CONTROLLER FOR DRIVEN MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nmrs L. MoR'rENsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Controllers for Driven Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in controllers for motor driven machines and is particularly applicable to motor driven rubber mills.
Owing to the many instances where rubber mill operators have been injured by having their hands drawn between the mill rolls it has become quite customary to provide safety controllers whereby in emergencies the mill may be quickly stopped. However, in order to extricate the operators hands it has heretofore been necessary to efi'ect manual separation of the mill rolls and owing to the high temperature of such rolls and the time required to effect separation thereof the injuries received are usually augmented by severe burns. It has also been proposed to provide controllers which are adapted in emer encies to. both stop and reverse the mill r0 5 but in practice it has been found that reversal of the rolls is likely to produce additional injuries.
The present invention has amon its objects to provide 'a controller for rubber mills and other driven machines which is adapted upon emergency operation to effect quick stopping of the driven machine and automatic separation of the rolls thereof.
Another object is to provide a controller of the aforesaid character having power 011)- erated means for adjusting the mill rol said means being normally adapted to operate the rolls at a speed suitable for adjustment purposes and bein adapted in emergencies to effect separation of the rolls at an increased speed.
Various other objects andadvant'ages will hereinafter appear.
The accompanying drawing illustrates schematically an embodiment of the invention which will now be described it bein understood that the embodiment illustrated is susceptible of modification without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing the driven machine is represented schematically by a air of rolls 1 and 2 the former to be driven y a motor 3 and the latter being adjustable with respect to the former by suitable screw down means represented by a screw 4.
Screw 4 is adapted to be driven through the medium of mechanism of the character disclosed in the atent to Clark T. Henderson, No. 1,157,307 of October 19, 1915, such mechanism comprisin in general a power operated driving mem er 5, a hand operated driving member 6, a common driven member 7 and interposed gearing whereby braking of either driving member provides a drive through a medium of the other.
Member 5 is driven by a motor 8 having an armature A and a field F said armature being fixed to driving member 5 and being normally restrained by a brake 9 having an electromagnetic operating windin 9". Driving member 6 is aligned with an preferably journaled within the driven member 7 and has keyed thereto a pinion 10 in constant mesh with a pair of epicyclic gears 11 loosely journaled on lugs 12 projecting from' driven member 7. A loose casin 13 encloses gears 10 and 11 and is provide with bearings 14 and 15 on the driving and driven .shafts'respectively. Casing 13 is provided with internal gear teeth adapted to mesh with gears 11 and external gear teeth adapted to mesh with a pinion 16 fixed to shaft 5. Driving member 6 is provided with a hand wheel 17 for operating the same and driven member 7 has a bevel pinion 18 adapted to mesh with a bevel gear 19 fixed to screw shaft 1.
As set forth in the aforementioned patent, with motor 8 stationary, adjustment of roll 2 can be eifected by rotatin drive shaft 6 through the medium of hand wheel 17 and upon restraint of shaft 6 motor 8 is adapted to effect such adjustment. However, as hereinafter set forth motor 8 is adapted in emergencies to operate at a relatively high speed to effect separation of the rolls 1 and 2 and during such 0 eration shaft 6 is adapted to be automatica ly restrained.

Emergency control element Q9 includes normally open contacts 29 and 29*, the former contacts heing adapted to control the energluing circuit of relay 28 through th medium oi" switch so and the latter the tripping circuit of circuit breaker 2%. Limit switch 30 is normally closed and is adapted to open upon upward movement of roll 2 to a given position.

