Be it known that I, CLIFroRJ) O. PETIT- JEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Transfer Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. in My invention relates to transfer mechanism and has particular reference to that type of such mechanism as is usedin connection with heading or upsetting machines or the like to carry a blank from the cut ofi point into register with operating tools.
While it is shown and described herein as being so applied, it is obvious that it may be adopted for other types of machines, and therefore I do not limit myself to such application.
It is the object of this invention, among other things, to so design and construct the same that the spring finger thereof may be actuated positively in a substantially defined path as well as to be yieldingly controlled, other objects being simplicity of con struction, certainty and efficiency of operation and adaptability for independent attachnient to machines of various styles and sizes without requiring substantial alteration or modification thereof.
To these and other ends my invention consists in the transfer mechanism having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

During this latter movement the spring finger, which is traveling with the cutter bar, snaps over the blank and is again in position against the cutter bar to receive a new blank for a succeeding operation. I
With the type of such mechanism heretofore generally used the spring fingerhas been pivotally connected with a member moving in a reciprocatory path. While the reciprocatory member is in motion, the spring finger is held in one of its positions by the spring mechanism above referred to, but upon the return of the cutter bar after the completion of its carry stroke, the spring finger is rocked upon its pivot mounting against the tension of the spring which permits it to pass over the blank'now held in the die or between the die and punch. spring causes the spring finger to again rock upon its pivot mounting and return t to its former position in relation to the cutter.
For some classes of work and in some types of machines it is desirable that the movement of the finger be as independent as is possible in the type of suchinechanism above described and positively moved instead of by yielding mechanism. This is especially desirable with blanks of large diameter or where the same are comparatively short in length, or the shape of the punch is'such that the spring finger is liable to be in the path of movement of the punch or other part.
In my invention such means are provided. The device is exceedingly simple in its construction, designed to be readily attached or detached without'material alteration of the structure thereof and will continuously operate with certainty and accuracy, and give the maximum sweep or movement to the tinger, commensurate with the structure'of the machines with which it is connected.
I have only shown herein so much of a header as is necessary to understand the application of my device. Such portion being generally known as the body, herein designated by the numeral 10, to which is secured a die block 11 having a die 12therein, and mounted thereon so as to have a reciprocatory movement is a cutter slide 13 having a cutter 14 connected with the inner end thereof.
In operation a wire rod or the like is fed either by hand, automatically or otherwise, through an opening 15 in the cutter die (not shown). As the cutter 14 moves across the 7 face of said die, a blank 16 is cut from the projecting end, and this is carried inwardly until. the axis thereof is substantially concentric with the axis of the opening in the die 12, thi being the substantial limit of the inward stroke of the cutter.
All of the above mechanism is old and well known in the art and requires no further detailed description herein. While I have shown one particular form of cutter 14 in the drawing, any other form or shape of cutter may be substituted and operate equally as well. 7
The blank 16 after being cut off at the opening 15 must be held in proper relation with the cutter 14 while being carried to the die 12 and my invention relates particularly to the type of mechanism for so holding the blank.
The numeral 17 designates a bar that is pivoted by the bolt 18 to the upper end of a bracket 19 secured to and movable with the cutter slide 13. Within the outer end of the bar 17 is a stud 20 having an opening in one end through which projects the finger 21 which is held in any of its radial positions in connection with the bar 17 by the flanged bushing 22 and nut 23. By manipulation of the nut 23 the stud 20 can, of course, be moved to any of its rotary positions carrying with it the finger 21, the inner face of which rests against the flanged bushing 22. Connected at one end with the stud 20 and the other end to a swivel block 24 is an arm 25. A nut 26 upon the swivel block 24 in sures the proper relation between said block and arm 25.
Projecting through the swivel block is a guide rod 27 having a head 30 thereon that is pivotally connected by a pintle or stud 28 to the bar 17. Nuts'29 upon the guide rod 27 determine the limit of movement of the swivel block 24 and the tension of the coil spring 31,
Lateral movement of the bar 17 is prevented by the brackets 32 and 33 which are secured to the body 10 and between which the bar 17 is slidably mounted.
Secured to the bracket is the cam 34 having thereon the cam faces 35 and 36, these being at an angle to each other.
Fixed in the bar 17 by any suitable means is a bushing 37 within which is movably mounted the plunger 38 having a conical outer end 39 and head 40 at the opposite end, which abuts against the bottom of the recess 41 in said bushing to limit the outward movement thereof.
Within the recess 41 is a spring 42 which lies between the head 40 of the bracket 38 and the plug 43 threaded into said bushing V and preferably held against accidental disengagement by a cotter pin 44 or similar means. A spring 45 connected at one end to the bar 17 and at the other end by a hook 46 or similar means to the cutter slide 13 exerts its tension so as to hold said bar 17 in its down position.
