FOLDING BOX OR CARTON.
Application led August 15, 1922. Serial No. 582,082.
To all whom/.it may cof/wem.' .p An example of my invention is shown in Be it known that l, ROWLAND HUNT, a the accompanying drawings in which British subject, of 130 Shacklewell Lane, Fig. l shows the three blank-s in Hat form Hackney, London, E. 8, England, have inthese being the main blank a, and the side or vented certain new and useful Improveend blanks b and c, part only of blank c be- 60 ments in a Folding Box or Carton, of which inshown. f the following is a specification, such as will ig. 2 shows the box in half collapsed enable others skilled in the art to which it position.
appertains to make and use thesame. Fig. Blshows the box erected ready for This invention relates to folding boxes or nse. o5
cartons, hereinafter referred to as boxes. Fig. 4 shows a detail.
The invention is particularly applicable, Theblank a is adapted to be folded along but not limited, to boxes of the kind providthe dot-ted lines indicated at 1, 2, 3V and 4 ed with strin or like material which when and also to be bent alongl the line 5 when pulled will raw the box from its folded collapsed.l The blank b will befolded along 70 position to shape, that is to a position subthe dotted lines 6,7 vand the blank4 o along stantially ready for use, the said string or similar dotted lines 8 (Fig. 2) and-9. rlhe equivalent being used to carry the boxor to part b folds on the line 10 when the box is tie it up. v collapsed and the part c on line 11. Blank Boxes of this kind are usually made of b has projecting portions d, al which are 75 cardboard, rectangular in shape and stamped gummed on the shaded. parts e, e of the as blanks adapted to be bent along lines blank a and blank c has like projections f which may be creased to facilitate the bendadaptedl to be stuck on parts g, g; rlhe ing. Various methods of attaching the sides shape of the gummedportions may vary together and to the bottom have been adoptfrom that shown and any suitable fastening 80 ed whilst the top is,'as is usual with card# means may beused in place -of an adhesive. board and the like boxes, a part integrale These projections have dotted lines across with one of the sides. them which will `coincide with the lines 3 My invention is designed to provide a box and 4 respectively.v When the three blanks 90 of lthe type referred to which shall be inexare gummed together the string holes h will 85 pensive to makev and of strong and simple coincide with the holes'i and string holes j construction. with the holes k. The blanks b and c are l construct my box with three blanks, viz, provided with tongues l having tongues or a main or body blank and two side'blanks notch portions m adapted to fit into and enwhich latter have flange portions adapted to gage the slots n in the blank a. These 00 lie on and strengthen the bottom of the box tongues are bent alon the lines 12. rlhe but both the sides and flanges are of such portions o of the blan s b, c and in which construction that they can be bent inwardl the -holes h, Iz, and y', 7' are made, are not towards each other when the box is co stuck to the blank a but as will be clearly lapsed, the strings when employed being atseen in Fig. 2 are free therefrom except as 95 tached to the flange portions and inserted above stated at the projecting portions d, d through the body in such a manner that and f, s when pulled the sides will straighten, the It will be evident from lookin at Fig. 2 flange portions will bend at right angles to that when the part a of the blank a is l .45 the sides and the box be ready for use impressed down, the side members b, c will 100 mediately. This construction is free from collapse and lie fiat between a and a. the additional end pieces or strengthening parts flange portions of these sides of which (o is other than those which are parts of the main seen) will lie in the same plane as the body blank or end portions. part of their blanks but when the strings In addition I preferably connect the bep, p are` pulled. theian e parts. of b and c M5 fore mentioned collapsible-.sides to the main will be drawn' tightly own on to the bptblank by means of tongues adapted to pass tom portion of the box, the parts I), c will be through slots said tongues having notches stretched straight and the box will be ready which will engage the corners of theslotsto for use substantially as seen in Fig. 3. The

flange on the edge of the cover are-of usual type. l'
lin lFig.- 4 which shows a corner of the box section it will be seen that the string p has pulled the parts 'into a rigid constructhe tongue Z has a good engage- What l claim lis 1. A folding boxcomprising a central yportion bent to form two oppos1te sides, the
ottom and the cover of the box; two other opposite sides attached to the said bottom by flangesl and attached also to the first mentioned opposite being adapted to bend vertically' and fold inwardly towards each other and" said bot-v tom being adapted to bend horizontally and` to fold outwardly and strings passed through the said flanges and through the said bottom and operating to position said anges with relation to the bottom when the strings are drawn upon. 5;- i
2. A rectangular folding box having a bottom adapted to foldoutwardly and in doing so to bring two flat opposite sides towards each other, av cover attached to one of the said flat-.sides and two other sides attached at their ends to the flat sides and wards one another7 l line, ends foldable 4o attached also to the. said bottom, said other sides being adapted to-fold towards each other when the flat. sides are brought tolanges on the folding sides and adapted to fold therewith, an
Astrings connected tothe said-flanges and to the bottom ofthe box b which the box can be pulled out of its fo ded position.
3. A folding box having a bottom adapted to fold outwardly on a horizontal with relation to opposing edges of the bottom, sides connected tothe ends and with their marginal edges free of connection to the bottom, said sides being adapted to fold inwardly on vertical lines, the sides having flanges adapted Ito fold relativefto such sides and bear l-upon the bottom when the sides-are extended, and a string secured to said flanges and passing through the bottom','said string being operable to position the sides relative to the bottom and hold the flanges of the sides contact with the bottom.
4f. A foldin adapted to fo d outwardly on a horizontal line, ends foldably connected with opposing sides, said other sides box, comprising a I bottom edges ofthe bottom, a cover foldably connected to one of the ends, sides connected to the ends and with their marginal edges free .of connection with the bottom, said sides, being adapted to fold inwardly on vertical lines and having upper and lower .flange portions foldable relative to the sides to bear upon the bottom and also supp'ort the cover, and strings looped through the bottom flanges of the sides and through the bottom, said strings being operable to positionthe sides and bottom flanges thereof relative to the box. bottom in box forming relation.
5. A folding box, comprising a bottom adapted to fold outwardly on a horizontal line, ends foldably connected with opposing edges of the bottom, a cover foldably connectedto one of the ends, sides connected ,to the ends and with their marginal edges free of connection with the bottom, said sides being adapted to fold inwardly on vertical lines and having upper and lower flange ortions foldable relative to the sides to ear upon the bottom and also support the cover, and strings looped'through the bottom flanges of the sides and through the bottom, said strings being operable to position the sides and bottom flanges thereof relative to the box bottom in box forming relation and being of a length to permit their extended portions after operation to be `used as a tie for the box.
6. A folding box, comprising a rectangular blank scored to fold to present the ends, bottom, and top of the box, said bottom being scored transverse the blank to permit independent folding of the bottom, and duplicate blanks forming sides and each havlng an extension to form a bottom flap for -the sides, said bottom flaps having extensions to permit the sides to be secured to the rectangular blank, the sides proper having extensions to interlock with the box end forming. portions of the rectangular blank, said` sides being scored for folding transverse their lengths. l