Upon depression of switch 2S) switch 23 opens to stop motor 3, the tripping coil 23 heing then connected across line-s L and L by contact 29 through circuit connections which are apparent from the drawins". Contact 29 simultaneously energizes relay 2-8 through a circuit extending f om line L through contact 29/ hy conductor 38 through limit switch 29 by conductor 39 through the winding of relay 28 and by conductor 40 to line L". in responding relay 28 insures interruption of the energizing circuit of reversing switch 25 by opening of its contact 28 and the contact 28* thereof establishes an energizing circuit for reversing switch 26 extending from line L by conductors ti and 42 through Contact 28" by conductors 4:3 and 36 through the operating winding of reversing switch 28 and by conductor 33 to line l As before stated, closure of reversing switch 2'5 establishes power consections for effecting operation of motor 8 in a direction to move roll 2 upwardly and immediately upon establishment of such power connections hralre 9 is energized by a circuit extending from line L hy conductors ll 422 through contact 8 by conductors and through winding 9 and toy conductors 35 and 33 to line ll while hralre Q-tl is energized by a circuit extending from line L by conductor 41 through contact iltl hy conductor 4:5 through solenoid winding @l and by conductor 46 to line lit. Thus it is apparent that in emergencies motor 8 will operate at an increased speed to effect upward movement of roll 2, the driving connection therefor being maintained by restraint of driving member 6 through the medium of brake 20. When. roll 2 is moved into a given upper limit the same effects opening of limit switch 29' and the aforedescribed energizing circuit of relay 28 is interrupted and upon opening of said relay switches 26 and 27 return to normal position and brake is released while brake 9 is reset.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a controller for driven machines having relatively adjustable work-performing parts adapted to act upon material fed therebetween in combination means for effecting relative adjustment of said parts and control means associated with said former means and operable in emergencies to effect a given relative adjustment of said parts.
2. In a controller for driven machines having relatively adjustable work-performing parts adapted to act upon material fed therebetween in combnation means for starting and stopping said machine and for effecting relative adjustment of said parts and control means operable in emergencies to stop said machine and to simultaneously effect separation of said work-performing parts. a
3. In a controller for driven machines having relatively adjustable work-performing parts adapted to act upon material fed therebetween in combination driving means for said machine, means for effecting relative adjustment of said parts and control means including an emergency control element operable to stop said machine and to simultaneously effect quick separation of said work-performing parts.
4. In a controller for driven machines having relatively adjustable work-performing parts adapted to act upon material fed therebetween in combination means 0 rable in emergencies to eifec't a given relative adjustment of said work-performing parts, said means includng means whereby said wolrlk-performing parts may be adjusted at w1 5. In a controller for driven machines having relatively adjustable work performin parts adapted to act upon the material fe therebetween in combination power operated means normally adapted to effect relative adjustment of said work-performing arts at a given speed and means operable 1n emergencies to efiect a given relative adjustment of said parts at an increase speed.
6. In a controller for driven machines having relatively adjustable work-performing parts adapted to act upon material fed therebetween in combination drivin means for said machine, power operate means controllable at will to effect relative adjustment of said parts and emergency control means operable to stop said machine and to eifect a given operation of said power operated means.
7. In a controller for driven machines having relatively adjustable work-performing parts adapted to act upon material fed therebetween in combination a driving motor for said machine power operated means for effecting relative adjustment of said work-performing parts and control means for said driving motor and said power operated adjusting means operable to effect quick stopping of said machine and to simultaneously eifect quick separation of said work-performing arts.
8. In a contro er for driven machines having relatively adjustable work-performing parts adapted to act upon material fed therebetween in combination a driving motor for said machine a reversible motor for varying the spacing of said work-performing parts and control means for said motors operable in emergencies to stop said former motor and to insure operation of the latter in a direction to effect separation of said workiperforming 1parts. v
9. n a contro ler for driven machines having relatively ad'ustable rolls adapted to act vu n material fed therebetween in combination a driving motor for said rolls, a reversible motor for varying the relative spacing of said rolls and control means for said motors including an emergency control element operable to elfect stopping of said former motor and simultaneous operation of the latter motor in a direction to effect separation of said rolls.
10. In a controller for driven machines havingrolls adapted to act upon the mate rial fed therebetween and screw down means for varying the relative s acing of said rolls, in combination means or starting and stopping said driven machine, a reversible motor for varying the spacing between said rolls, power transmitting mechanism between said motor and said screw down means including a part requiring restraint to render saidmotor effective, and to be released to render the same ineffective and emer ncy control means for said machine inclu ing means for stopping said machine and for simultaneously braking said art and effecting o ration of said motor in a direction to e ect se aration of said rolls.
