Description
W. G. BLACKLIDGE.
Saw-Gummers.
Patented Feb. 24. 1874.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM G. BLAOKLIDGE,
PATENT Darren.
or METAMORA, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT m SAW-GUMMERS.
Bpecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,8 14, dated February 24, 1874; application filed February 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. BLACK LIDGE, of Metamora, Franklin county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Gumming, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to an improved form of those instruments for gumming or chambering saw-teeth, such as forms the subject of patent granted to me July 8, 1873, and in which a reaming-cylinder operates with a combined rotary sidewise and endwise movement; and my present improvement comprises a provision for varying at will the sidewise feed of the reamer. My improvement further comprises a provision whereby the fast screw may be temporarily released from its nut, so as to enable the operator to shift the wedge-slide to or fro in the frame without the delay of screwing.
1n the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is perspective view of a machine embodying my terminating below in two pairs of jaws, 0, de-
signed to straddle the saw-blade, and to be affixed in the desired position thereto by setscrewD and clamp-screws E E. An L-formed groove, F, in said frame, receives my wedgeslide G, in which a straight-fluted reamer, Afii is journaled obliquely to the said L-groove. The shaft I of reamer H has at each end a crank, J, and has near that end, most remote from the L-groove, a pinion, K, which gears in a spur=wheel, L, upon a screw, M, which is jonrnaled with the frame parallel to the L= groove. N is a half=nut, which, being depressed by screw 0, engages with the feed-screw M, or may, by retraction of screw 0, be disengaged from said screw M. When the half nut N and feed-screw M are engaged, any rotation of the reamer is accompanied by an advance of the wedge-slide G within the frame A, and said reamer having thereby imparted to it an endwise and a sidewise motion, which, notwithstanding its straight flutings, gives it a shear like and incisive action on the saw-blade. Setscrews P P, acting on bearing, enable the operator, by increasing or decreasing the relative obliquity of the L-groove and the reamer, to increase or diminish the feed.
I do not propose to restrict myself to the precise form here selected for illustration, but may vary some details thereof in non-essential particulars. For example, nut Q,whose rotation may be temporarily suspended by a pin, R, which, being inserted in a hole, a, in frame .A, also occupies a notch, q, in said nut-may take the place of the releasable half-nut N.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. In combinationwith the frame AF, wedgeslide G, reamer H, and gearing K L, the releasable half-nut N or its equivalent, as and for the purpose stated.
2. In combination with the elements A, F, G, H, K, L, and N, the adjustable outer hearing T to the reamer, as and for the purpose designated.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
WM. G. BLAOKLIDGE.