In Figure 1 the parts are shown in their relative position at the end of the'inner stroke of the cut off bar, the blank 16 being in register with the opening in'tlie die 12 and ready for the return stroke of said outter bar. During this return stroke the bar 17 moves upon its pivot mounting and thus lifts the finger 21 away from the cutter 14 and the blank 16 as that portion of the plunger 38 that projects over the cam 34 rides on the cam face 35. This action continues until the plunger 38 has passed over the top of the cam 34 and'dropped in the rear thereof, when the movement of the bar 17 is in a straight path, and the finger 21 is returned to its former position in relation to the cutter 14.
As the finger 21 should not press against the end of the cutter bar during the feed of the rod, adjustable means are provided to permit sufficient open space between said intense end of the finger 21 and cutter 14 may be determined, because the finger 21 is brought into contact therewith near the limit of the inward stroke of the cutter bar, during which time the spring 31 is compressed.
During the carrying movement of the cutter slide 13, the bar 17 moves in a straight path with the finger 21 in constant contact with the blank held in the cutter 14. This is permitted by the yielding of the plunger, 38 against the tension of the spring a2 and the inner end 39 contacts with the cam face 36 of the cam 34: until after the plunger has passed that portion of the cam in its path or until it is substantially opposite the lowest point of the cam face 35, at which time the spring 42 will move the plunger outwardly. During the next reciprocation of the cutter slide 13 and bar 17 the latter will move upon its pivot mounting as above described, the spring 15 tending to always hold the bar 17 in its down position. I
In order to make as many 01 the parts as possible upon the cutter and die mechanism accessible for adjustment and substitution, the bar 17 may be moved upon its pivot mounting 18 so as to occupy the broken line position shown in Figure 3, the spring 4L5 being released from the hook 46 to permit this movement, and the stop pin 49 limiting said movement.
Any other means than that above illustrated may be utilized to rock the bar 17 upon its pivot mounting and one of such modified or alternative forms of mechanism is shown in Figures 1 to 7 inclusive wherein a latch 50 is pivotally connected to the bracket 33 by the stud 51 and normally held in the position shown in Figure 4 by a spring 52 which encircles said stud and bears at one end against the bracket and at the other end against the stud 53 fixed in the latch 50. A slightly additional withdrawal movement of the bar 17 carries the stud 55 over the top of the cam 54; and the same drops by gravity, aided by the spring 4-5, toits down position, the stud dropping behind the cam.
Upon the return movement of the bar 17, the stud 55 by its engagement with the und side or" the cam 5% causes the latch 50 to rock upon its pivot mounting and the stud 55 passes thereunder. The up position of the latch 50 and the position of the bar 17 and stud 55 relative thereto is shown in Figures 6 and 7.
Minor changes and alterations may be made within my invention, aside from those herein suggested, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of the appended claims. a
What I claim as new and, desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A transfer mechanism of the character described having a pivotally mounted reciprocating bar that moves in a substantially straight path in one direction; means between the ends of said bar for rocking the same upon said pivot mounting while moving in the opposite direction, and a finger connected with said bar.
2. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, of a bar movably connected therewith that travels in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, and means between the ends of said bar, and in part connected with a non-movable part, for actuating said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar, to cause the same to travel out of said sub stantially straight path for a portion of its movement, and a. finger connected with said bar.
3. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, of a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means in part connected with a non-movable part whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar, will travel out of a substantially straight path for a portion of its movement and in a substantially straight path for the remainder of such movement, and a finger connected with said bar.
4c. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, of a bar connected therewith and movable in a. substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar, will travel out of a straight path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a fixed cam and a yielding member in the path thereof; and a finger connected with said bar.
5. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, of a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar, will travel out of a straigl t path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a fixed cam, a yielding member connected with said bar which is out of the path of said cam while said bar is moving in one direction and is i" the path thereof when moving in the opposite direction.
6. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting -machine or the like, of a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar, will travel. out of a straight path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a fixed cam, a yielding member connected with said bar and actuated by said cam while moving in one direction and moving said bar out of a straight path when the latter is moving in the opposite direction; and a finger connected with said'bar. 7. In combination with the cutter bar oi a header, upsetting machine or the like, of a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, and means between the ends of said bar actuating said bar so as to impartmovement thereto relatively to said cutter bar, while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar, and travel out of a straight path for aportion of its movement, said means also preventing the lateral movement of said bar, and a finger connected with said bar.
8. In combination with the cutter bar of ,a header, upsetting machine or the like, of
a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar, will. travel out of a straight path for a portion of its movement,
said means comprising a fixed cam having plural cam faces, and a yielding member connected with'said bar and actuated by one of said cam faces while said bar is moving in one direction, and engage another of said cam faces and thereby moves the bar out of its straight line pathwhen the latter is moving in the opposite direction.
9. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, of a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in-one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said barwhile moving inthe opposite direction with said cutter bar, will travel out ofa straight path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a fixed cam having plural cam faces, and a yielding member having an angular outer end which engages one of said camtaces and is moved in one direction thereby while said bar is movin in one direction, and engage another of sal cams and moves the bar out of its straight line path when the latter is moving in the a bar, means for pivotally connecting the same to the cutter bar near one end, and by a yielding connection near the opposite end, and means between said connections that will positively actuate said bar upon its pivot mounting during a limited portion'of its movement in one direct-ion and will permit a substantially straight line movement while traveling in the opposite direction.
12. Ii -combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, of a bar pivotally connected thereto at one end, means between the ends of said bar that will actuate said bar upon its pivot mounting during a limited portion of its movement in one direction and will permit a substantially straight line movement while traveling in the opposite direction, and yielding means for resisting the movement of said her out of a straight line path.
18. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, means for holding the blank upon the cutter connected with said bar while the same is transferring said blank from the cut off point to the workholder, said means comprising a finger held in engagement with said blank I during said transfer movement, and mounted in relation to said cutter so that during a portion of the return movement of said cutter bar, said finger and its supporting 1 means may move in a rotary path in relation to said cutter bar and means for moving 4 said bar relat1vely to said cutter bar during.

means for holding the blank upon the cutter connected with said bar while the same is transferring said blank from the'cut oft" point to the workholder, said means comprising a finger held in engagement with said blank during said transfer movement, and mounted in relation to said cutter so that during a portion 01"" the return movement of said cutter bar, said finger and its supporting means may move in an independent rotary path in relation to said cutter bar and means for moving said bar relatively to said cutter bar during said return movement,
15. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, means for holding the blank upon the cutter connected with said bar while the same is transferring said blank from the cut off point to the workholder, said means comprising a finger held in engagement with said blank during said transfer movement, and mounted in relation to said cutter so that during a portion of the return move ment of said cutter bar, said finger may move in a rotary path in relation to said cutter bar, and its supporting means which also may move in a rotary path in relation thereto, both of said rotary movements being spring resis ed and means for moving said bar relatively to said cutter bar during said return movement.
16. A transfer mechanism of the character described having a reciprocating bar that moves in a substantially straight path while traveling toward the die, a finger, means for connecting said tinge with said bar whereby it may have a rotary movement relative thereto, and means other than said finger for imparting movement to said bar upon its pivot mounting while moving in a direction away from said die.
17. A transfer mechanism of the character described having a reciprocating bar that moves in a straight path while traveling toward the die, a finger, means for connecting said finger with said bar whereby it may have a rotary movement relative thereto, yielding means for resisting said rotary movement, and means other than said finger for imparting movement to said bar upon its pivot mounting while moving in a direction away from said die.
18. In combination with the cutter bar ot a header, n1 setting machine or the like, a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar means whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar will travel out of a straight path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a cam and a member connected with said bar.
19. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar will travel out of a straight path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a member movable in relation to said bar and amember fixed in said bar.
20. In combination with the cutter of a header, upsetting machine or the like, a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means v reby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar will travel out of a straight path for a portion oi its move ment, said means comprising apivotally mounted cam, a member fixed in said bar which engages said cam and causes the san to move upon its pivot mounting while sa bar is moving in one direction, and by this engagement said bar while moving in t& opposite direction will move upon its pivoi mounting.
21. In combination with the cutter bar o a header, upsetting machine or the like, a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar will travel out of a 80 straight path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a latch having a cam connected therewith, yielding means for holding said latch in one of its positions and a member connected with said bar and engaging said cam whereby said bar is' moved upon its pivot mounting while traveling in one direction.
22. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said bar while movin in the opposite direction with said cutter bar will travel out of a straight path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a latch having a cam upon one side thereof, yielding means for holding said latch in one of its positions and a member connected with said bar and en gaging said cam whereby said her is moved upon its pivot mounting while traveling in one direction.
23. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, a bar connected therewith and movable in a Substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction with said cutter bar will travel out ofa U straight path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a latch pivotally connected with a fixed part and having a cam upon one side thereof, and a member fixed in said bar in the path of said cam, the relation of said member to said cam being such that it may have a limited movement upon each side of said cam without engaging the same.
24. In combination with the cutter bar of a header, upsetting machine or the like, a bar connected therewith and movable in a substantially straight path in one direction with said cutter bar, means whereby said bar while moving in the opposite direction lli) with said cutter bar Will travel out of a straight path for a portion of its movement, said means comprising a latch having a cam thereon, a stud connected with a fixed part upon which said latch is movably mounted, a spring engaging said stud to normally hold the latch in one of its positions, and a member connected with said bar and projecting therefrom so as to engage said cam during the movement of the bar.
25. In combination with the tools for upsetting a blank in a header or the like; of a cutter bar; means for holding the blank upon the cutter connected With said bar While the same is transferring said blank from the out 01f point to the said tools, said means comprising a finger held in engage ment with said blank during said transfer movement; and means connected with said header, other than said blank or tools, for actuating said vfinger, whereby the same during the first portion of the return m0ve-- merit of said cutter bar will be moved away from said blank.
