STOVE-TOP CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed December 8, 1922.
To all 10 ham it may concern Be it known that T, EARL V. CoULsToN, a citizen of the United States, resident of liock Island, county of Rock Island, and State of I linois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove-Top Constructions, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to the construction of the tops of cooking stoves and particularly to the outer frames thereof.
The object of said invention is to produce a stove-top frame simple in structure and economical of manufacture, and which will also eliminate breakage.
A. cooking stove top consists primarily of an outer frame which extends completely around the stove, together with the loose inner pieces such as the lids and cross-pieces for which said frame forms a container. Said frame also provides the means to which the vertical side, front and back plates of the stove are secured.
These top frames have heretofore been commonly'made of cast iron either in sections bolted together or in one integral piece. The casting of such frames is relatively expensive and does not admit of much if any saving in quantity production. Furthermore, these cast iron frames are easily loss in shipping has re sulted due to this fact. Such tops also frequently breairin use as a result of ex pansion due to heating.
To overcome these heretofore existing difficulties and objections, my invention contemplates the construction of stove top frame having all of the required characteristics of form, constructed of wrought metal and substantially wholly of standard structuralsteel shapes such as angle-iron and channel-bars.

Referring first to Figs. 1, 3 and 4, the illustrated embodiment o my invention includes an outer rectangular frame-member 1 made from angle-iron, one leg 2 of which forms a part of the top surface of the stove and the other leg 3 of which forms an outer and downwardly extending peripheral strengthening flange, as shown in Fig. l.
This frame-member may consist of a single strip of angle-iron provided, before being bent into rectangular shape, with right-- angular notches 4, F lg. 5, intersecting the upper leg 2, the ends of the stripbeing formed with a right-angular bevel as shown in'Fig. 6. This strip is then bent into rectangular form so as to close the notches and the beveled ends 55 welded to each other, all as will be readily understood and seen from inspection of Fig. 1. The seams formed by the closing of he notches 4, may or may not be closed by welding.
As will al o be understood, the frame may be made of four separate pieces joined at the corners by welding.
Secured to the bottom of the part 2 of the frame is a second frame 6 formed of angleiron. the one leg 7 of which extends beyond'the inner periphery of frame-member 1. Figs. 3 and 4:, to form a dropped offset 8, the other leg forming a downwardly extending flange to which the side, front and back and in Fig. 81 have shown a combination of angle bar and flat plate which may be used if desired. Both these modified forms of construction are the same in principle as be suitably secured to the back of the framemember 1, which permits the smoke-pipe to be hidden behind the high shelf or closet (not shown) of the stove, as will beundcrstood by those skilled'in the art.
The old form of smoke -.pipe connection may be provided for as shown in Fig. 2. In this form the frame-member 1 is made to extendbackwardly beyond the back of frame 6 whereby they are separated horizontally. An additional frame-member 10 of angleiron is secured to the bottom of such rear portion of frame 1 and projects inwardly therefrom to provide a dropped offset for a flat steel rectangular strip (not shown) which may be placed across the rear of the top and in which the smoke-pipe connection ma be made as shown by the dotted line 11.

1. A stove-top frame made entirely from downwardly extendirig flange to which the stove sides may be secured. 2. A stove-top frame made from originally separate pieces of wrought metal and secured to each other so as to form an outer peripheral downwardly extending strengtheningflange, an inner peripheral member forming a dropped offset, and an inner downwardly extending flange to which the V stove sides may be secured.
. 3. A stove-top frame consisting of the combination with a main member made of angle-iron and having one of its legs forming an outer peripheral downwardl ex tending flange, the other leg formingthe top of said frame; of means madeof'wrought metal secured to the under side of said top The offset 8 leg and forming an inner downwardly extending flange and a dropped offset adjacent to the inner periphery of said top leg.
4. A stove-top frame consisting of the combination with a main member made of angle-iron and having oneof its legs. forming an outer peripheral downwardly extending flange, the otherleg forming the top of said frame; of a second wrought metal member secured to the bottom of said main member, havinga portionextending downwardly and a portion extending inwardly from said main member to form a dropped offset.
