SPEED REGULATOR FOR PHONOGRAPHS.
Application filed September 19, 1922. Serial No. 589,046.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', lilonnrs Vroronsorm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Speed Regulators for Phonographs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to phonographs, and particularly to governors for regulating the speed of rotation of the turntables on which the phonograph records are mounted.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved and simplified form of governor regulator which is inexpensive to manufacture, may be readily attached to the phonograph casing, and can easily set to prevent the turntable from rotating beyond a predetermined speed. A special object is to provide means for retaining the regulator in any set position without danger of accidental displacement. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a phonograph casing, showing the turn table, governor and regulator arranged substantially in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a detailed view of the regulator drawn to a larger scale than in Figure 1 and shown in plan, and
Figure 3 is an end view of the regulator shaft and dial plate.
In the casing 1 of a phonograph there is suitably journaled the turntable spindle 3 carrying the turntable 2 at its upper end and a gear 4 at its lower end. adapted to be driven by gearing of a suitable motor (not shown). The gear 4 also meshes with a pin ion 5 on the governor shaft 7. The gover nor 6 may be of a known type, as shown, and has a disk 8 rotatable therewith.
The regulator for said governor comprises a bell-crank arm 10 pivoted at 11 on a bracket 12 and having a braking pad 9 on one end to engage with the disk 8, while its .other end extends into the path of a vane 15 on a shaft 16 journaled in the casing 1. Said vane 15 preferably has its free edge tapered, as at 14, and it is adjustably mounted and held on the shaft 16 by a set screw 18 and nuts 1.7 and 22, see Figure 2. The journal for the shaft 16 preferably comprises a sleeve 19 extending through the easing wall. 1 and having flanges 20 and 23 on its opposite ends, said sleeve and flanges being fixed to said casing wall in any suitable manner, as by a screw 32.
The inner end of the shaft 16 extends be: yond the inner end of the sleeve 19 for some distance, and a coiled spring is mounted around said inwardly extending portion of the sleeve between the nut 22 and the flange 20, said spring acting to yieldingly hold the shaft at its innermost position. The outer end of said shaft 16 is fitted with a handle or knob 30, a disk 26 and a pointer 27 all mounted to rotate with said shaft. As shown in Figure 2, the pointer and disk may be made integral and secured to the shaft by a set screw 31. The disk 26 has a series of spaced holes 25 therein adapted to be engaged with a pin 24 projecting from the ounter face of the flange 23 of the sleeve 19. Said flange may also bear indicia 28 and 29 indicating the directions in which the pointer 27 should be turned to increase and decrease the speed of the turnable, re spectively.
To set the regulator, the lmob 30 is grasped and the shaft 16 pulled outward against the tension of the spring 21 until the disk 25 may be rotated free of the pin 24, whereupon said shaft, disk and pointer are turned in the proper direction and the pin engaged with the proper one of the holes 25 in the disk, whereby upon release of the knob the shaft will be locked in adjusted position with the vane 15 holding the braking pad 9 on the lever 10 in position to retard the movement of the governor by engaging the disk 8 when the desired speed of the turntable is reached. It will be noted that the vane 15 is made wide enough to always engage the lever arm 13 even during adjustment of said vane with the shaft as just explained.
I claim 1. The combination with a governor of the character described, of a member rotatable therewith, a brake pad, a rotary shaft for moving said pad, said shaft also having a perforateddisk secured to its outer end portion, a pin to engage any one of said perforations in the disk for retainin said shaft in adjusted position, and means or rotating the shaft to adjust the pad to be engaged by said rotatable member at different speeds of the governor.
2.'The combination with a governor of the character described, of a member rotatable with said governor, a brake pad, and means for adjusting said pad to be engaged by said rotatable member at different speeds of the governor, said means comprising a rotatable and axially movable shaft having a projection to actuate the pad, a perforated disk fixed to tur'i'i with the shaft, a pin to engage any one of said perforations in the disk for retaining the shaft in adjusted position, and resilient means for yieldingly holding the shaft in position for engagement of the pin bye erforation in the disk.
