank 18. The plunger rod 11 is then forced dle part proper to the plunger rod in a maninto the bore of shank 18 and into the handle 25 ner which is stronger than means heretofor with a very tight driving fit, fastening the employed and at the same time considerably plunger rod and the handle rigidly together. less expensive. In the usual construction of the operating The combination of these improvements means of a tire pump, the plunger rod is results in a pump far superior to any now generally threaded and screwed into the marketed, simpler in design and much handle T, and very frequently works loose. stronger in construction. In applicants device, the plunger rod and The invention is illustrated in the aocomhandle are so rigidly fastened together by panying drawings, which show a hand opermeans of drive fits that these parts practiated pump for inflating the tires of an autocally present one integral unit. so mobile, and in which Furthermore, in the usual tire pump, the Fig. 1 is a sectional view of such a pump shank of the handle T being very short and at the end of its downward stroke; the extension on top of cap 22 being rela- Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectively high, the operator invariably catches tional View of the operating means of the his fingers between the lower end of the ump; and shank and the cap when the plunger is at Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view the limit of its downward stroke. Inspecalong the plane of line 3-3 in Fig. 2. tion of Fig. 1 clearly discloses the fact that Like characters of reference denote similar it is impossible to bruise or pinch ones iinparts throughout the several views and the gers since owing to the relatively long shank following specification. (about twice its outside diameter) there is 10 is a barrel of the pump. 11 is a plunger 1 plenty of clearance between the operators rod, its lower endattached to a plunger 12. hand and the top of cap 22, when the lower 13 is a base to which is fastened the barrel end of shank 18 is limited in its downstroke' 10. 1a is an air passage. Base 13 is proby small extension 2a. In this position vided with a boss 15 containing (notshown there is a clearance between the plunger 12 in detail) the customary air inlet passage and the base of the pump, so that no strain and discharge check valve suitably conwhatever is exerted against the lower end nected to a rubber hose, adapted to be of the plunger rod, except the resistance of screwed or otherwise fastened to an autothe air, which clearance is instrumental in mobile tire; eliminating undue strains on the rod.
16 is a handle T, consisting of a tubular With the operating parts constructed as solid bar stock with the least possible,
disclosed by applicant, the handle ferrule and the shank may be made of tube stock or solid bar, and the cap 22 may be made of amount of waste due to the guide or extension 25 being at the inside of the cap, all of which result in a pump which is of simple design, strong in construction and most economical in manufacture.
What I claim as new, is:
1. In a pump of the character described, a handle, a handle ferrule fitting tightly over the said handle, a tubular shank screwed at 7 right angles into the said handle ferrule, and a plunger rod having a tight drive fit with the inner diameter of the said tubular shank and also being driven tightly into the said handle, the said shank being in length approximately twice its outside diameter.
2. In a pump of the character described, a handle, a tubular handle ferrule fitting tightly over the said handle, a tubular shank being in length approximately twice its outside diameter, screwed tightly into the said handle over the said handle, a tubular shank being in length approximately twice its outside diameter, screwed tightly into the said ferrule, a plunger rod having a tight drive fit with the inner'part of the said tubular shank and also being driven tightly intothe said handle, and a cap having an inner tubu lai extension 'in sliding engagement with the said plunger rod,'the downward stroke of the said plunger rod being terminated by contact of the said shank with thesaid cap. 7 a r 4,. In a hand operated pump of thereciprocating kind, a'handle, a tubular ferrule fitting tightly over the said handle, a tubular shank screwed tightly into the said ferrule,"
a plungerrod having a tight drive fit with h the inner part of the said tubularshank and also being driven tightly into' the 'said handle, and'a cap having an inner tubular extension in slidingfengagement with the said plunger rod, the downward strokeot the a said plunger rod being terminated by contact,
of the said shank with the said cap, the said shank being of a length sufficienttoprevent the pinching of an operators fingers when the plunger rod is at the end of its downward stroke.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
