UXLJLARY .AIR SUPPLY FOR FUI-EL VAPORIZERS.
. Application filed may 13, 1922. Serial No. 560,@57.
Beit known that l, JOSEPH A. AMORI, a. sub'ect of the King of lltaly, and resident of an Idose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Auxiliary Air Supplies for Fuel Vaporizers, ot
)Figure 2 is a cross-section ot the auxiliary` air port showing the same in the open position2 parts being broken away.
F1 re 3 is a cross-Section of the same showing the auxiliaryair port closed, par@ being broken away. w i
Figure 4l is a section on line /1--l ot' Figure 2, parts being broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates a portion of an internal combustion engine, and 2 acarbureter connected thereto by means of manifold 3 and intairey pipe l.
ln the embodiment of my invention herein disclosed, the manifold intake pipe d is provided with two ports 5 and 6. To port 6 is connected a pipe 7 communicating with a chamber 8 provided with a recess arranged at right an les to'pipe 7.
Connecte to port 5 is a pipe T 1l) the opposite openings of which are indicated at 11 and 12 respectively. Chamber 8 and open- 12 of T 10 are connected by a ipe 13, and openin 11 o T 10 is tted with a pipe section let tted with a stop 15. rllhe two pipe sections 13 and 14 tit into T 10 to term an annular chamber 16' therein between the ends of said pipe sections and communicating with port 5 through T 10 at all times. Slidably mounted in pipe sections 13 andll is a tube 17 closed at the end 18 directed toward chamber 8 but open at its opposite end as at 19 and provided with a port at 20. At
inserted in recess 9 ot chamber 21 is a spring the closed end 18 ot tube 17.
8 and engaging When; the vdevice is assembled 'as above described spring 21 normally holds tube 17 against stop 15 so that port 20 is c`osed oil1 by pipe se'ctlon 14e. 'llhe engine being put into operation the suction through pipe t, tends to produce a vacuum yin chamber 8 thereby moving-tube 17 lengthwise in pipe 13, in the direction of chamber 8 and bringingport 20 more or less into communication with chamber 16 and port 5, the degree ot suctionin chamberI 8 automatically positioning port 20 and regulating the amount ot auxiliary air admitted through the open end ot tube 17 and pipe 1dl llt the engine-is running at rather high speed but a somewhat light load then the full amount ol' auxiliary air is admitted. lli, however, the load should Jere-greatly increased as b richer fuel mixture is desired. This richer mixture is instantly and automatically supplied because the increased suction' due to the increased load moves tube 17 still further along in pipes l-ld until port 20 is closed oftJ by pipe 13 and the How of auxiliary air is cut od as shown in Figure 3. A. decrease in engine load automatically moves port 20 baclr into communication with chamber 16 andl port 5, and a proportionately leaner mixture is provided.,
llt may now be seen trom the foregoing disclosure that ll have provided a device whereby the vaporized fuel passing through the engine 'manifold may be reduced or increased in richness as the work performed by the engine demands, and vthis result is obtained automatically. A much finer adjustment et air to fuel is obtained in an automatic adjustment et this nature than can be obtained through manual adjustments as the movement et tube 17 is instantaneous with any variation in engine stmtionh llt is to be understood, of' course, that while l have herein shown and described one vparticular embodiment of my invention that changes in torm, proportion construction and method of operation may e made within the scope ot the appended claim.
ln combination with the suction tube et ythe manifold ot an internal combustion engine, having spaced ports formed therein, n
pipe section connected to one port having a chamber termed therein and a recess entendat right angles thereto and communicating with said chamber, pipe section connected ascending a hill, a much lltlfl lll@ to the other poriJ and provided with a, chamber in axial alignment with said rstmentioned chamber, a pipe' section connecting saiol chambers, a, pipe section communicating with said second chamber in axial alignment therewith and having a, stop in its outer end, a, tube closed at its inner end slidaibly mounted; in said last named pipe sections and passing through seid Alust;
Mmeee 4 named chamber, a spring inserted in a relo -in engagement with said stop, sind a port formed in said tube and movable into and out' of communication with said second l5 chamber.
