Description

Dec. 25 M923. AWA@ C. C. STEEL ET AL TIRE CARRIER Filed Oct. 19 1,921
- ing position, alines A with the hole 13 in bracket-4;', 4for thefpassagef of the'hasp of a lock -or other locking device, which, when in place, absolutely prevents any movement of the s'addlfef and preventsn not only acci-f' dental displacement of the rim, but the removal thereof except by first removing the" locking device. y The riIng 12 normally and yieldingly holds the shoulder 9i of the saddle 7 projecting. downwardly below the band or support ing.,member,Y but when not locked', as above explained' is free lto rock on the abutment 6 ofthe brac-ketvt, and be forcedv upwardlyv by the Acontactof theri'mof a wheel with the inclined4 outerl face" on end ofthe sho-ulder 9,. ofJ the rsaddle 7 ,1 and thus permit the rimto be) placed-von` the band,I the other shoulder 8 of the saddle, al-wa-ysvprojecting sufficiently to form a stop for the rim.'
applying a rim or spare wheelto the carrier, theri-m` should be seated within the top saddles 3, andvthen by forcing the edge o f the rim against the inclinedv outer end of shoulder 9 of saddle 7 the spring will yield or' give and thus allow thel rim to pass ontoy the carrier,4 the saddle 7 springingv into locking position as therim passes over the shoulder 9j, a l i InFigure 4e we have shown the supportf ing, member inthe form of apcircle instead ofthe segment ofra circle, and we have also dispensed with the bolt and coiled spring and substituted aj flat spring strip 12aM securedv to-,the band'and bearing against top face of` theI saddle.
I-Iavi'ngfully described our' invention what weclaim as new anddesire to secure by Letters-Baten-t,l is
1.- In a tirer carrier, the combination f a supporting memberV vhavinga plurality of rimholding lugs, and a yielding saddle having bent ends, the said saddle bei-ng mounted on the supporting member and adapted to tilt longitudinally to' permit the rim to pass over one bent end,` and Vmeans for yieldingly holding said saddlein itsposition to engage and lock the rim on the supporting member.
2". In a tirecarrier, the combination of a supporting member having a plurality of pairs of rim holdinglugs', and a yielding saddle locatedl in a plane intermediate said pairs of lugs, the said saddle havingl bent rim holding ends and mounted adjacent one end to yield or tilt in the direction ofV its the side edges of a rim.V
3. In a tire carrier, the combination of aV yieldingly holding said; saddle in its normal ior rim lockingposition.
4. In a tire carrier, the combination of a supporting member' having a plurality of rim engagingsaddles rigidly secured thereto, a third saddle mounted .thereon totilt long axis, and yielding means for normally holding saidA saddle in position vto Ve'mgage endwise, and yielding means forV normally l holding said tiltingsaddle'in its rim locking position. 4 Y f Y 15; In a tire carrier, the combination of' a supporting member, al plurality of rimlocking saddles rigidly secured thereto, a bracket secured to the inner face of the-lower part' of saidmember, a saddle mounted to tilton said bracket and yielding means for normally holding the' tilting saddle in yits rim locking position.
6. In a tire carrier, the combinationof a supporting member, a plurality ofrim locking saddles rigidly secured thereto, a slotted bracket secured to said member, Vva saddle mounted in the slot of said bracket and adaptedvto tilt endwis'e, and yielding means for normally holdingl said tilting saddle in" its rim locking position.
7. In a'tire carrier,- thecombination'ofa supporting member, a plurality of rim locking' saddles secured thereto, a slotted bracketl secured vto the inner face ofsaid member intermediate the rigid saddles, a saddle mounted adjacent-its front end in said slot and adapted to tilt endwiseand a springsecu'red to said supporting member vand'engaging the saddle near its rear end for holding the latter in its normal, or rim ylocking position.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification. Y
